  1. 1.) Since he lost weight even after eating 98% gluten-free foods for a month, could there be a different issue here? Certainly it could be a different problem. For one he hasn't been diagnosed with celiac. For another he hasn't followed the diet strictly for long enough to see a good result. Cheating every couple weeks is not even going to do it. He...
  2. Sounds like you are one of the silent celiac cases. Latent Celiac Link on Celiac.com If you elevated antibodies that doesn't sound good does it? It really seems like a big risk to take, considering you have a choice now but later on it may be too late to prevent another autoimmune disease from affecting you. There is a long list of associated autoimmune...
  3. Hi Storm and Nikki, Welcome to the board and the gluten-free life! I found that it much simpler to start out by not buying much processed food, saves a lot of time reading labels. You can buy rice or quinoa or buckwheat or amaranth or teff or corn and use them. Usually not a problem except sometimes if you buy from bulk bins there is a risk of cc. ...
  4. I tried askapatient but got no hits on it. There seems to be another spelling out there as afobazol, with zol instead of sol at the end. Sounds like the same drug, not sure though. Sorry to hear about the divorce Ravenwood. Maybe a mediator could help smooth things out? It seems to me a mediator is easier to talk to than a lawyer or a judge. My last...
  5. I take DPP-iv for minor cc only. I wouldn't suggest anyone use it to intentionally eat gluten though. It seems to help me some and that is a good thing IMHO. I have tried using DPP-iv for casein digestion and it doesn't seem to help me much or any with casein.
  6. Hi EMS1984, I am lactose intolerant and casein intolerant, so I can give you a little info on them. Lactose is the sugar in dairy, and casein is the protein. Lactose intolerance generally means your body doesn't produce the enzyme to digest the lactose sugar. So it goes through you intestine and and makes lots of bacterias very happy. Those bacteria...
  7. Hi Lainey, I take Solgar brand vegetarian digestive enzymes. They don't have any wheat, dairy or yeast. They help to break down foods into more absorable form. Many plants have enzymes in them naturally that will digest them. That's why fruits etc often go bad so quickly, the enzymes in them are digesting them. I also take DPP-iv to help with minor...
  8. I sometimes get some pain from seeing young women in tight fitting clothes myself. Ok, just kidding! I had gas and bloating a lot before going gluten-free and afterwards for several months. It hasn't completely gone away but it is much better. I just have to be careful to avoid my triggers, gluten, sulfites, and dairy. I do take pro-biotics sometimes...
  9. Hi Suprmom, It doesn't sound like you are off your rocker. You know how your body feels and reacts much better than a doctor or anyone else can. You probably already know that lactose intolerance often goes along with celiac due to the villi damage in the small intestine. It seems like you doc is saying it doesn't matter about your son's possible...

    ARCHIVED Sore Gut

Hi Magpie, I've had the feeling of being full after just a bite of food also. It seems to me it is caused by gas in the stomach (in my case anyhow). Sometimes I have this problem if I eat too much sweet stuff, or get a little dairy by mistake, or sulfites, or of course gluten does it too. I usually take some pro-biotics and or some digestive enzymes...
  11. It seems to me that people use more processed foods these days than they used to Matt. Maybe your mom is using more whole foods in her cooking than your school does. That is a good way to avoid gluten, using whole foods rather than processed. Wheat is used a lot in foods these days for various things, like keeping salad dressings in emulsions, adding cheap...
  12. Nuts sometimes have wheat or other things added as part of the coating on them that holds flavors. You can make your own flavored nuts by putting some plain nuts in a container with a little olive oil, plus some spices and shaking it up real good. Salt and garlic powder are nice. You can also roast them in an oven for a little bit or in a pan on the stove...
  13. The way I have read it, the endoscopy for celiac is done to take 4 or 5 samples of tissue from different areas of the intestine. The reason they would take multiple samples is that the villi damage can be patchy, and a single sample may miss it. I have read several times on the board that people have had endoscopies and the GI only took 1 sample or 2. ...
  14. Hi, Bloating and gas are part of digestion normally, so a little is to be expected. Remember the movie blazing saddles? Well, that was a little extreme I guess. Anyhow, it seems to me that we go through an adjustment period when starting the gluten-free diet. Your foods are changing quite bit from what they were, and the change could...
  15. Hi GlutenWrangler, Nice to see you around the boards! 2 years without eating is quite a while for sure. I don't know much about that EG thing. Seems like a food intolerance caused condition though. Boy, just think of all the wear and tear you are saving on your teeth!
  16. Thanks much for the recipe Lonewolf! I made a version of this recipe using Tom Sawyer flour. I kind of winged it on the measurements, not really measuring. My first try didn't really rise. But the 2nd time I added just a couple drops of lemon juice and it rose just fine. I made the batter/dough somewhat thicker than pancake batter, put it in a pan...
  17. You might want to read up on hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid. People with celiac sometimes get it, I have thyroid nodules and a cyst myself. There are several other people on the board with hashimoto's and some with Graves disease, an overactive thyroid condition..
  18. Seems to me a good thing to put on the poster would be a list of some associated conditions. I think the list below should also include schizophrenia, depression, neuropathy, lactose intolerance, sleep disorders, lupus, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, thyroiditis, and dermatitis herpetiformis. From the NDDIC site Open Original Shared Link People with celiac...
  19. I drink mostly tea and water. I have had a few Woodchuck brand hard ciders at the bar before. I can do tater vodka, Luksusowa is one. It is much easier to chew than whole potatoes.
  20. The M+Ms probably have dairy in them, which could be a problem for you. Lactose intolerance seems to be common among celiacs. For that matter it is not uncommon among non-celiacs. The blood antibody tests are not 100% accurate, with some false negatives (about 30%) possible on some tests. There is an article on the main site here about testing. www.celiac...
  21. Sounds like you have been watching too many fast food commercials with sublingual (subliminal) messages. I don't know, standing in a long line at the burger joint, or waiting in the car line at the drive thru with the exhaust fumes to whet my appetite isn't really getting me going. And doing that 2 or 3 times in a day is not appealing. I kind of like...
  22. It's hard to udnerstand their thinking for me. Biopsy proven celiac means damage was seen in the intestinal villi. It seems like they are saying it is ok to damage your body as long as it doens't hurt. Sounds wacky to me.
  23. The time it takes to heal seems to vary quite a bit. It might help to consider some vitamin supplements like, A, D, E, and K. plus liquid B-12 (sublingual). If she has intestinal damage she is probably not absorbing her vitamins well. Some people add more protein to their diets after going gluten-free also. Some people say that glutamine may help in...
  24. I think they call that gastroparesis. It is a condition some people with celiac get, and could be caused by nerve damage due to malabsorption of vitamins. Here is some info from the NIDDK below. ************************************************************************* The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts...
  25. Some of us also react to casein, the protein in dairy I am one of those who can't sleep after eating dairy. So, just another thing to keep in mind in case the kiddo has the same reaction..
