  1. I can't believe nobody has mentioned Puffins! I love Puffins!

The honey rice ones are my favorite (although they will never replace Cheerios or Shredded Wheat...)

The honey rice ones have less fiber than the regular ones, so I usually mix them half and half. I add raisins too!!

I just bought the Enjoy Life "granola" today too and I thought it was TERRIBLE. Nothing at all like the homemade granola I used to make...

Can you tell that I love cereal?

I love puffins, enjoy life granola gives me the same symptoms as if I ate gluten. It is the flaxseed..it tears my intestines up. I can eat flaxseed oil though, just not the seeds.

  2. I've been reading that you should avoid peanuts during pregnancy to help prevent a peanut allergy in a child esp. if the mom has food allergies. I don't have a nut allergy, and no one in my family does either but of course there is the celiac, soy and casein allergies. I have a recipe for peanut butter chocolate balls that I've been craving and can't decide if I should risk it or not..... I am eating nuts on occassion, like Lara Bars, handful of almonds, nut butters in my smoothies but no peanut butter. What do you all think?

    Amy

I'm 10 weeks and crave peanut butter all the time... I had gluten free waffles and peanut butter for dinner the other night and i like to use the light brown rice bread and grill peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. THe peanut butter balls sound good, would you share the recipe.

  3. My husband and I are talking about trying to get pregnant here. I have not been able to find a vitamin that I don't react badly to. I am gonna ask my ob-gyn about not eating one, but does anyone have any idea if it is fine to skip that or if I could possible find a pill that contain folic acid only (I get folate from a bar I am eating)? Would it be safe not to eat a vitamin at all?

Check with your obgyn on what exactly you need. I know you need 30mg of IRON a day, and lots of calcium...so you are probably going to have to take individual viatamins on the ones you are not getting enough of.

  4. I used to have the same problem...I couldn't stop with one bottle...I still drink wine about 3-4 times a week, but stop after 2 or 3 glasses. I stopped craving as much wine when i stopped eating carbohydrates when drinking wine. If i drink wine, i've either eaten fruit all day or I drink it with protein meals such as cheese, salmon, chicken, ect...with no crackers or veggies. It has helped a lot, and if i get a sweet toothe after drinking a couple of glasses, I eat as much ice cream as my heart desires (because it is primary diary, a protein). After ice cream, i'm pretty much done with wine. Before i would eat chocolate, cookies, and other deserts that just made me crave more wine. it might be worth a try. On the fruit days with wine, i usually loose 3-4 pounds!!!! So you can drink and still loose weight!!!

  5. I'm confused. Why exactly would that make food healthier?

lol. it doesn't make it healthier, it makes it where calories don't count :)!!!! I love splurging on as much gluten free cookies that i want. It's nice to eat things that we normally can't gluten free and not worry about gaining weight.....it is the beverly hills diet and i recommend the first book..it is amazing, at least following the rules. In fact the rules are listed below for your convienence, so you can eat as much as you want without gaining weight!!!

  6. Sorry guys I know all I seem to do is rant my butt off on this boards lately. But this seems to be the only place that would understand.

I'll keep it short and sweet...basically what's happening is my roommate is creating situations that would harm my health and expects me to clean up her mess. It was bad enough that she continues to make sandwiches on the counter without using a plate and makes me wipe them up (I wear gloves, obviously). But now she's pissed because I wouldn't take out her trash--the garbage bag is not tied up and there's a bread bag sitting on the top!!

SO today the counter was once again covered with breadcrumbs, so I had a total panic/asthma attack and from now on I will never clean it up, and I am going to use my own trash can. I have one in my room already but I'll use it for kitchen-related garbage, and I will only take out my own. Let hers sit there for days and rot.

I just need advice on how to make her stop being a lazy idiot without moving out (because that is NOT an option).

    ~ Lisa ~

Unfortunately lisa, you really have no control over what your roommate does, she is her own person. She is not going to change, i suggest you find a way to get out of the lease. I have struggled with roommates in the past, and it really doesn't get better but worse...especially on the cleaning up things...she probably won't take out her trash and then you wont even be able to use the kitchen...contact your landlord and tell them that your health is at risk, they should understand. Mine did and i still got my deposit back;) good luck,

  7. This thread got me to thinking about Nutty Flax, my favorite (and allegedly) gluten-free cereal.

Folks reported reactions. I was initially skeptical as you can see, and now I'm not quite sure. I noticed a gluten-sort of brain fog that didn't seem like it could be attributable to anything else, among other things. So I'm experimenting with cutting it out.

I am curious as to others' experiences. I suppose my reaction could be to something else; it is often so hard to pin down what one is reacting to. I react to a number of different things, but only gluten gives me a bad two day brain fog.

I would hate to give up this product without reason. They claim to be gluten-free and that they periodically test. The cereal is higher in fiber than any other gluten-free cereal I've found, plus it has omega 3s. I also like to have variety in breakfast, and eliminating this product will make that pretty hard, given my other food restrictions.

I'm not sure what cereal it is but it says "nut free and gluten free" it has flaxseeds in it. But both times i have eaten it i get the same reaction i get from eating gluten.

  8. I was self-diagnosed because i went to doctors all my life and not one could tell me why i had a rash on my arm and why i was so deficient in so many vitiamins and minerals. Finally, i got sick of my bledding sore on my hip bone, an itchy rash all over my stomach (how could i date? i couldn't), diarria waking me up at 6 in the morning until 2 pm, fatigue always, wondering if i was going to go into acomma when i fell asleep and never wake up, feeling good when i didn't eat, and so on. I could give a damn if a doctor diagnose me or not, the fact is, i am well, i don't wake up with diaria (unless accident cc), my skin is clear, i don't feel tired, i am well. And yes, when i get cross contamination, i do get very ill. I do not need approval from a doctor to let me know that gluten makes me sick or effects my nervous system (hands and feet go very numb after cc), and that i pass out the next day after having cc. I am still going to talk on this forum because it is nice to have a network where people are effected the same way after eating gluten. There are great ideas on recipes and good topics on what foods might have gluten in them. Oh, I told my sister for years that i have celiac's and she just didn't believe me....about 8 months ago, she called me and said, you totally have celiac's, she just took a course on celiac's at the medical school she is going to, to become a doctor.

  9. Unfortunately, it doesn't even go through my body to get a reaction, after eating oats I get an immediate horrible stomach ache and 20-30 minutes later I throw up until my stomach is empty.(this has happened 3-5 times before i gave them up)

  10. I get sick quite frequently, only occurs when i eat out...i pretty much had to cut out bone fish, because i get sick everytime i go there, pf changs, and other restuarants. I seem to do good at mexican restuarants just ordering chx dishes and beans no rice. I can't eat anything processed unless it has only been processed on gluten free machinery, and i can not eat corn fed and grain fed beef, i can only eat grass fed beef. The best thing that works for me is salmon and cheese. I have a rash on my back right now because i added corn back into my diet a month ago and now it is out of my diet again. So no corn, eggs, or gluten for me.

  11. I believe in coconut oil as well for it's strong immune builder. I have recently started taking it and have a chocolate banana recipe using it.

Has anyone read the coconut oil miracle? It is an awesome book, it supports all of the benefits coconut has to offer. I love cooking with it, it makes the food really light. Because I have a very high fat diet (fat seems to be where i get a lot of my energy from to sustain me through the day), coconut oil is very relaxing on my digestive system. the complex of coconut oil does not need bile to be digested or absorbed into the blood stream, so it can be instantly absorbed into the blood stream and be used for energy.

  12. Hi, Im new here. I was diagnosed with Celiac via a blood test a week ago. The doctors nurse said my reading was off the charts, and my Doc didnt advise the biopsy, he just recomended a Gluten free diet.

I have been trying so hard the last week to eat right. But I spend so much time studying foods I can eat, and worrying about getting glutened that I am a wreck. I have spent $300 on food. Its mostly very fatening. Dinty Moore stew, Hormel Chili, Fritos and Bean dip. I eat a salad every day. I have messed up three times that I know of in this last week.

I ate a hashbrown at McDonalds because I read somewhere on here that it was safe. Well, MCD's website says different. And I have been cooking in an old Iron Skillet that has cooked a thousand fried chicken meals! So after a week of this stuff I am back to square one.

    This is so depressing.

Thanksgiving is coming up. I cant make myself trust anyones cooking. Im so afraid of cross contamination, or something. How can I eat at my Mother in Laws? I suppose I will take a can of Dinty Moore. Even if she cooks ham, is it a safe ham? Did the glaze have Gluten?

    My question's are:

    - Can I ever go to someones house and eat with them? I mean even if they make a Gluten free entre, how do I know the skillet or pan they used was safe? What about their contaminated can opener?

    - Do I really have to worry about kissing my daughter after she eats, or petting my dog after she eats?

-Am I reading too much stuff on here?

From what I read, I have to get new pots and pans, new utensils, new can openers, and new dish washing tools (scrubbers), to keep from getting CC.

Can I get glutened from soap? From Shampoo?

I cant eat at Waffle House anymore because everything is cooked on the same grill!

    This is all too much.

    PS, about me:

Im a male, 42 years old. Widowed father of one. (Shes 11)

I have had bad IBS all my life. I have had extreme anxiety, OCD, and some depression, (brought on by my wifes death 6 years ago).

I saw a show on TV about Celiac and the symptoms sounded just like me. Except Im not skinny.

So I went to the Doc and got the blood test.

I have not been back to see him again. He didnt advise I get the Biopsy. I feel like I should, but I dont really want too.

I distrust all doctors, since one killed my wife. But thats another story.

How can I live like this? My poor daughter. I am so angry, and worried about this new lifestyle. I have no time for her now. My mind is so full of worry over this. All I can think about is "what I can eat, where I can eat, where I can go, no more vacations", that kind of stuff.

I bought the book advertised on this site, (Gluten free shopping - 20,000 items) It is very confusing as none of the stores are in my area (Arkansas)

Any advise would be greatly apprecieated.

    Thanks in advance.

Check out the restuarant sections for gluten free menus' like bone fish..anyways, when i am invited over to a friends for dinner, i always bring a dish that i know i will enjoy so i will not starve. I will ask curious questions like, "oh that smells good, what did you use for spicing" cooks will always answer you, and if they say something you can't have, you don't have to make a big deal over it and just eat your dish you brought over. Every time i go to a bbq, i bring my own season meat and cheese! Maybe i am in the mood for chips and dip so i make a dip with sour cream and bring kettle bran potatoe chips. Whatever i feel like that day i bring to the persons house, and enough to share with everyone and still be able to get full off of it.

  13. I noticed, during a search that some of the members here have a self diagnosis of Celiac's because they KNOW that they feel horrible eating gluten and "don't need a doctors diagnosis". Sorry if I sound snotty, I am not trying to be that way :)

I have been "gluten lite" for months now as I know it makes me feel horrid but I will occasionally eat it when there is a party or we go out to eat. :) I then have a price to pay and sometimes the reaction isn't so bad and it's worth it. BTW, I don't have a diagnosis of Celiac's but am waiting for a blood test to come back to the GI's office. SO! If I have been "gluten lite" for so long, I am expecting that it will be negative and then I am at a dead end to this mystery of mine. I have most every single symptom that a lot of people here have described and I am feeling confident that I am one of you (LOL).

So, I am wondering how many of you have the official diagnosis and if so, what positives does this bring you? TIA!

I'm self diagnosed, i only wish the doctors had an idea when i was growing up, i was in and out of the doctor's office my whole life to figure out what was wrong with me, know i go to the doctor and let them know i have celiac's, and i have not had one argue with me or make me take a test, they say my symptoms are right on.

I do want to let you know that it is very dangerous to be "lite", just a little will destroy your intestines and it takes 3-6 months to heal, that is 3-6 months without correct absorbtion of vitamins and minerals that can lead to very dangerous life threats. I had a neurologist tell me that eating gluten as a celiac that it can cause your immune system to start attacking your nervous system....do your hands and feet fall asleep easy? Many parts of my body falls asleep easy, but has gotten a lot better since i do not consume gluten. If i accidently get gluten, after having cramping and throw up systems in my stomach, my body parts start to fall asleep really easy. Just be careful.

  14. I seem to get heartburn, when I drink certain flavors of gatorade that have modified food starch. Anyone know more about this, I just recently learned that grain distilled vinegar is alright (ketchup, mustard, mayo, salad dressings etc..., that has been a great relief!

I react heavily with grain distilled vinegar. I have had to switch to gluten free mustard, mayo, salad dressing, and anything that say vinegar on it unless it states applecider vinegar or balsamic vinegar. You might not react...but i am very, very sensitive to a mild does of gluten. I'm curious as to where you learned that?

  15. when i was first diagnosed, i had a hard time eating almonds too...even till today, but it is not as bad as it was when i was first diagnosed. My theory, is that my intenstines where still to weak to digest something pretty hard, and have it go through if not completely digested. It irritated my intestines more because of its hard tecture. I did soft foods for a long time...i just recently been able to digest corn, and that is after 3 years.

  16. Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but listen to what this gasto doctor-a celiac disease specialist mind you-at Johns Hopkins Hospital just told me: He noticed in my file that I had mentioned I'd quit smoking in 1997, and he looked at me and said, "Are you aware that smoking protects against Celiac Disease?" Well, my jaw dropped. I've never heard of smoking protecting against much of anything. He insisted this has been researched in the recent past, and that studies have shown smoking does assist in alleviating the symptoms of celiac disease and other bowel diseases. He also warned me that by quitting smoking, I may kicked off the onset of my disease. Isn't this strange but interesting information?! He said, "I'm NOT suggesting you go back to smoking, I just wanted to let you know that." Well, he IS a celiac disease specialist at the #1 hospital in the US, but no, I'm NOT going back to smoking!!

Looking back on it, my symptons got horrible when i quite smoking and that's when i found out that i had celiac's...i am smoking now. I don't smoke MJ anymore, but i almost had to when i was having reactions and didn't know what was going on to heal the pain.
