ARCHIVED Newly Dx'ed, Perhaps, But Not New To Auto Immunes...
GFinDC replied to jtolpin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jason, Nope, it's not an allergy reaction on the dairy. A RAST test will not detect it. RAST is looking at IgE immune reactions only. There are other kinds of immune cell reactions that it does not detect, IgA, IgG, TTG. The IgE immune reaction is the cause of allergy type symptoms, red eyes, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling face, sneezing... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy While On gluten-free Diet?!
GFinDC replied to Teriw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are right, doing the biopsy that long after going gluten-free is a waste of your money and time. If your symptoms have improved that is. -
(((Hugs Adleaide!))) Well, shoot, sounds like some more diet adjustment but at least you have practice with that stuff. Wondering if it is the cucumbers or the pickles? Maybe you could make cucumber chips in the oven to use them? And maybe we can find a good carob source for you that is gluten-free. It may not be the exact same taste but it works...

ARCHIVED Newbie Question
GFinDC replied to jabaar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Dugudugu, welcome to our little corner of the web! You may not test positive for celiac, but many people here didn't test positive and yet improved greatly after going gluten-free. The celiac tests are not perfect, although positive tests are almost always right, the negatives results have a poor accuracy. One term used for people who have problems... -
Welcome sorairobara, it's good to see new faces! HI Kaitlyn! Welcome also. Yep, we ate around, we just don't stick out real well in a crowd after going gluten-free anyway. Since you are both new, I'll share some threads that many people like for info and stuff like that. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get...

ARCHIVED Newly Dx'ed, Perhaps, But Not New To Auto Immunes...
GFinDC replied to jtolpin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jason, The next step is to hang out on this forum and ask questions and read, read, read! Endscopy at this point would be quite an ordeal for her to go through with needing to eat gluten for 2 or 3 months and damage her insides enough to be seen. I wouldn't do that to a kid myself. The big payoff for having an "official" gold standard biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Gastroenterologist Said Something Confusing Yesterday..
GFinDC replied to amberlink09's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Amberlink, Some of us develop additional food intolerances after going gluten-free. Lactose, casein, nightshades, soy, etc etc can all cause GI and other symptoms. So that's something to check on. There aren't manyhtest for food intolerances though, an elimination diet is the way to go. -
ARCHIVED Newly "diagnosed" And Can't Take The Severe Abdominal Pain!
GFinDC replied to brookevale's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Brookvale, I am sorry you are having health issues still. One thing to remember is that people can have more than one health issue going on at the same time. So, just because the doctor says there is a pancreatic duct issue doesn't mean celiac has gone away. You did say in your original post that you had symptoms improve after going gluten-free right... -
ARCHIVED Degrees Of Celiac?
GFinDC replied to nst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI NST, Here are some more threads with info. Celiacs have to avoid wheat, rye and barley. They all have very similar proteins in them and all cause reactions. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet. Don't eat in restaurants Eat only whole foods not processed foods... -
ARCHIVED Degrees Of Celiac?
GFinDC replied to nst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, no degrees of celiac, it is an autoimmune disease, and the immune system is not very forgiving to enemies. There are cases where people have no GI symptoms, and they are called silent celiacs. But that doesn't mean the damage isn't being done. Symptoms for celiac can be all over the board, in any organ of the body, not just the gut. That's one... -

ARCHIVED I Attended My First Support Group Meeting.
GFinDC replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmm, well it was nice to get out of the house for awhile? And that big gluten-free cake they made for you while you were gone sure must have hit the spot. And those homemade gluten-free cookies, yum-yum! Sorry it wasn't a little more meeting-ey. Around here, one of the local groups meets at a Whole Foods sometimes. Whole Foods is very supportive... -
The corn bread probably has wheat flour in it if it was a mix? Ah well, something to watch out for later. Quite a few people do end up without a formal diagnosis. The testing process just isn't really perfected yet. We still don't have the Star Trek tricorder available. May never for that matter.

ARCHIVED My Doctor Is Being A Pain
GFinDC replied to FinlandGrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like you may have DH (dermatitis herpetiformis), the skin condition associated with celiac disease. They can biopsy the skin next the lesion to check it for gliaden antibodies. I think you need to have an active reaction going on for that. A gastroenterologist is a specialist in conditions of the digestive system and would be a better choice... -
ARCHIVED New Celiac, Healing But Still Having Symptoms.
GFinDC replied to alwaysafter8's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Your progress sounds pretty normal to me. It isn't a quick fix diet for us, there is damage to heal in our gut and that takes time to heal. Plus the changes in diet take a while for our bodies to adjust to. It seems to me that we do react to many foods at first not so much because they are a particular problem for us but because our GI systems... -

Now that wuz kewl! -
Well, I hope you get a clear result. If it is positive you are all set, stay gluten-free. If it is negative, you otter stay gluten-free anyhow since the false results are not always right. You can always do a gluten challenge after a month or two and see what happens. But since you are feeling better without gluten it is best to avoid it IMHO.

Sounds like a smart doc to refer you here! There are not many food intolerance tests available. Food allergies are different and the do have tests for them. Skin prick testing is probably the most reliable for food allergies. Food intolerances they can test for are lactose intolerance and fructose intolerance. Maybe there are more but I haven't heard...

ARCHIVED Starting To Feel Down :(
GFinDC replied to Lfrost's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You've probably seen this list of threads b4, but just in case here it is again. At first I made big piles of rice every weekend with different combos of veggies and meat. Froze most of it and then nuked it when hungry. Do a different version every weekend and pretty soon your freezer will be full of various choices that can be reheated quickly. Some... -
ARCHIVED Shocked At Endoscopy Results
GFinDC replied to CathleenAnna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Cathleen, The linoleum cases are 30% more likely to.. ok making it up, better stop now! We are all different of course, so healing can vary. There are several members who report having no symptoms before diagnosis though. Silent celiac is the term for that. Some research shows healing can take up to 18 months. But many or most people here... -
