  1. Hi Jason, I suggest you get some DPP- 4 or DPP-IV enzyme. It won't make you able to eat gluten on purpose. But it may help with minor cc issues. And some Pepto Bismol for the road too. I think you would do well to take at least one of these DPP-IV before you eat at any restaraunt or maybe a couple before eating. And then maybe take a few here and...
  2. Thanks for the coconut hint Fluffy. I don't hate coconut so that is another possibility. I am going to try and remember to pick up some iodine tincture and try the skin test sometime soon. If nothing else it is an interesting experiment to see how it goes. Self testing is something us celiacs seem to need to learn about.
  3. I suppose you have checked the ingredients list on the nuts you are eating? They could have some form of gluten added during processing, especially if they coated with something. Or they could be cc if processed on line that also processed gluten items. Casein is a protein in dairy. So most dairy product are likely to have some. I have a pretty strong...
  4. Hi Deanna, I did an elimination diet and found it very helpful. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to eliminate anything that you consume, including vitamin pills, sodas, coffee, tea, spices etc. Medications are also suspect.
  5. Hi FLuffy, I have to admit to feeling pretty foolish myself. When I first figured out I was hypothyroid I had been off salt for 5 years, and not taking a vit with iodine. One day I developed a thyroid cyst, and it grew and grew and turned out there was a giant at the top. Oops, wrong story that was Jack and the Beanstock! But it did get bigger...
  6. Hi ohsotired, I thought I'd give you a link to the thyroid supplement I have been taking. It really made a big difference for me. It's not super expenseive, so might be worth trying to see if it helps. Open Original Shared Link Natural Sources Raw Thyroid
  7. Hi RacerRex, If you do a google on "schizophrenia gluten" you will find lots of hits. Seems there is a connection is some cases, but not all by any means. I am not at all suggesting you have schizophrenia! I am just pointing out that there are some mental conditions that gluten is linked too. So, the way I figure it, if gluten can be linked to schizophrenia...
  8. I use a lot of Vitamin Shoppe supplements, and have been happy with them. I did have a problem with their "Especially for Man" multi-vit pills. They are yeast, wheat, salt, dairy, preservative, and coloring free. But they have oatstraw in them I think that is what was getting to me. I use their other product with no problem. Their is a brand called Pioneer...
  9. Echo on the bulk bins. Risky stuff. They have got me good before on things that are supposedly gluten-free like plain nuts. Same scoop used to load all the bulk bins equals contamination of all the items. Say they start by scooping the organic whole wheat flour into the first bin, and then scoop the peanuts into the next bin. You might be ok if you washed...
  10. Sounds like some real success stories here on the BP front. My BP was described as borderline high for years, but not terribly high. It seemed to stay around 130 over 89 or so. Going gluten-free didn't seem to change it at all after 2 years. I tried going salt free for 5 years prior to gluten-free and that didn't help either. I do use a little salt now...
  11. I make corn torillas rollups for breakfast sometimes. Pretty easy if you have some way to heat them for a few minutes so they are nice and soft and don't crack when rolled up. Rice Dream doesn't go well with me either. Or grain alcohols. Still got an almost full bottle of Viginia Gentelman whiskey sitting around here. Ouch. I think there was a breakfast...
  12. A lot depends on how well you do at being gluten-free too. It takes time to learn all the ways you can get gluten in your diet. The easy way to avoid it is to eat whole foods and cook them yourself. Everything you eat or drink needs to be considered as a possible source of gluten. I think there is often an adjustment period in the beginning. I think...
  13. Thanks for the link Fluffy. I could do more taters I guess, or cod. I was like you, after being off salt, you really notice the taste of it. Most of the time I Was off salt was pre-gluten-free, so I got plenty of it in regular processed foods anyway. Good to hear you are feeling better. I don't think it would hurt to consider the iodine still, just...
  14. Hi Fluffy, I was off all salt for 5 or 6 years something like that. I was feeling not so hot and still had high blood pressure, so I figured I'd try the salt again. I ate an apple with salt on it and began feeling better pretty quick. I think it was due to the iodine in the salt. I checked my vitamins and the ones I was taking didn't have idodine in...
  15. If you are really gluten free I don't think you would get symptoms. Some people say they have to avoid shampoos etc that have gluten ingredients also. Have you checked all your vitamins, medications, all the food you are eating and everything you are drinking? Two weeks in there is a good chance you are not really gluten free. That stuff can be hidden...
  16. I react to carrots, so maybe you do too?
  17. I was wondering how you were faring! Well a smaller lump sounds positive anyway. So did the doc order an ultrasound? That's what my doc did for my thyroid. The ultrasound is cheaper and a better option than an MRI per my doc. I hear you on the tired thing. My doctor said my thyroid tests were normal too. He also said he wouldn't prescribe thyroid hormones...
  18. Hi SkwurlyGurl, First off, I Love your screename! Hmm. I think I've met you before, perhaps many times in fact. Just kidding! Sounds like you know what the problem is already. If you really want a doctor opinion, ask for the celiac blood panel. Or try the Enterolab testing perhaps. There is also a Biocard test available in Canada.
  19. Hi Jennifer, Gluten sensitivity is not the same as celiac. There is plenty of room for damage to other body parts besides your gut though. Just because your gut isn't being obviously damaged, doesn't mean your joints, brain, nerves etc are out of harm's way. If you have Hashi's symptoms, it would be worthwhile getting some treatment. My doc hasn...
  20. Way to be subtle Jestgar! On the misinfo front, a while back I ate with family at an IHOP. My sister and I (she's celiac also) thought it would at least be worthwhile to ask for Van's gluten-free waffles on the off chance they might have them. I asked the young waiter and got a blank stare. He wisely went back to the manager to double check before...

ARCHIVED So I Saw The Gi Doc

Hi Luanne, The genetic testing is not going to prove you have celiac. They have various estimates, but it seems around 30% of the U.S.A. population has the genes for celiac. But only 1% develop the active disease. Another option might be Enterolabs testing. Enterolabs can't prove celiac either, but can show if you have gliaden antibodies in your gut...
  22. Hi, Sounds like you are having all kinds of fun! I have been feeling pretty lousy myself this year, and just about a week ago figured out that it is my low thyroid that is causing the problems. Since I have got some thyroid supplements I am feeling much better. My digestion has improved lots since then. So far this year I cut out carrots (which really...
  23. Hi Jocelyn, There are several threads of tips around the board. If I could remember the titles I'd post them for you. But anyway, Pepto Bismol can help with gut pain, DPP-IV can help a little, lots of water and rest, too.
  24. Hi Jocelyn, My ex little town in Ohio had a stop light and they took it out. Now all we have is stop signs and memories. Sylviann has some good advice for you. One thing I learned is to be selective about adding things to my diet. I tend to try new things one or 2 at a time. You mentioned swelling as a symptom? If you do a search on...
  25. Gluten Dairy lactose and casein (experimenting with it a little now though after 12 years) carrots coffee tea I avoid soy but don't have a reaction to it. I rarely add sugar to anything. Sulfites, I am still not positive about them. Hayfever, scratch tested positive to trees and grasses and kitty cats and woofie dogs. However my allergies are much...
