Welcome Amy, It can be kind of scary at first. After while you will find there are lots of foods to eat though. Staying away from dairy and soy may help you adjust. Cooking your food at home from whole ingredients is also very helpful. Limiting sugar and starch can help too. Many people end up with a lot of bloating at first due to the bacterial...

Just be patient. People do need some time to adjust to the idea of gluten free and diabetes on top. It sure sounds like your house is a good environment for him to learn how to eat right though. I've experimented with making some sugar free candy before, using stevia to sweeten it. I haven't reviewed these recipes for diabetes friendliness issues, but...

ARCHIVED How Did I Get Glutened!?!
GFinDC replied to CanineGluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi CG, If you decide to get tested, it is important that you continue eating a regular gluten diet until the testing is completed. There is no "perfect" test for celiac disease right now, but the best chance of detecting the antibodies is before starting the gluten-free diet. Even then it is hit or miss. Ask your doctor to do the full celiac antibody... -

ARCHIVED How Did I Get Glutened!?!
GFinDC replied to CanineGluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Personally (IMHO-ing here) I don't see anything wrong with eating just once a day myself. As long as you are eating healthy foods for your body, and not a bunch of junk or gluten. But eating only once a day will not cure celiac or prevent gluten from harming you. The immune system is more like an elephant than a mouse, it will remember what you ate for... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Dating Sites?
GFinDC replied to alucard4545's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thinking about it another way, if there aren't any good celiac dating sites, that means that everyone with celiac is on a non-celiac dating site. If they are on a dating site that is. And for exactly that reason, they couldn't find a good celiac specific site. So your search on a regular dating site may work better than expected. Just a thot. -
Hi, Divorce is no fun. I understand if he is depressed because of it. Some diabetics do follow a low-carb diet, which almost amounts to no carbs in some cases. They stick to meats and nuts and non-starchy vegetables. With maybe a small amount of carbs as a "treat" occasionally. This diabetes forum link may help him. There is a chat option at the...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Daughter, Frequent Stomach Pain
GFinDC replied to Barganzs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
HI, Celiacs react to wheat, rye, barley and some of us also react to oats. It only takes a miniscule amount of gluten to cause a reaction. So sharing peanut butter jars or butter, jam, mayo etc are enough to make us react. Crumbs from a knife used on regular bread and then stuck back in a jar of peanut butter will make us sick. Crumbs from a shared... -

I forgot one other thing. Betaine HCL is a pill you take before eating, It turns to hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It can help with digestion also, especially if your stomach acid is low for some reason. -
ARCHIVED Headed In Right Direction?
GFinDC replied to Melindy09's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@Melindy, Hi, you should not assume a negative test means you don't have celiac disease. The tests can only show a positive (the presence of antibodies). They can't show a negative, the absence of celiac disease. And the tests are looking for antibodies in your blood stream, when they are mostly concentrated in your gut. Some of the tests are up to... -
ARCHIVED How Did I Get Glutened!?!
GFinDC replied to CanineGluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I get glutened I usually am backed up for a day or 2 and then get diahrea. You may have reacted similarly? Celiac is an autoimmune condition and the antibodies turn on quickly but don't turn off quickly. You could have an immune reaction go on for a couple of weeks or more after a glutening. Your body wants to keep you safe and it does that by fighting... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Either Of These 2 Symptoms
GFinDC replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jane, I used to have abdominal pain, but mine was more constant than episodic. Digestive enzymes come in 2 varieties, vegetable and animal. The vergetable versions use natural plant enzymes like papain from pineapple to assist with digesting foods you eat. The animal forms use enzymes for animals like ox bile. Both kinds can help. Raw foods have... -
Welcome to the site Holly (MrsMuffin), There are some other people on the forum who don't have symptoms also. Most likley your doctor found it before symptoms developed. But there is a chance you will notice things improving as you go that you didn't realize were symptoms also. It might be a good idea to write down what you eat each day and how...

Some ideas in the meal threads below. There is also a recipe section of the forum with a couple recipes. A couple of thousand that is. When you go gluten-free it might be a good idea to stop all dairy for a while. Also stop all sugar and caffeine and alcohol and soy. And processed foods. Cook all your foods at home from whole ingredients. Leave... -

GFinDC replied to n1c0le's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are welcome. Another thing the doctor could check for you is your vitamin and mineral levels. If you are low on some of them that should be considered in the celiac determination. -

Results can take a couple weeks. It might go faster sometimes. Your doc should be able to tell you when they expect the results from the lab. Hashimoto's thryroiditis is an autoimmune disease also. The antibodies attack the thyroid. Hashimoto's is more common in celiacs, and more frequent in women. -

ARCHIVED Headed In Right Direction?
GFinDC replied to Melindy09's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome to the site. You could get the celiac blood antibody testing done. The standard tests are the blood antibodies and then the endoscopy to take biopsy samples from the small intestine. They check the biopsy samples for evidence of damage under a microscope. You could also try the gluten-free diet and see if it makes any difference. ... -

GFinDC replied to MrsAcE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can find a different doctor right? I suppose he at least checked your thyroid levels and tested for Hashimoto's too? Weight gain is associated with low thryoid levels and can be a symptom of celiac also. If you have celiac eventually you would probably start losing weight when your gut is too damaged to absorb food, but you might die getting there... -

It is a good thread for sure. IH did a great job on it too! I point people to it also. Re: the C issue and probiotics, the answer is probably not, at least usually. The thing is some probiotics have diary in them and if you react to dairy they could cause a problem because of the dairy content. But if you don't have a problem with diary then you shouldn...
