I don't know of any scientific studies but I too used to have D/vomit & almost pass out from pain w/menstrual cramps - not every month, but maybe 2 to 4x/year; other months just really bad cramps now that am gluten-free, haven't had the D/vomit combination - still have cramps, but much milder. Also my breast soreness during PMS is much milder/almost...

condolences on your mother's death my mom also died 4 yrs ago of lymphoma - the tumors were on her adrenal glands - like your mom, very quick (less than 2 months from first related dr visit to death) dr's said "don't worry, nothing she had was hereditary" ('spots' on lung, abnormal brain scan in addition to cancer). now, looking back, I'm convinced...

ARCHIVED Mom Thinks I Was Cursed By The Devil...lol! Rant
babysteps replied to Bravie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You may want to check out advice from women's shelters on leaving an abusive relationship - in a way that creates the least chance for violence. And you might want to coordinate with your brother. Unless he is less a lightning rod for your mothers' emotional and/or physical violence, he may want to make his own plans and you may both want to leave at... -
I second the elimination idea With perhaps the first food introduction being *cooked* (by you) fruit to see if that's an issue - if cooked fruit is okay, you know it's a food thing not a cc of cooking items thing. if cooked-by-you fruit not okay, consider crumbs lurking in: cutting boards (unless fruit being okay rule these out) wooden utensils...

ARCHIVED Cheerios
babysteps replied to chasing4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
there are some gluten-free cereals that look like cheerios, - so fare the ones I've tried aren't that great There are some gluten-free rice cereals that are very much like rice crispies (rice crispies are not gluten-free, that malt again) Also there are gluten-free corn flakes, mostly with plenty of sweetener (not my taste, but perhaps a plus... -
ARCHIVED What Are The Best Foods To Eat...
babysteps replied to nikki2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Unfortunately the answer is, "it depends" - mostly on your own gut I am fine with eggs, but they are a common allergen (and though as I understand it a gut reaction is a sensitivity symptom, not an allergy thing, there seems to be a big overlap between 'most common allergens' and 'most common sensitivities') same with salmon - I am fine with... -

Birdie - hooray for you for getting closer to well! gluten-free may unmask other food sensitivities if you have them - there's a whole forum here on that alone ('natural flavors' always get me). Seems like a whole journey of self-awareness sometimes Ooh yes, pancakes I've had success following "blini" recipes (basically small, firm pancakes... -
ARCHIVED What Types Of Reactions Do You Get When You're Glutened?
babysteps replied to blondebombshell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
symptoms, what everyone else said and also joint pain & swelling, esp. hands, knees & ankles night sweats (yes, checked w/obgyn, is not early menopause - and no gluten=no night sweats) restless leg I usually only vomit after glutening when I am PMS'ing or during the first 2 days of my menstrual cycle I know, TMI, but if it... -
ARCHIVED Does Gluten Reaction Worsen; The Longer You're Away From It?
babysteps replied to Ivanna44's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hm, is there a pack-rat symptom too with celiac?!? I am glad to hear after a while reaction may get less - mine is still increasing. But I'm getting better at avoiding cc. And no shooting D for several months now For pack-rats and all of us who love to start projects (but not always finish), I have found Open Original Shared Link helpful. May... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For A Headache Because Most Pills Have Gluten
babysteps replied to bon appetit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
definitely was tired & getting more & more fuzzy-brained before going gluten-free. Also bloated better on all now. For me, I also have to watch out for how much sugar I have, especially later in the day - or I will go almost narcoleptic on the couch before bed. But gluten-free and without too much sugar (one cookie, okay; 3 cookies,... -
All my tests are "normal" but my dietary response to gluten is quite strong - most symptoms you can think of except the special skin condition DH (and some days I can convince myself of very mild signs of that, too). All of which go away when I avoid gluten. Many people on this forum, and some doctors, view positive test results as conclusive but negative...

ARCHIVED Question About Flax Seeds & Peanuts
babysteps replied to 1GreysFan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hope you are feeling better some posters have said many (or all?) dry-roasted nuts end up with some gluten - not an "ingredient", but part of the process to help the nuts not stick together. I avoid any nuts "processed on shared equipment with wheat", some eaters won't do "processed in the same facility as wheat" either. Seems that about 75% of... -

few things to share, might be helpful for you - (wow this ended up being long...apologies) chocolate sensitivity - me too! It comes and goes in my life. I know I'm not good with caffeine (neither can most females in my family, and like you I don't need it for the energy) - even green tea will make me a little buzzy in head/cranky to others (it's lower... -
where do you live? I ask since stores/labeling laws vary In US, the ground meat must be labeled with its ingredients, so have your wife read the package - any "natural flavors" may be an issue for you (they are for me, but some on this forum can tolerate them). Many ground meats have "natural flavors" added (even in a health food store), but most...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Dining In Southern Ct
babysteps replied to NewGFMom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi I live in Fairfield, can't say I know of a restaurant w/ gluten-free pasta -- although plenty of stores carry it here - Trader Joe's, Mrs. Green's (local health food store on Post Road), even Stop & Shop (one at each end of town on Post Road). I am still relatively new to this, someone else may know of a place. I don't know if any local restaurants... -
concur with everyone else - allow D or SIL-2b to (try to) educate MIL in non-judgemental tone -- they may want to practice this eat first go, enjoy and wash hands after leaving restaurant to avoid cc (this comes from my own silly experience...I glutened myself in January after handling breaded chicken cutlets at an event where I did not eat...

many Costco, Walmart, and now even my local supermarket (stop&shop, a new england name for some national chain) stores have gluten-free sections and/or products that are less $ than the health food stores shop the sales everywhere, and especially at the health food stores - I got half-price gluten-free corn chips last week, seemed to be an in-store...

Thanks I'd read that suggestion and tried it in my 'controls' section but not while on the forum... (had also tried logging off and back on again, rebooting - the simplest solution is best, yes?) makes sense now

okay, let's see if a new post helps I updated my avatar, but now I see my old picture - but with the dimensions of my new one (!) in my controls panel I see the new picture so maybe a new post will work the wonders... ah, technology!

allergicgirl's blog has a helpful 'protocol' for restricted eaters (she is gluten-free plus other food allergies) - Open Original Shared Link if there isn't a gluten-free menu, be prepared to 1) give your educational speech, 2) ask manager/server about 2 or 3 likely items, with substitutions requested/suggested, 3) hear back from kitchen 4) complete your...

Two downtown New Haven ideas: Foster's (no gluten-free menu, but chef very accommodating, will come out & help you order, although he didn't know if the miso was actually all-soy or not so I avoided that, has a few gluten-free desserts, and can do gluten-free birthday cake if you call ahead) Ibiza (ate there as part of a group, they were very aware...

ARCHIVED I'm An Idiot - Chicken !
babysteps replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our Stop-and-Shop, the plain ones are okay...but the 'italian' ones have all kinds of spices & "natural flavors" and etc and don't work with my system. And the barbecue ones are even worse (well, for length of ingredient list - never tried as I don't like sweet stuff on my meat). Not sure I trust the rotisserie to keep everything separate...so haven...
