  1. The biopsy isn't perfect, like many things in life. If your sister has celiac, then they may have missed it by doing a biopsy of a healthy spot vs a non-healthy spot. Not everyone in a family will develop active celiac disease. What I read was about 10% of first degree relatives will get it. The disease was only identified after WW-2, so people before...
  2. Hi Dee, (CampingGirl08), Your story sounds sorts like mine. I was lactose intolerant for many years before I found out my real problem was gluten. I have a hard time sleeping if I eat dairy. Stick around, there is plenty to learn here.
  3. Sorry to hear that Mayfaire! I see on this link that they recommend rinsing it first before cooking. Seems there is a coating on the outside that can have a bad flavor. I haven't noticed it myself, but maybe the kind you bought had more need of rinsing than mine. They also say the red kind has a better flavor, although I've only done the white kind myself...
  4. I don't know what my D level is, but my doc did put me on a 1000 units each day (above the 800 I was already taking) after my last blood test. Hey aren't them twins 'sposed to think alike or something? Does brother have any GI sypmptoms? Maybe it's time for him to consider how he got to such a low D level in the first place. Taking supplements is fine...
  5. Hi Ben, You may still be getting a small amount of gluten in your diet or meds too. Spices are another area people need to be careful about. There are so many food products with added gluten. Some people have reactions to other foods also, like corn, soy, eggs, etc... So you may want to look into that. You may benefit from taking some pro-biotics...
  6. Hi Ruthie, I think I have read that in England the Govt reimburses people for the costs of special gluten-free foods there, if they have a diagnosis. So if by chance that's where you are that could be a reason to consider the biopsy. Although I am not sure that's a requirement for it. The blood tests are supposed to be pretty reliable for positive results...
  7. Hi Ruthie, I hope you feel better soon! I don't eat out at restaraunts very often anymore. The last time was at New years when I was visiting family out of state. Really it is a crap shoot eating out at any restaraunt. The ones that have dedicated gluten-free menus are probably a good bet, but any others are not. Unless the staff is trained on how...
  8. I had lactose intolerance for 10 years and thought that was my problem, although I knew there was something else too but wasn't aware of celiac. Lactaid just didn't seem to work anymore and I had reactions to even the tiny amounts of dairy in a slice of bread. Or the little bits of dairy in a few cookies. I took lots of lactaid but couldn't handle even...
  9. I used to get almost constant sinus infections and ear pressure before going gluten-free. I always blamed that on hayfever before but I think gluten was the real cause of both my infections and balance probs. I've had some more recent episodes of starting to pass out that have cleared up. I blame those on my thyroid cyst that I think was compressing my...
  10. If the rice is working for you sounds like you are making progress! I really like quinoa as an alternative, ir has better protein in it than rice. How about soups? Can you do homemade soups like pea soup or lentil soup yet? If you keep a list as you go of the foods you can eat, that would be helpful. Since you are on a pretty restricted diet, you can...
  11. Tinkyada rice pastas is good. Deboles corn macaronis is glue glop when cooked. At least for me the one time I tried it. I have heard the Deboles rice pasta is good though. I don't eat bread anymore but I liked Kinickinick bread when I did try it once.
  12. It was a big adjustment for me, learning to eat differently. And pay attention to what I Was eating vs just grabbing something quick. No more Marie Calendar's turkey pot pies! No more frozen TV dinners with a beer on Friday night! No more cookies for breakfast! Well that wasn't a great idea anyway. It gets lots easier, at least it did for me. All those...
  13. My doc said my nodule was too small to biopsy at the moment. I guess that's a good thing. I hope to avoid the surgery, but if that's the way it ends up I guess I will be taking the thyroid meds too. I'd like to get them to leave some of the thyroid, but the docs are resistant to that idea for some reason. I think they have a big thyroid collecting hobby...
  14. I had lots of back steps (notice I didn't call them flub-ups) when I started and some not that long ago too. I ended up getting past most of the accidental glutenings when I started doing all my own cooking. Many times I would end up dropping back to a very simple rice and veggie diet for a few days to try and get past the flub-ups. Oops! I said it! ...
  15. Hi Jason, Maybe this link to info about gastroparesis will help. Seems there is a link between gastroparesis and thyroid levels. I saw in one of your other threads that your doc thinks your thyroid levels are low The link talks about the vagus nerve and stomach emptying and gut motility. Open Original Shared Link
  16. Since it is happening in the shower, could it be related to the shampoo or soaps you are using? Maybe you are using different shampoos / soaps since moving back there vs when you were in your other place? Try reaching deep and feeling the source of the problem grasshopper! :-)
  17. Hi Boywonder, I don't know much about DH myself. But this thread in the DH area might help you identify it. CuriousGeorge posted some pics of DH in it. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...mp;#entry510306
  18. Hi Nicole, I had lactose intolerance for 10 years and cut it out for the most part. I was able to re-introduce it as far as not having bad digestive symptoms after a year gluten-free. Still needed a little lactaid though. But I had to stop dairy again due to not being able to sleep when I ate it. I think you could get answers all over the map on this...
  19. Hi Debmidge, I have both a cyst and a nodule. The cyst is on the buttterfly body of the thyroid (isthmus), right in front of the throat where the adam's apple is. I also have a calcified nodule. The alcohol treatment is for the cyst only, not the nodule. At least that's my understanding. I've had MRI with contrast a couple times and am beginning to...
  20. Hi Lovey, My endo says my thyroid levels are fine as of my most recent tests 5 months ago. So maybe I am ok there. I am not on the candida diet although my sister had a book on it and I read through it some. I am feeling a lot betterr since going on a home made diet of mostly rice, quinoa, veggies, fruit and dead critters. I don't do dairy or wine...
  21. Hi Lovey25,

I am not sure I have Hashimoto's now. At my most recent visit to the endo he said all my numbers / levels are ok!

    Thanks for dropping by!

  22. Hi Anthony, When starting the gluten-free diet it is simpler to not eat any processed foods. Making all your foods from scratch yourself is a good way to know you are avoiding gluten. That way you don't need to spend all your time reading labels too. There are a lots of threads here about what to eat etc and lots of recipes too. Keep going because...
  23. Hmmm, maybe the Rabbis could do the gluten-free inspections also eh? That would be cool. I sometimes look for Kosher foods since some of them are made wheat free for Passover. Like potato pancake mix, or coconut macaroons. Manachevitza makes some awesome coconut macaroons! I don't think there is an actual regulation in the USA for gluten free labeling...
  24. You have Hashimoto's? Me too. :(

But you're a rarity -- not many men have the disease.

    :)

  25. Sounds like a fun time on the water UnhappyC! I had sinus infections on and off for years before going gluten-free, and often had loss of balance. Most of that cleared up for me after I had been gluten-free a while and learned how to avoid the stuff. I had another round of losing balance recently but it was due to high blood pressure meds HCTZ (hydroclorathiazide...
