  1. Do you have access to books where you are? Can you order from the internet or have a friend buy one and mail it to you? The book "Living Gluten Free for Dummies" is a primer on how to eat gluten free. It could help you a lot. In the meantime....some corn flakes are gluten-free - usually the healthfood store brands - most major brands are not. It's...
  2. The ELISA test (food panel) looks for IgG reactions....celiac disease is an IgA reaction. You can be allergic (IgG) to wheat but not have celiac disease....and you can have celiac disease, but not be allergic to wheat. Allergy and intolerance are different things....apples and oranges. I'd think that the dairy or the sugar could make you feel badly. Are...

    ARCHIVED Good News

Ali, that is FANTASTIC! I can't imagine a more proactive way to deal with all the stuff you've been going through! Also, you'll be fulfilling a BIG need. Selfishly, I hope you set up practice in the NY area, lol! Best of luck in your new course of studies!!! Rho

    ARCHIVED Excema

Kassandra - Did the doc tell you what kind of excema? I've had keratosis pilaris (acne-like bumps on the backs of my upper arms) since I was a teen. It's decreased a lot as I've grown older (44 now.) I never knew what it was called until recently. It's a harmless condition, though it can be bothersome. It sounds like what you described. There was a...
  5. OMG, thanks for posting this! My ds just told me recently that the one thing he really misses from the "gluten days" is Boston Cream donuts. I could make Boston Cream Munchkins!!!! This will be fun....I'm going to Linens'n'Things tomorrow! Rho
  6. You know, even a week ago, I wouldn't have responded to this post. I've been so intent on keeping a positive spin on the gluten-free (and cf/sf for my dd) diet that I didn't let the anger surface at all. A friend of mine gave me some advice (very good, I think.) She told me that I would be the model for how to handle the dietary restrictions....that if...
  7. You need a new doc! The "flu" for months? That's crazy. With your family history and her symptoms, I'd actually be surprised to hear that your dd doesn't have celiac disease. If you have access to such, I'd look for a good pediatric GI that has knowledge of celiac disease. If the blood test is positive, the next step would be an endoscopy with intestinal...
  8. It's a GREAT resource, 'specially in the beginning. It's the first book I read after going gluten-free and I often pull it back out to look things up (and to use the gluten-free "Chex Mix" recipe!) It's the first book that I recommend others to buy when they go gluten-free or are considering going gluten-free. I also bought a copy for my mom, to help her...
  9. This is SO true! I just made a similar comment to my brother this morning. The longer I'm gluten-free/cf/sf, the less I feel "attached" to food in an emotional way. I'm also much more aware of the extent of emotional, sentimental and cultural attachment everyone around me seems to attach to food. It's kind of like being sober in a room full of drunk people...
  10. I think that's the key right there - "if they were *forced* to." If you have a choice between being really sick or abstaining from a food, it's not a difficult choice to make. If it's a choice with no immediate negative consequences - i.e., eat the burrito or save a few calories - AND it's a choice that carries some immediate gratification as well - most...
  11. I've been gluten-free for about 3 months and I've been reading and trying to learn as much as I can about celiac disease, GS, the gluten-free diet, etc. Never, in all that time, have I seen anything approaching guidelines. Recovery is just too individualized. What popped into my head was that maybe you're experiencing a secondary food intolerance - dairy...
  12. If you have an active DH eruption, why not get a skin biopsy rather than a gut biopsy? I read Dr. Peter Green's book "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic" a couple of months ago. Dr. Green is recognized as being one of the leaders in the field and he said, right there in black and white, that if you have DH you have celiac disease. Personally, if I felt...
  13. Wow, that's fantastic news! I'd be crying too! Keep up the good work! Rho
  14. I hope they stop. I've been gluten-free for around 3 months. I've had a couple of these dreams and yes, they are nightmares. No advice....just wanted to say you're not alone! Rho
  15. It sounds like a good plan! BTW, my dh had a very hard time accepting that my dd was sick. He accepted that she had an "intolerance" (he's intolerant and had self-selected most of the wheat out of his diet over the years because he realized that it made him feel bad when he ate it) but if I used the word "disease" he freaked out! We had a whopper of an...
  16. It's my understanding that antibodies show up in your stool before they show up in your blood. It makes sense, if you think about it. The antibodies originate in your intestine and only spill into your bloodstream when your intestinal wall is damaged and leaky enough to allow stuff through. You can't know from the fecal test if she has celiac disease....
  17. I was going to say you *couldn't* be in the Berkshires (I live in NY, just over the border.) I've found very little knowledge of celiac disease or gluten-free food there (except for one great natural/health food store, where I buy most of my gluten-free stuff.) My dd looked at this thread and liked "Silly Yak Sweets." You could also name it after your...
  18. You don't need a doctor to tell you that you're better without gluten in your diet - you already know that. I'm self-diagnosed, based on my reaction to eating gluten-free for a month, then heavily glutening myself and getting really sick. I did the Enterolab fecal test for confirmation, just because I wanted a bit more info. Even the Enterolab test wasn...
  19. I think you have to kick yourself a couple of times and then let it go. A friend of mine, who'd been dealing with celiac disease and the gluten-free diet for years (her twins have celiac disease), told me right at the beginning "You'll make mistakes. It happens to everyone." When I screwed up, I tried hard to remember what she'd said. I was a bit of a...
  20. It *is* a scary undertaking at first, but it gets easier and easier. I pulled my two out of school 4 years ago and have been homeschooling ever since. (They attended a small private school. It was NOT a great experience. Private schools have different problems than public schools, but they have problems just the same.) I never planned to keep them home...
  21. We use Ricera to make smoothies....dd won't eat them plain. I was bummed. She loved yogurt before she had to give up dairy, and then liked soy yogurt before she had to give up soy. I was hoping this was the ticket, but as you guys said - weird consistency, way too sweet, and also a strange aftertaste. Oh, well....luckily, anything tastes good whirled...
  22. I've had mixed luck with this. My in-laws are walking laundry lists of celiac symptoms, but they were HIGHLY defensive when I pointed that out and offered all manner of ridiculous excuses to explain why it couldn't possibly be true. Sigh. They even doubt that gluten intolerance is real....they keep saying "A little won't hurt." So I've given up with them...
  23. I'm 44 and I just had one done. I requested the scan myself, along with lots of bloodwork. I never had big symptoms with my gluten consumption, so I really wanted to try and gauge how "sick" I really am. I told my Dr. (my primary) what I was thinking and he agreed that it was a good idea to get a baseline. So.... we did. The scan is a piece of cake,...
  24. He was tested through Enterolab. He had a positive antigliadin, tTg and a borderline casein....no malabsorption. He'd also been gluten light for a while, by choice. I think on some level he must've realized that certain foods made him feel bad, even though he never said so. He rarely ate bread, wasn't a huge pasta fan, etc. He's always been dairy light...
  25. NO WAY!!!! My ds has all that stuff, including a funny eye rolling (well, more twitching) thing. He has been so much clearer off of gluten that I can't believe it. He had some educational testing done a few years ago and the tester wrote that he had a very slow processing speed, so slow (compared to his very high scores in other areas) that she couldn...
