  1. The issue is obviously not yours, congratulations. For those of us, and there are quite a few here, with multiple allergies and intolerances it is a problem. Soy is one of the seven top allergens and many people, not just Celiacs are allergic to it. It is unfortunate that a company like Betty Crocker, in trying to service the Gluten Free community has gone about it with about the same level of sensitivity as you seem to posses. I had hoped for more from Betty Crocker.

and p.s....this is a pretty solid example of ripping someone apart. Whether that was your intention or not.

  2. I don't know VioletBlue, maybe you're still really angry about Betty Crocker that you're not seeing how some of your posts are coming across. Everyone is allowed and welcomed to have their own opinions for sure, but some of your comments on this thread having come across as very accepting of other opinions. Maybe once the dust settles and you re-read it you'll see what I'm picking up on. No one is telling you that you don't have a "right" to voice your opinion but when you say things like "so you don't have a soy allergy, congrats"...it's not coming across very nicely.

That being said, its easy to read tones that maybe aren't there in a thread for sure.

However unfortunate it may be that Betty Crocker has now added soy to their product. As Peter said, they promised a gluten free product and that is what they're delivering. I'm not a chef so I can't really comment on why they're changing the ingredients now but while I appreciate your information us of the change...I appreciate Betty Crocker more for offering the celiac community a quality product.

  3. My goodness. The tone in some of the responses on this thread are unpleasant. There's no need for rudeness or snide comments here! Everyone is trying to help everyone else out, so to assume people are purposely trying to offend you is silly. This is unfortunate for those celiacs who also can't have soy without a doubt but sadly there are a lot of things that are considered gluten free that many people cannot have. I for one, cannot tolerate Udi's and still have no idea why but I'm not ripping apart others who can eat that product or bashing their opinions about the product.

    Ease up people....it's the holidays!

  4. Modified cornstarch is NOT gluten free!

This just isn't true. It's just corn starch chemically modified to improve properties for commercial uses. If it was modified food starch that had wheat or something in it, the company would have to put that on their label.

I use the mild old el paso taco seasoning (that's the yellow one, right?) without issues but never tried the low sodium one. I do know that some other brands have wheat listed on the packet but its easy to overlook.

  5. I was waiting for you to chime in Skylark! I emailed the company yesterday, so I'll report back to everyone about how they make their tortillas. I also didn't bring them to eat today but am going to eat everything else the same just for the process of elimination, maybe something else is sneaking in there thats getting me. It probably doesn't help that the last few days I've had yogurt, these tortillas, salad with flaxseed and then celery sticks....hellooooo fiber

  6. I can have corn but typically haven't liked them. I don't have access to anything to heat them up during the day and think they're kinda gross non-heated. Maybe Teff just bothers my stomach because its more fiber than I'm used to? I was using a lot of flaxseed for awhile and it used to do the same thing to me. Could just be that my body isn't used to the fiber, ?

  7. THANK YOU! For posting this!!! It's such a pain when threads come up and the date is 2006 or 2008 and people are still commenting. Things change so quickly and I'd hate for anyone to get wrong information because the assumption is made that its up to date information. I don't know that I'd want anything to be deleted because its nice to search back and see what was discussed but I'm sure something old from 2006 doesn't apply to anything in todays' celiac standards!

  8. Hello my fellow celiacs. I wanted to see if anyone had any experiences with Teff Flour. Recently at my local food store I found La Tortilla Factory gluten free wraps and I was pumped, they have good flexibility and while don't taste particularly awesome, they're still pretty darn OK. However, the last two days I've been in the bathroom WAY more than I'd like. Now, its not an emergency reaction per my usual "gluten or oat" incidents but it is A LOT and its not the most comfortable situation. (sorry for the TMI). So my question is, has anyone had experience with this brand or this flour and know anything about it. I don't know much about Teff flour aside from whats written on the back of the bag but if they are the cause of this nonsense, I don't want to keep "testing it" if that makes sense.

I'm not going to have them tomorrow but just figured I'd reach out to the experts on here!

  9. PILLSBURY CONFETTI FUNFETTI IS NOT GLUTEN FREE!

My daughter and I both have celiac. I made a gluten free cake and used Pillsbury's Vanilla Confetti Funfetti frosting. She was asleep when it was ready so my husband and I each had a piece before her- luckily! It made me VERY sick.

I figured that it must have been the sprinkles since we have eaten Pillsbury frosting before with no problem. So when my daughter was disappointed that we couldn't eat the cake, we had some of the PLAIN frosting that hadn't been used. It made us BOTH sick! Usually my daughter is VERY insensitive to gluten whereas I can tell very quickly if I have eaten some.

    Do not use this frosting!

Please be careful when you post things like this on here. Just because you reacted from it, doesn't mean that it was because of gluten. I'm not saying that this particular frosting is or isn't gluten free, because while nothing in the ingrediants screams gluten, I haven't checked with the company but I don't know for a fact the status. Just be careful that you're not spreading false information just because you had a negative experience, I love to hear about everyone's experiences but this disease is too difficult to not have all the facts!

  10. Congrats!

There is a bakery in PA called Gluuteny Bakery, and I believe I saw wedding cakes on their site. You could check them out. I am in NC and have a friend who told me about them a couple of years ago. She tried them on a visit in the area and said they were fantastic. Worth checking into anyway.

Thank you!! I just e-mailed them. Pittsburgh is a bit far away, I'm closer to Philadelphia...so I don't know if they'll deliver and I'm not sure I trust myself with picking up a cake and driving with it!! But I'll definitely check. :)

  11. I just got engaged last week and am starting to plan for my October 2011 wedding...however, I'm having a wedding cake dilemma. I'll be getting married in PA and haven't found many bakeries that make gluten free wedding cakes. The ones who claim that they do, have responded to my e-mails mentioning that they haven't made one yet and don't understand my question about cross-contamination ( ....not going to use them...).

I guess my question is more of a "help me figure this out". Do I have a normal wedding cake and a gluten free groom cake (so I can have some), so I have cupcakes and then just a small 8" round wedding cake for me? What did some of you do and do any of you know of any bakeries in the MD, DC, PA, NJ area that deliver and can be trusted?

I know Sweet Sin in Baltimore works with Charm City Cakes but CCC has a $1,000 minimum limit on a cake and I mean...that seems pricey.

  12. A lot of things can make you sick that don't necessarily have anything to do with your being gluten free. Sometimes the types of foods you eat give you a  face reaction...hell, I can't eat Udi's brand at all because I have one of these...:huh::o:ph34r: types of days (please tell me y'all got that..hahah) but that has to do with how the product is processed, my gluten eating boyfriend also reacted to their product in a similar way.

Sometimes...your body just doesn't like stuff!

  13. I don't really like being a celiac but I do like educating people about it! Most people I talk to are quite interested in learning more about it and I think the more educated people are on the disease, maybe the more I'll end up liking it in the future when more places offer items for us to enjoy! (that may have been the longest sentence ever...I had to breath even after typing it :P )

  14. Starbucks actually has several options they consider gluten free and they sell items in their store that are gluten free, a brand of cookies (but have Oats so I can't have them) and some other options. Certain lattes and other drinks are not safe for celiacs but straight up coffee is fine. I am a pesonal fan of the peppermint hot chocolate and the green tea lemonade!
