  1. Some grocery stores around DC will deliver food to homes. You might check with some of the grocery chains in the area and see if they have a delivery service for home bound customers. That might be helpful if run out of something or need additional items. There are also services for home bound people to deliver foods, like Meals on Wheels program. They...
  2. I didn't seem to get poison ivy either, even when my older brother got it being in the same areas. I think it is important to wash your clothes after being exposed, and maybe get new gloves too. My understanding is it is an oil that can spread and be carried on clothing or pets fur too. When we were kids our hand me down treatment was to crush osage...
  3. Sometimes doctors tell people they have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), or gluten intolerance. I think the idea being that they are are not (in theory) having intestinal damage, but are having some kind of digestion problem when eating gluten. So, yes, celiac is no the only thing out there. I imagine there are really tons more people told they have IBS...
  4. Hi Storm, I been there, it takes a while to adjust. I think part of it is being programmed to eat certain things all your life, and then suddenly having to learn to think about different things to eat. Sort of like changing a life long habit. Eating suddenly becomes something requiring effort, just to decide what's ok to eat. But once you get past...
  5. First off, yes, I'd suggest no alcohol while doing your elimination diet. You are trying to give your body's digestive system a chance to heal, and the less of strain you put on it the better. Alcohol can cause gluten reactions also depending on the source. Some people react to grain derived alcohols, others don't. Some people react to yeast or sulfites...
  6. There is a home test kit in Canada called Biocard. It is Canada only though.
  7. I am purty sure I read that floating is sometimes related to either undigested fats/oils or lifejackets. Come to think of it, it was the fats/oils that were talked about. And I think I read also that floaters are a symptom that happens to celiacs also. But it could be due to anything that causes fats/oils not to digest properly too. Remember the big...
  8. Hi, This article might help with the tests. https://www.celiac.com/articles/57/1/Interp...ults/Page1.html
  9. Hi GWMAW, There are tons of varying symptoms for celiac disease. It seems to affect different people in different ways. But, constipation and diarrhea are some common ones posted here. Nausea and sweating are not uncommon either. I used to start sweating during my sleep. And my stomach has often let me know it didn't like me eating gluten. Have...
  10. Hi George, There are some antibody blood tests that don't work if you are off gluten for very long.. They are best done when you still on gluten. If you want to do those your doc just needs to draw some blood and send it to a lab for testing. There are some other conditions that can cause villi blunting, so the antibody tests are not a bad idea, just...
  11. You can find out what is bothering you by doing an elimination diet. Eat very simply for 3 or 4 days,. Choose a group of foods you don't think will bother you. Eat just those foods. Then add a new "test" food. If you are ok after a couple days add another test food. And so on. Make a list of your safe foods. For me that would be rice, veggies, eggs...
  12. I saw something on the tube about a web site where people commit to losing weight, stopping smoking, or some other goal, and they pay so much money a into a fund each week. Then if they meet their goal they get the money back. Not sure what the name of the site is though. The idea was that if you don't stick to your goal then you lose the money you committed...
  13. Hi Peggy, An elimination diet should help you figure out your intolerances, as long as they result in symptoms you recognize.
  14. You might find these 2 links to Youtube videos from the Discovery Health TV program Mystery Diagnosis relevant. They talk about a boy who had seizures as an infant and was found to be celiac. His seizures stopped after going on the gluten-free diet. Part 1 Mystery Diagnosis Celiac Open Original Shared Link Part 2 Mystery Diagnosis Celiac Open...
  15. Well, the genetic tests are ok to do, but they won;' tell you if you have celiac disease. just that you could develop it at some point. Open Original Shared Link There is a test called BioCard test available in Canada for $50 bucks that might work. If you could get hold of it that is. There is also a saliva test that may be available soon....
  16. Hi there Taypaul, You'll probably see this advice again and again if you browse through the threads on the forum. Basically a good way to start the diet is to stick with simple home made foods. Rice and veggies and some kind of meat are good. Post makes gluten-free corn Chex now. Eggs are usually ok for breakfast too. Some of us have to give up dairy...
  17. Hi Woolygimp, You could probably put what I know about Sjogren's in a thimble, and have room to spare. What's that old saying "fools rush in"? Well, first off it seems to me you have a fairly good idea there, seeing how you felt better after the surgery (as related to the dryness). Going off for an IV might not get you the answer though. From...
  18. I don't know if this will help any, but this MedNet page lists some conditions associated with electrolyte imbalances. Open Original Shared Link Since the Gatorade seems to help, it seems like i tmight be something throwing the electrolyte balance off in the body? Here is their list. * Low Blood Pressure * Congestive Heart Failure ...
  19. Sounds like maybe a troll is living in your tummie! Kidding! I have had plenty of sounds effects in the past. I think tarnalberry has it right, double check everything you ate that day. And consider things besides gluten also. Dairy can cause lots of activity down there too, could it be a dairy troll! I see a lot of people posting with other...

  21. Hi Matt, Welcome! Yes I had pain for years in my abdomen, left side. Doc couldn't explain it of course. Said everything was fine. Anyway, my pain eventually went away after going gluten-free. It took months but it did go away. I only get it now if I make a mistake and eat gluten in something. I think the best way to start the gluten-free diet...
  22. I didn't know there was a relation between diabetes and B-12 deficiency. She said people with diabetes tend to have lower B-12 over time. Thanks for posting, very interesting.
  23. When first starting the diet, your gut will be healing (if you can stay off the gluten) and that can be a little rough period. I had gut spasms for the first month or so after going gluten-free. It is a big change and your body needs to adjust. As you go along if you are careful about what you eat you can learn things that cause a reaction. Easting out...
  24. Hi Lainey and Gotterski, I take Biocor brand DPP-iv myself. There are other brands available though. I take it if I try something new for the first time, and am not sure about it, even if it says it is gluten-free. If I was to eat out, which is very seldom these days, I'd take it also. I don't think it is a cure-all, it just seems to help some when...
  25. Hi Brianna, Since you mentioned you get pain in your stomach area after eating, I wonder if it might be H. Pylori? H.Pylori can cause ulcers, but it is treatable. Just a thought. Another thing to look into is goitrogenic foods. If your thyroid levels are low, you might want to avoid foods that are considered goitrogenic, or thyroid hormone lowering...
