  1. Hello, Ridgewalker I was married to a man who is bipolar. I'd urge you to take your time and trust your doctor to make the diagnosis of bipolarism or not. It sounds like she's a thoughtful diagnostician. She will guide you concerning the relation of bipolarism to gluten tolerance. It must have been shocking to hear that your doc was considering...
  2. Everybody pulls a physical load. Some of us get ours earlier than others, that's all. Your husband does sound like he's been pretty upset. I'm glad he started by talking with your doctor.
  3. On the falafel, not the dating Fiddle-Faddle's right, the mix needs checking...and looking further, I see that many Israeli falafel recipes do have bulgur. There are Jewish recipes without bulgur on the net, too... Look at this! This site is just loaded with things. How long has it been up and going? Whole Paycheck, Fiddle-Faddle...
  4. Centa from the U.S. here, just stopping by to admire you sociable people in Australia and New Zealand Aussie Peg started this thread a year or so ago and you've had 18,000 views! You erased the competition! All best from farther north.
  5. OK, after this one, I'll rest my oars for a few days. But if there are any takers out there, I also have a recipe for Dirty Rice, a name guaranteed to put a lot of people off . It's a traditional Cajun dish with chicken livers in it. If there are any takers out there, let me know, and up it goes. Otherwise, I'm going to sit tight ... I have a massive...
  6. Welcome to the site, Jason I hear what you're saying...those are all such important traditional dishes, and I know some of what you're talking about is being in a special place and sharing food, not a time to be insisting on being different but a time to be joining in Falafel is made from chickpeas or a mixture of chickpeas and fava beans, so it...
  7. You're welcoome. I'm happy as a clam with all these new wonderful recipes to try, thanks to all of you. Julie, great...we'll wait...sounds really good. Hathor, I had forgotten about hopping john, and that loaf looks very interesting. Matilde, thank you for leading me to Delia Smith...I have her site bookmarked now. I can see why she's famous in...
  8. Hello, I've about half-researched this one. I'll be interested to read what other members post on it. An alternative medicine practitioner strongly recommended that I check my pH and if it was acid, to eat foods to make my pH more alkaline. I did some reading about it on the net, but finally decided that the whole thing wasn't for me, even...
  9. Hello, Sesheta Much sympathy. I'm struggling with the same problem. When I expressed frustration to my doctor, and commented that I knew that I wasn't eating more, he remarked that it might be because my GI tract was healthier now and absorbing more of what I ate...that made some sense to me. I'm also in the metabolism slowdown that comes at midlife...
  10. I just found this thread Oh that Ener-G rice bread....I don't know anything about guns, but after I bit into its sour dry whatever it was I wanted to take a gun and SHOOT it. (Sorry, to the folks who like it toasted; maybe they stock old Ener-G bread in my nearby health food store.) Thank you, people who are posting favorite breads.
  11. Hello, Lightning bolt I'm worried about you, along with other people on the site. How are you doing now?
  12. Any more nice recipes, anybody? Maybe we can make a little cookbook here in this thread ....I have a few more. When I found out that I had celiac, I pretty much stopped eating bread and baked goods...I didn't like the taste of what I could find in the stores, either prepared or in mixes. So my attention went to rice... One more, from my collection....
  13. This is a "fixing in the kitchen" recipe. Things can be added or subtracted, but I do like the combination of the nuts and wild rice. Some scallions could be chopped, sauteed and added, for example. Or a little parsley or thyme. A Simple Combo 1 4-ounce box of wild rice 2 cups of long-grain white rice Roughly 5 cups of liquid (water, broth or...

    ARCHIVED Poll

I don't eat out much but when I do I nearly always get a salad. Poached things, occasionally...I'd probably risk roasted things, if they spit roasted them and the basting passed muster. I learned about P.F. Chang from this site...it turns out that we have one, so I'll be checking it out
  15. Wowsie, hathor, David, juliem, luvs2eat, Mango04...the recipes all look fantastic! You have solved my menu planning for weeks! Just do one of those rices & do simple things around it. Love those recipes with cilantro and lime in them...David, I've got the line out for the fish right now, to make that fish and savory rice dish. Coconut milk, yum...
  16. Juliebove, that rice dish in feelingdeliciousblogspot.com looks super! I'll be trying it this week. Hoping that we do get a "my favorite rice dish" thread going, here's another one, all vegetarian this time. It has 2 ingredients that you'll probably need to find in an Indian foodstore. I think the garnish really makes the dish. People who don...
  17. I agree. ...it does seem that people who don't have to deal with the problem often don't understand that even a tiny amount can cause a reaction. Unless you live in a household and see what it does to a person's health to eat wheat, it's also probably hard to imagine that celiac can create so much difficulty. How old are your parents-in-law...
  18. It's beginning to be late in the season for this summery dish in the States. It's like a room temperature paella. The one ingredient whose label you'll need to check carefully is the hard sausage. Look over the preservatives listed Basque Salad (from The Silver Palate Cookbook) 1/4 c. olive oil 12 green onion plus their green tops, thinly sliced...
  19. Heather, thanks so very much for starting this thread. Having sleep problems was one of the first things that manifested for me. What gave me sleep, rest and strength back was taking wheat out of my diet. It took about a month before I noticed change in the sleep/rest, but it definitely came back, after I cut out the gluten.
  20. Hello CanadianKaren I just selected "search" (darker grey bar above our posts), selected "More search options", selected the whole "Gluten Free....Forum" and typed the words "autism celiac" selecting "most relevant" and got quite a lot, including your posts in earlier months, but there are also quite a few links and some statements of direct experience...

    ARCHIVED Rice

It sure does taste good. They're expensive , but sesame oil and hazelnut oil hit the spot dressing the rice the way you do, too. Once I figured that out, my precious bottle of hazelnut oil was history....partly because my non-celiac visitors were "hitting the bottle" right along with me

    ARCHIVED Rice

10-lb bags from the nearby Asian market. It's so inexpensive, and you can choose from basmati rice, jasmine rice, etc. I'm a basmati-ophile. ViktOr's right...olive oil is good. And you can start off with a little olive oil in the bottom of the pan, soft saute some chopped onion, plus whatever flavor you want to go all through the rice...a wee bit...
  23. Let me restate that: it's not over until the last aria is sung. My, I miss Pavarotti...
  24. Hello VyktOR Well, there seems to be a trend in your comments that you don't consider your celiac a disease, merely a biological abnormality that you have to deal with seriously, to prevent a condition of disease occurring. Your comments on cooking read to me to have the same undertone: it's not all that hard for you to control your diet: you've researched...
  25. Hello Sandy...cute kids you have there in your avatar Yes, this is what I understand as well. However, I'm curious about another matter: whether or not people inherit different intestinal tract capabilities. That isn't conditional. Age of onset, co-morbid conditions, stress levels, and growth ..all t hat you list...are all conditional on the...
