  1. Weird - bummer about the PB cookies! I've made two different PB cookie recipes using natural pb and had no problems. So, sorry, I don't have any suggestions there. As far as sugar cookies go (or any others) the only thing I've found that's gfcfsf is either coconut oil or Spectrum shortening. I tried the coconut oil as a sub in one recipe, though, and...
  2. I'm interested in this one, too. I think the fish food is the only gluten item left in the house & my dh is pretty messy with it, so I would LOVE to be done with it. I have seen that the vacation food doesn't have gluten (the blocks). I wonder if it's healthy for the fish on a long-term basis? (Or if it's financially ridiculous to consider?)
  3. Weird - my left rib sticks out too. So far as I can remember, it always has, although it was not as noticeable 40lbs ago. I went to a chiropractor last year who said I had some scoliosis; and a bone density scan a few months ago showed borderline osteopena (sp?) I never figured either could have anything to do with the rib, though. Interesting...
  4. Totally understandable! My solution (and believe me, I've had a number of these instances!) has been to make it a challenge to myself to find a decent substitute. I find that if I pull myself up and try to keep positive & do something about it, it helps far more that being depressed about what life has handed me. (Often easier said than done!) ...
  5. I had one of these knives prior to going gluten-free (sadly, I gave it away, since I couldn't be sure crumbs weren't hiding in it), and really liked it. I may have to get another cuz I have the worst time cutting a straight slice. Open Original Shared Link
  6. The beef & rice recipe sounds good. And, I'm pretty sure there are gluten-free Worcestershire sauces (I'm thinking Lee & Perrins?, but I'm not sure since I don't use it - must have other ingredients I can't have). Here's the mushroom soup recipe I've been using (can't remember where I got it, though, sorry) - Cream of Mushroom Soup 8 oz mushroom...
  7. Not really a Cream of Wheat texture, but I've come to really like (more than I'd liked oatmeal) millet cooked up (a bit overcooked makes it creamier), with some maple syrup, raisins, cinnamon, pecans and some coconut milk.
  8. For Salsbury steaks, I just make hamburger patties (burger, salt & pepper, onion & garlic powder, maybe a dash of red wine), place them in a baking dish & cook till almost done, then smother in mushroom soup and bake long enough to finish burgers & warm the soup. I have a from-scratch mushroom soup recipe that has proven quite good, if you...
  9. Hmm. How about a shepherd's pie (ground beef w/ gravy, mixed veggies...normally topped with mashed potatoes, but I wonder if you could sub mashed parsnips?) Or a different recipe for meatloaf (I just made one w/ beef, dry onions/onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, egg (could you sub flax?), and bread crumbs). I have a recipe for a plum ketchup...
  10. I just came across this one on GFCFrecipes (I think). Is it what you're looking for? I haven't tried it, though, so no help there. Nut Crust origin unknown 1 - 1/2 cups finely chopped nut meal 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 tablespoons butter or margerine, at room temperature Preheat the over to 400 (F). Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl...
  11. I believe the cheese brand is Galaxy International. One of their cheeses is gluten-, soy-, and dairy-free. I haven't been able to get it locally, though, so I haven't tried it. Ricera yogurt is also gluten-free, SF, DF and might work for you (not certain of the other ingredients, so you'd want to double-check). I don't care for it plain, but find that...
  12. I just discovered a new way to get glutened. I was baking cupcakes yesterday and as I slid the pan onto the top shelf it dawned on me that I probably rubbed crumbs off the rack onto the bottom pan of cupcakes. Sure enough, when I pulled out the bottom pan there were specks on them!
  13. Thanks again, everyone! I took the plunge yesterday. I scrubbed my kitchen from top to bottom & completely reorganized it. I broke the news to my kids. My eldest ds and my dh both were a bit upset, but I think they'll adjust. I told them they're welcome to have gluten outside the house, so that eased things. I scrubbed my toaster oven (for...
  14. Thanks, Tiffany. My boys like all the gluten free cooking & baking I do, so that won't be a hard sell. And especially if they still get some of their snacks away from the house. My dh will be a bit harder to convince. Right now it's his solution for the cc issues, since he can't be counted on to remember not to leave a mess, however I don't want him...
  15. Wow! I'm blown away - thank you so much for all the replies! I know I need to discuss it further with my family. I won't be rushing into this. A couple things to mention, though... Our kitchen is REALLY small, so there's no way to have separate counter space. (Literally, there's only about a 2ft x 2ft section of open counter.) I do have my own...
  16. Hi, everyone! I've been gluten-free (and soy free, casien free and glutamate free) since this summer and feeling quite a bit better. However, I'm still having some issues and occasional "glutenings" (I think). I try to be extremely careful about cc, but I'm sure there's still some - I'm the only one keeping this diet right now, but I have a DH, and three...
  17. I'll be watching this thread, too. I have a recipe for a sour cream sub, but haven't tried it yet. No ideas for a cottage cheese sub, though. Ricera brand yogurt is dairy free & gluten-free. I think the color leaves a lot to be desired & I don't eat it straight, but I really like it in smoothies and baking. Open Original Shared Link
  18. I just started taking Citracal. Their website says "There are no food ingredients in Citracal tablets. It is gluten-free. It contains no wheat, barley, oats, rye, dairy products, dextrose, or yeast. Also, Citracal Kosher is certified Pareve by the Orthodox Union for those observing dietary guidelines." Open Original Shared Link Hope that helps.
  19. So sorry you're feeling bad! I can defiantly sympathize. I never had much luck with OTC allergy meds, so don't have much to offer you there. I do use Flonase, though, with good results. Have you checked here: www.glutenfreedrugs.com Good luck & hope you feel better soon!
  20. What about using a different grain for your starch? Millet is good & "plain", quinoa has a bit more flavor. No real recipe ideas, though, sorry. If you're already doing potatoes and he's ok with them not being reheated, what about making kebobs? You could do the potatoes skewered with some meat and other veggies. My son loved a sandwich kebob I made...
  21. Oh, YUM! I just tried the Good Karma Mud Pie flavor. It was very good. DH even tried a taste (and he won't eat many gluten-free items without complaint) and he thought it was decent. The HFS here has numerous flavors, so I'm excited to have found this!
  22. Thank you for the responses so far! Keep 'em coming. I love the idea of freezing the week's worth of meals. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I visit my parents. I don't know if it would work for Thanksgiving, though, since we've got about a 7hr drive to get there. I don't know that things would stay frozen. I'll have to think about it. ...
  23. Hi, everyone! I'm hoping to get some advice an input from this wonderful group. I've only recently been diagnosed, so haven't had many opportunities to deal with being away from my home for days and what that entails now. Every year, we spend about a week with all of my IL's for Thanksgiving. (The last 3 years I've gotten horribly sick while I've been...
  24. Thanks again for the input! Andrea- I'll look into the Freeda vitamins; thanks for the suggestion. Gfpaperdoll- No hurt feelings here. :-) I would rather everyone in the family went gluten-free. I haven't researched a whole lot yet about how bad gluten is for everyone, but I've heard it repeated here quite a bit. And having them gluten-free would...
  25. Thank you both for your replies! I'll have to look into vitamins & supplements more. Right now I'm not taking any, since every time I'd buy one, then I'd wind up eliminating one of it's ingredients the next month - just got too expensive to keep throwing them out! Anyone have any good recommendations for a multi without gluten, dairy or glutamates...
