  1. Here is some info from Wiki on malabsorption issues. Maybe if you print out the Wiki article for your doc it would help. It is a fairly long article with lots of source reference. Open Original Shared Link Malabsorption-related The changes in the bowel make it less able to absorb nutrients, minerals and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.[4...
  2. Hi Swimmr, I think the official elimination diet rule is that they aren't followed on Thanksgiving. I believe that was in the Pilgrim's Handbook 101 or something? I can't find my copy right now to confirm but it sure sounds right! Seems like I have seen recipes for sweet potatoe pie around here. But then again, Thanksgiving only comes once...
  3. Hi Rossman, The time does vary for getting better. A lot of it depends on how well you eliminate gluten from your diet. A good way to start is to avoid processed foods and eat a simple whole foods diet. Rice and veggies, meats, basic single ingredient foods rather than factory produced foods. Some of us also have other food intolerances besides gluten...
  4. Well, if this links works, it will take you to the Betty Crocker Product Locator page. You put in your zip code and street, and then put gluten free in the search box. When I did this is came back with a list of their gluten-free baking mixes in yellow test at the bottom of the page. Then I clicked on the yellow text and it tool me to list of stores...
  5. Luigis' Italian Ice is an alternative to ice cream you could try.
  6. Celiac is an immune system response. Once the body learns to make antibodies to an antagonist it doesn't forget that response. If it did we would never be immune to any disease. So, you get a little germy visitor in your system and your body creates antibodies to attack it. It doesn't say, well maybe I won't bother because it's only a little bit of a...
  7. Neat video Jim. thanks for sharing your ride!
  8. Sounds like some Phillip's Milk of Magnesia might help. A bunch of sauerkraut might help also. Darn anti-biotics are a messing with ya Swimmrr!
  9. I have had hypo symptoms also. What I did was stick to a whole foods diet, take thyroid supplements, and get off coffee and tea. If you have Hashimoto's you can't expect to feel "normal" if you aren't strictly following the gluten-free diet.
  10. Yep, about time is right! Unfortunately, judging from this board, that is pretty much the usual story it seems. Years of mis-diagnosis and misguided treatments. Take some time and look around the forum here. Lots of good info around. You might want to go for a cook from scratch diet, with mostly whole foods instead of processed foods to start. It...
  11. You don't need fancy cookware to cook good food. A plain old pot or two and a skillet will do fine for rice and veggies and chicken and all kinds of things. The fancy stuff may make it a little easier or faster is all. It's still just food though. You can always add different tools later if you feel like it. I do suggest you get some plastic storage...
  12. I hear you on the eggs Swimmrr. Maybe they will work out. If you keep having symptoms you could always put them on the maybe list and try them again later. I don't know how the anti-biotics will affect your elim diet. Seems like they could confuse the results some. Even if they are gluten-free anti-biotics, they may affect your gut flora negatively and...
  13. Interesting stuff Fluffy. I always use one of the charcoal filter pitchers. Didn't know it wasn't good for flouride though. I started using a filter pitcher years ago because of high lead levels in the city water supply. Then later they had high bacteria levels and red water. Then later they started having houses that were only 5 years old springing...
  14. I just tried the yellow cake mix. First time I used the oven this year. Took me a while to get it working! It came out great. I used a 1/2 cup of olive oil instead of the 1/2 cup of butter. I added a handful of shredded coconut, some cinnamon, nutmeg, and a couple teaspoons of molasses. Baked it for 10 minutes extra at 350 degrees F. in a round 8 inch...
  15. Yeah, pretty durn neat. I was real surprised that he said almost 50% of the dry stool weight is bacteria. Mostly from the colon though, not the small intestine. That was near teh bottom of the page. He said there are more bacteria in the colon than there are cells in the human body too. Good thing they are small!
  16. Huh, sounds like you were willing to have her participate right? As long as they gave you a chance to review the recipes first. So it seems the school didn't follow through the way you expected by sharing the recipes before hand? I wonder why she brings it up also. Maybe it's that she wants to work it out somehow? Well, I am not at all critical about...
  17. Hi ya Swimmrr, How's the ear doing? I think I saw you were going to take some anti-biotics for it right? Seems like in our family all the kids had ear aches when young too. I think it was from our mother always yelling "what they H. E. double toothpicks are you doing? !*? Just kidding she wasn't like that at all. Back to floaters. Sounds like a...
  18. Hi Googles, You really don't need to spend a lot of money on gluten-free eating, or time for that matter. I tend to cook pretty simply. A lot of times I will make a large batch of rice and veggies on the weekend and freeze half of it. Next weekend make another large batch but a different version. After a few weeks of this you could have quite a variety...
  19. Good to hear you feel fine Swimmrr! : Well, an interesting day for sure. The idiots rule the highways don't they? Or seem to think they do. Sure would have been nice if the Tricare people had told you about the co-insurance issue before hand. So what's next for your diet? Have you tried rice yet? Rice would be a good thing because you mix...
  20. Hmmm, do you think your symptoms have improved then? If they have that's good. If they go backwards then you may have to look at the foods you started out with and the pills also. Have you been keeping a food/symptom log as you go Swimmrr? That might make it easier for you to see changes. Now, the idea also is if you run into a problem food, that...
  21. Taking a look from another angle. It seems to me the teacher meant well, even though she probably doesn't have a clue about cross contamination issues etc. She attempted to include the child in a school activity the other kids were doing, and spent her own money to try and make that happen. It would have made more sense for her to contact you first before...
  22. There is a drug called ursodiol that works in some cases. They use it for small cholesterol stones. There are pigment stones also and it doesn't work for them. Open Original Shared Link I found this info by searching for "gall bladder treatment".
  23. I found a page by John W. Kimball that explains the human digestive system. If you scroll down to the section on the small intestine it describes the villi and the enzymes produced there. Lactase is one of them. Pretty interesting stuff for folks like us. The villi produce the lactase and other enzymes. So if they are missing no lactase. Open Original...
  24. Well, come on, Friday is golf day right? Maybe they have some test results they are waiting on? Anyhow, maybe a good rest will do you good. I said a prayer for you too. Hang in there and take a little breather from the normal routine eh?
  25. Hi Swimmr, Are you sure one of the things you have been eating already is not a problem? You had about 20 things to start with right? I started with 2 things, apples and salt. Have you eliminated your vitamins and pills yet? Unless they are medically nessecary they should be eliminated also. And medicines should be researched to be sure they are gluten...
