  1. I know the topic of wine comes up again and again, with some folks in the "all wine is gluten-free" camp and some in the "not sure why, but I react to wine" camp. Here's an interesting approach that suggests there can be both camps In the current Wine Enthusiast magazine, there's a short piece (not yet online unless I'm missing something) titled...
  2. I think the combo of celiac & low body fat together may be part of the explanation. I am at the lower edge of 'normal' BMI, and prior to going gluten-free if I was particularly physically active (dance classes or fitness camp or whatever) I would not have my period. I don't know if there are current studies, but my late grandmother (born...
  3. Jackpru, if you want to keep track of your blood pressure on your own, your local grocery store (or in some areas town hall or library) may have a free blood-pressure station. Free is my favorite price! Obviously this is *not* a replacement for a Dr. checking out your immediate issue, but it could help you figure out if your bp does spike at times....
  4. Maddy1- search this forum for "clams" or "woodmans" - At least 2 of the famous clam places in Ipswich/Essex have lots of gluten-free choices, so if you're willing to travel a bit further than half an hour, you could get a fix there, too. Or go to the restaurant section of the forum - I think there's a semi-recent thread there too. Good luck, happy...
  5. I live in CT (not RI), and haven't been to Alice's, but their website Open Original Shared Linkis up & running and highlights gluten-free!
  6. Aveda products are not all gluten free, but there are some that are (or at least there used to be when I checked last year!). Best to read labels (to avoid the obvious ones), then try calling or going online. I just went to their site and couldn't find any gluten-free list right away, but they had both toll-free phone# and online chat options. ...
  7. For paprika substitute, you can try the spice form of sumac - used in Turkey, especially for kabobs. Not at every grocery store, but I know that Penzeys carries it and I bet a lot of natural food stores do, too.
  8. Often I cook up a bunch of chicken thighs (enough for 4 or 5 days) and put in my fridge at home, take with veggie & rice wherever I'm going for lunch. If there's a fridge I end up microwaving to warm up, if no fridge I put in an insulated bag (without an ice pack) and eat at room-ish temp. Sometimes, especially if not much protein in the fridge, tuna...
  9. I had always been very stable in my weight as an adult (toward low end of "normal" range by BMI or gov't weight charts). Then, just before (self) diagnosis, gained 5 pounds that wouldn't go away, then creeping to 7 lbs. Never felt full, no matter how much I ate. And quite bloated. Lost the 7 lbs in I swear 10 days once I went gluten-free. Actually...
  10. Seems possible to me that the juices could be suspect. I know I have found that any meat that isn't just plain may (or may not) have an ingredient list hiding on the packaging some place, and my favorite culprit is "natural flavors". Even ground beef from some stores/brands... Couple of ideas if you want to play Sherlock Holmes - go back to the store...
  11. I am self-diagnosed, also fell into the 'gluten free before testing' trap. My GP says my tests are fine, there is nothing to label for me (well, except my low D and low-normal iron - hm, connect the dots anyone?) My OB-GYN says my dramatic dietary response means that I am celiac. See my signature, various cousins have various degrees of Dr.-type diagnosis...
  12. Here's the link to the article, although it may require a subscription to see the whole thing: Open Original Shared Link Basically, General Mills figured out that people who eat gluten-free are very loyal customers. So their marketing costs for gluten-free can be low - some booths at gluten-free events, a little targeted advertising on gluten-free...
  13. FYI Here is the link Open Original Shared Link, may require subscription . * JULY 2, 2009 For General Mills, Wheat-Free Items Are Tricky to Make, Cheap to Market By ILAN BRAT
  14. Here's a Open Original Shared Linkabout the joys of freezing that Mark Bittman of the New York Times did. I found it a couple weeks ago through Allergic Girl's blog Open Original Shared Link (she is also gluten free). Enjoy the freezer! I admit that I usually freeze ingredients rather than meals. But that's because I have a very short commute! When...
  15. I'm guessing this is more a specific-to-me thing than a celiac thing in general, but for what it's worth: I couldn't tolerate deodorants/antiperspirants (except the mineral salt kind) for several years - by trial, error and luck I discovered that if I have 'too much' vitamin C (like the amount in a regular multivitamin) I would get hive-like reactions...
  16. I'm glad I did what I did last Saturday - was at a small potluck dinner, the woman who brought the rice was proud of leaving the pasta out of her pilaf recipe, but there were 2 kinds of Campbells Soup involved. Since I don't usually buy canned soup & since she didn't have the cans with her, I had no idea whether they were gluten-free. So I didn't have...
  17. That's funny!
  18. Have now eaten 2x at Forbidden City Bistro on Main St in Middletown CT. Basically a quite nice Chinese (with some other asian influences) restaurant, they also have a bar you can eat at and they do take out. They can handle gluten-free very well for a Chinese restaurant. And they have a nice wine list The first time we were there (2 months ago or...
  19. My (deceased) mother was a hoarder, perhaps not quite to the same extent (the vermin stayed in the garage as far as I could ever tell) but not a safe kitchen! Not until after she died did I find out that hoarding is now considered a form of OCD. Anyway, hang in there, definitely keep you & DH safe by not staying overnight and not eating at your...
  20. yes, my joints seemed to suddenly "age" about 9 mos before my diagnosis (ankles, knees, hips, elbows, hands especially - mild to moderate pain, plenty of creaking, some swelling). My hips had been somewhat sensitive long before that, and sometimes my fingers would 'freeze' up - the knuckles not responding to my brain's instructions. Once gluten-free...
  21. Just flew back from San Diego to Newark last night. They did not have a special gluten-free meal for me - but the attendant said that they had just started doing special meals again out of San Diego. There was one special meal (not gluten-free) for another passenger. So it may be hit-or-miss at the moment from non-"hub" airports for Continental. ...
  22. welcome! two things 1-if you want an actual diagnosis, get tested *before* going gluten free. Check out the pre-diagnosis/testing threads for lots more info, but basically if you don't have gluten in your system some/most of the tests are quite likely to give you a false negative for celiac 2-for what to check ingredients on, it depends on the...
  23. earlier this week I actually received a hot gluten-free meal on a continental flight from Newark (NY area) to San Diego. My husband ordered it when making the reservation online. I received: individually wrapped Jenny's macaroon green salad (lettuce, carrot shreds, cabbage shreds) fat-free salad dressing packet (skipped that, it had 'natural...
  24. my spouse's mother always said apple or banana could help your bowels 'slow down' after an upset stomache, so you may not be alone!
  25. check out '30 minute meal' type recipe books, they have a lot of great, easy ideas. If you can have cream, it's a great sauce builder since it thickens as it heats. Other gluten-free ways to a nice thick sauces include cornstarch or arrowroot powder (definitely for the cornstarch make a 'slurry' first with a little liquid, then mix in with your sauce...
