  1. When I looked at the weeping wound with soft, curling skin on the edges, I immediately thought of a fungal infection. You did say in the first bit there that you are gluten free. Have these skin problems been appearing while you are gluten-free or did it happen before? A little more information might be helpful. Do they happen after an accidental...
  2. The produce manager at my local store called his suppliers to ask about this. He said they used only a food grade parafin for citrus and apple (if they sprayed them at all.) Mike M who tests with the home test kit also found that there was no gluten in the little stickers they use. I hope this helps!
  3. So you don't think it's the goose that laid the golden egg?
  4. I wonder how this idea differs from the gluteneze (sp?) enzymes that you can buy in health food stores? It is the same theory. I have not found those pills to be useful at all-- I tried taking them after getting glutened and they really didn't help. You are supposed to take them before you eat the gluten, but I don't trust them enough to even try that...
  5. Thanks Jestgar! I had a feeling this was the case. :-)
  6. Hi gfb1. I have a question for you. Many of the people who get tested here do so through Enterolab. You will see many posts here regarding this company-- both positive and negative. If you read the fine print of the Enterolab genotyping results, they say they send their samples to the American Red Cross for typing. They do the other tests in house...
  7. Each of your kids will have at least one of the genes. That means they could all develop it. The one that is symptomatic, tests positive and reacted positively to the gluten-free diet is also celiac. You will need to watch the others like a hawk and this must always be your first consideration if they get sick. The genes can kick in later and nobody knows...
  8. I have the DQ7 and DQ6 and I have it (diagnosed). They did a study in Europe and found that 2% of the celiacs they tested there had the 7 (and not the 2 or 8). If I were you, if I were symptomatic with these genes and I responded to the diet I would consider myself a celiac. Welcome to the club!
  9. The produce manager called back and he had a partial answer. He says that none of the sprays on citrus and apples (if they are sprayed) have gluten. He says they use a food grade parafin. So that part is good news! So I don't know what happened with Mike M's test. Maybe his oranges came from a different supplier? As for the stickers, he says those...
  10. I found this information from about allergies.com. I have pasted the relevant parts below. What is fascinating is the lists of foods, together with the parts per million data. I feel it confirms my theory about concentrations. Quote: Less is known about hives/swelling and anaphylaxis as a result of sulfites, although various cases have been described...
  11. So that begs the question-- how do you wash gluten off of something? I have read in this forum that even alcohol only dillutes it. Would a regular soap take care of it? And how would you know which soaps are safe for produce?
  12. I called the produce manager at my supermarket and asked him to look into it. He is calling his suppliers and hopefully I will have some information later today. He was very nice and understood the problem. In the case of a sticker, I am not so sure people would necessarily have realized what it was. Let's say it only has a little gluten-- then you...
  13. ive-- I avoid those foods too. I can't do cabbage or cauliflower, and limit onions and garlic. I do use onions and garlic in cooking, but I always regret it after. The symptoms with those foods are more gastrointentinal in nature (yolks too)-- they do not produce a rash like eating dried fruit does or using a vinegar made from grapes. I don't know why...
  14. The local markets are doing better with organic produce here and I buy it when they have it, but some things you just can't get at all. But they put the stickers on the organic stuff as well-- especially the organic-- because they want to make sure it rings up at the organic price. I was looking at the older post by Mike M who tests for gluten with the...
  15. Yes-- celebrex (given to me for "arthritis") nearly killed me. The reaction to drugs is more severe than the reaction to foods containing sulfites. I suppose it has to do with the concentration. The best way to check a medicine is to look it up online and find the chemical formula or molecular structure. Lots of times Wikipedia or the manufacturer...
  16. Hi everybody! Does anybody know if the adhesive on the stickers they put on fruits and vegetables has gluten in it? It hit me today as I was eating an apple. And if they do have gluten, how can we get rid of it, short of cutting of the fruit around it? How could we even find out? Then it hit me again-- they often treat fruits with sprays or coatings...
  17. It could also be fibroid tumors. I hate to mention this, but have them do an ultrasound to see. That should also show an ovarian cyst. If you tell them what has been going on, they should order this for you without too much hemming and hawing. Good luck!
  18. Here are the ones I have confirmed that I use: supermarket: Burt's bees gloss (in the squeeze tubes) and the lipstick in the tiny chapstick-type tubes carmex (can be used as gloss) Ecco Bella (if you can find it) Department Store or Sephora: Chanel (all) Nars (all) Clinique (not all-- look at the label for the ingredients above) Lancome Rouge...
  19. Hi weeza! Yes I have the sulfite/ sulfate allergy too. I get a bright red, hot and raised rash on the face, neck and chest. If it is bad I can get swelling of the joints (mostly wrists and ankles) and lips/ tongue and throat (I bet your scratchy throat is the beginning of this.) It can also cause some nausea, which might explain the vomiting. In addition...
  20. Here is what I know about Trader Joe's. They have a champaign-citrus vinegar and it is on their gluten free list (available in the store.) It does not say gluten free on the bottle, but it lists "natural flavors" in the ingredients. The rest of the ingredients are okay. I took a chance. I got zapped. Mild, but I did get zapped. That is enough...
  21. Wrigleys tells me that all of their gum as well as the lifesavers and gummi savers are gluten free. The powder on the gum is the sweetener. There is absolutely no gluten-- not even in the gumbase. Hip hip hooray!
  22. In my experience, DH is dificult to photograph. What tends to happen is that the red, irritated popped blister sites predominate, plus the blisters pop easily. I have had them form and pop within hours of being glutened. And if somebody has had it chronically for a number of years, say, then there is scarring (kind of like acne scarring in the sense that...
  23. The blog is at the very bottom of the left hand box under the personal photo on my page (click on my user name). My photos are not as good/ clear as yours are, but you can see the blisters. (I took it of myself). The best one is in the sunlight, I think. They look just like shingles blisters nut the occur differently and do not stay on one side or follow...
  24. Yes. They will itch and hurt and the same time. I have a picture of mine on my blog about lipstick and you can see they are like these too. Get a biopsy and you will have a diagnosis! On the happy side-- I used to get these all the time and they could pop up ANYWHERE on the body. I used to be terrified it would get my eyes. I have been gluten-free...
