  1. Accidental ingestion isn't the only reason to worry about gluten in cosmetics! I had a horrible experience at the hairdressers that you guys need to know about. I NEVER had contact dermatitis before going gluten-free, no skin reaction to gluten of any kind at all. Then a couple of months into being gluten-free, I had my hair washed at the salon. I usually...
  2. Congratulations! Is that Orange County CA? Or NY? (I'm in Huntington Beach CA.) Biggest Frustration: Being horribly ill much of my adult life and not knowing why...but feeling like I was losing my mind. Missing out on a lot of fun with my kids. Hardest Thing to Give Up: Hands down, Take-out Chinese! What Made Life Easier as a Celiac: The...
  3. I think it may be related to my gall bladder, too. Can you have normal liver function and still have problems with your gall bladder? What I've read about gall bladder disease seems to fit my situation but I'm not clear how the two are related as far as making a dx is concerned.
  4. My son was nine, my daughter 11 when they had their biopsies, and they breezed through them. However, my boy began having full-on surgeries on his eyes when he was 14 months old--pre-op sedation, general anesthetic, post-op recovery, the whole bit, a total of four times. He doesn't remember ANY of it. And he was four years old when he had his final surgery...
  5. I have the same pain and my liver panel was normal. I'm waiting for my referral for my new GI to go through. I let you know if anything comes of it.
  6. I just answered my own question...I went on the web site under "Nutrition" and it says the burgers for the Whoppers are 100% ASDA Beef. One really fishy thing, though, is that they list some items as having "corn starch-modified", which is great, and gluten-free, and some as having "food starch-modified" then declare them as containing wheat. Then you'll...
  7. What about the beef at Burger King? My daughter is graduating from fifth grade on Friday and they are having BK burgers at the party. Their web site doesn't factor out the buns when it lists the items, so of course the box for wheat is checked. Does anybody know for sure before I pick up the phone?

    ARCHIVED Fragile

On Thursday I accidently ingested gluten, and by Friday morning I had my typical reaction, which is the worst headache imaginable, which does not respond to migraine medicine, and violent vomiting every 15-30 minutes, even water, both of which last for 48 hours, like clockwork, very predictable. I did not get out of bed until Sunday, and felt like I had...
  10. Dessa, I've read that some people have a hard time with quinoa. You might try eliminating that one and see if it helps. By the way, I went to the doc and she said my liver is fine, looks like I may have the beginnings of a gall bladder problem. I'm seeing my new GI guy soon, thank goodness!
  11. By the way, the only symptom my daughter had was occasional cracks in the corners of her mouth--NO intestinal symptoms at all. Lisa, please call a pediatric gastrointestinal specialist if you have to in order to get the back up you need to get these tests!
  12. Lisa--celiac disease is a genetic disease, and your children MUST be blood-tested. Your doctor's response is inexcusable. As soon as I was diagnosed, I phoned my kid's pediatrician, set up the appointment, and got the tests--both of them had results that warrented biopsies, and they both had them. Only my daughter has celiac disease. If I had followed...
  13. Amy, welcome to the message board! Please know that you aren't just undertaking a "diet", you are makiing a major lifestyle change, and it can't possibly happen overnight. You are only human, even though we as moms are used to having to be super=human, and you have to accept that you are going to make mistakes at first! But you are on the right track...
  14. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I can't tell you how much better I feel knowing that I'm not alone, and that there is a "kinder, gentler" way to heal myself!
  15. Huntington Beach, CA! Formerly from NJ...

  17. Carol B, FYI, after I stopped eating gluten, I was able to stop taking all my allergy meds, too...I had environmental allergies something awful, all my life, and they are managed now with an occasional spritz of decongestant. I don't know how or if this applies to any other allergies but it was an unexpected and very welcome bonus for me--hooray for the...
  18. You do need to call your doctor, but I want to tell you that I had the same problem before I stopped eating gluten, especially after I was particularly active. It even happened if I used my hands a lot, like if I did an intensive art project or decorated a cake or something like that--my hands and wrists would balloon up and be very painful. I had to stop...
  19. Dessa, THANK YOU for you posts! I am awaiting the results of my liver enzyme tests, and my right ribcage is really giving me trouble. I, too, had been on meds in the past that could affect the liver, and the last (pre-celiac disease) test showed a very high level. The doctor thought the result was disproportionately high for the low dose of medication...
  20. For those of you in NYC, go to www.celiacchicks.com. They are a fantastic resource! I live in Southern CA now but used to work in Lower Manhattan, and I love to go to that site not only for the info but for the east coast connection. I believe they are based in Brooklyn. Any celiac families in Orange County CA want to get together?

Granny, they may still have the Thunder Down Under on the dessert menu even if they haven't got a gluten-free menu. Flourless cakes and the like are actually "mainstream" items--give them a call. It would be really nice if you could just go there for dessert and coffee! (I've had it BTW, it's yummy!)
  22. After I was diagnosed, our kids, ages nine and 11 were blood-tested. Their tests indicated biopsies were in order. I was not thrilled, but we had them done at a very reputable children's hospital (CHOC in Orange Co., CA) under sedation and they were FINE...they got Gatorade in the recovery room and that was all they cared about! But, my nine-year-old had...
  23. Nita, you are trying so hard, you deserve a medal! Your posts are always upbeat and you maintain your enthusiasm even when we give you more "no-no's"!!! Believe me, you will be glad you went gluten-free on the cosmetics--I never had gluten sensitivity skin-wise until I went gluten-free, now I react severely to it, so much so that I almost freaked out at...
  24. I've been gluten-free for six months now and recently found myself sticking my tongue under the kitchen faucet because I had accidently licked an envelope! My family was cracking up! I was, too! I've learned to keep my sense of humor...
  25. I also had headaches of one kind or another almost every day before I went gluten-free. I almost never get one now! It is truly a miracle, and I hope I never see my neurologist or the inside of an MRI machine again for as long as I live... From "Wheat Free, Worry Free": "A study published in the journal "Neurology" in 2001 found that when celiacs adhered...
