  1. Congrats on finding your way through the food jungle Maria. Sometimes an elimination diet can help with that. It really is kind of interesting how one person will react to one food and another will not at all. Seems we are just beginning to really learn about those reactions. Not that they are understood, but at least people now acknowledge they exist...
  2. Here are a few more threads to get you started. Meat and veggies is a good way to go when starting out. Avoiding potatoes would be a good idea though since he probably wants to go low carb for a while. This diabetes forum has good info and a chat feature which is nice. They have some long time diabetics on the chat that are real nice and give great...
  3. An elimination diet is pretty simple really. You don't need to read a lot of theories about it or prescribed foods to eat etc. Just pick out 5 foods that you don't think will bother you and eat only those foods. After 2 weeks if you feel better then you are most likely ok with those foods. So pick out one additional food to add to your diet, again something...
  4. Welcome Tisbzy! hi right back at cha! Welcome to you too Kristen! New is good, all nice and shiny like! Here are a few links to get you started on your reading: FAQ Celiac com http://www.celiac.co...celiac-disease/ Newbie Info 101 http://www.celiac.co...ewbie-info-101/ What's For Breakfast Today? https://www.celiac...
  5. I had a big improvement in my hay fever symptoms after going gluten-free. I used to avoid going outdoors because of the pollen. Now I don't buy a couple of Benedryl packets every time I go to the store. It's been quite a while since I took a Benedryl, and the last time was to test if it helped glutening reactions. Answer, not sure.
  6. Hmm, ok, what about vampires then? Would our blood kill vampires?
  7. I wonder if there is any chance of people becoming celiac by using our blood? We would have the trained antibodies to gluten in our blood, and it seems like it would not be impossible for those to influence a persons own antibodies in the celiac direction. Just curious if anyone has heard or read anything about this. Could we spread celiac through blood...
  8. Oh Oh , get a towel! Aka Ford Fairlane in Hitchhikers Guide. Hi Tom, Going gluten-free causes a lot of changes in GI system. Bacteria strains change, things start healing and enzymes that were missing may start reappearing. Lots of change can equal some distress. A simple diet with no processed foods and no or low sugar can help heal your...
  9. Welcome to the site Jeff! I am sorry your wife is so sensitive. Hopefully she will get better in time. For me I was very sensitive until I eliminated some additional food intolerances that I developed. I seemed to react to most anything. But things have settled down a lot since then. I think when our GI system is reacting to anything on an ongoing basis...
  10. Well, you are eating a lot of nightshades. The common food nightshades are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant. Udi's bread has potato in it. Most gluten-free baked items have potato. You might try eliminating all nightshades for a while and see if it helps. Another thing to check is soy. How many of your foods have soy in them? Eliminate both...
  11. Hi Victoria, Did your doc do the celiac antibody panel for you? The antibodies are one of the 2 standard tests. An endoscopy can only see for about 5 feet of the small intestine, so if you had damage at 5 and 1/2 feet they wouldn't see it. The antibody tests are not 100% reliable just like the endoscopy isn't 100% reliable. But the antibody tests...
  12. It seems to me doctors don't push gluten-free to Crohns' patients because it doesn't help all of them. They suggest a low residue diet instead, white bread? Seems daffy to me as a celiac but lots of Crohns patients are told diet has no relation. And it doesn't help them all, it is not like celiac where it is a definite known thing. In fact, celiac is...
  13. Make sure the lactaid tablets are gluten-free. Not all of them are.
  14. Hi Pauliwog is right, gluten-free is not a weight loss diet. It is a medical diet to prevent damage to your body. You may end up losing or gaining weight for a while. People sometimes enter a period of intense hunger after going gluten-free. The way to deal with that is to eat protein with every meal, and cut down on carbs, starches and sugars. But you...
  15. Great info Takala, thanks for that! I wonder if they tested him for vitamin/mineral deficiencies? That could be a sign of malabsorbtion if he has any. Which might point to some form of gut damage. Another thread on topic.
  16. Hi, Sounds like a rough time or all of you. Has he been tested for Crohn's and Uc (ulcerative colitis) ? Those are both conditions that could affect the colon. Celiac mostly affects the small intestine. There is a chance of course that he has both celiac and Crhon's or UC. There is a heightened chance of Crohn's for people with celiac disease. The...
  17. Good for you for trying to help your friend. The Crohn's Forum is a good site for info. Some people with Crohn's do feel better on a gluten-free diet. Others don't report feeling any better at all. So it is not a sure thing that it will help her. It seems there is no way to tell if it will help except to try the the gluten-free diet though. There...
  18. Hey, I don't use my microwave either! Darn thing is broke . But I would use it ifn' it twern't broke. You are still adjusting to living gluten-free. That is not something that happens overnight for most people. It's a process, just like adjusting to anything is. Of course it would be easier if you felt well physically. That's where changing your...
  19. Thanks Skylark, very interesting stuff! Might explain a few mild reactions for me. Guess we are still learning every day.
  20. Hi Rampage, I was just thinking of another thing that might be bothering you besides flowers, sunshine, and singing birds. Hyper thyroid symptoms could include anger and irritability and insomnia also. There is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto's thyroiditis where the immune system attacks the thyroid. People with celiac get Hashi's sometimes...
  21. I may have mis-understood, but I think Rev is talking about other food intolerances besides gluten? Things like dairy, soy or nightshades etc. Rev, The reason why you are doing this doesn't really matter. You know the answer is to stop. So that's what you have to do, regardless of the "reason" you are doing it. There is some good reason to trial...

    ARCHIVED Week One

Yep, reading labels is a pain. I prefer whole foods. They have labels like "chicken" or "green beans" or "peanuts". Nothing much else, except sometimes frozen things will have salt or water added. Most groceries keep their gluten-free baked items in a freezer section, and many of them use a green tag for gluten-free in the USA. Some of them keep room...
  23. I used to make the Betty Crocker gluten-free cake mixes and I would add a smashed up banana to the mix. Makes it a little moister. It's nice they have these things now!
  24. well, some things that might help. Let's see, sub-lingual B-12, dissolves under the tongue and is absorbed in the mouth. So you get some even if you aren't absorbing nutrients well in your GI tract. Sunshine for Vitamin D. Some people get B-12 injections and other nutrients. Basically, vitamin shots. Gluten can affect the brain, so it...
  25. Rice is kind of small and oblong while mini-wheats is rectangular. Maybe you can only eat rectangular wheat? OK, I got nothing! Open Original Shared Link Mini-wheats original flavor: Ingredients: Whole grain wheat, sugar, contains 2% or less of brown rice syrup, gelatin, BHT for...
