ARCHIVED Nwbie Needs Help For Unexplained Gi Issues
GFinDC replied to katie may's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, Elimination diets are a great tool. They say that caprylic acid helps with candida also. It is found in coconut milk and can also be bought as a supplement. It can take some time to sort things out so don't feel bad if you make some mistakes along the way. Celiac is a lifelong condition so your time spent reading and learning about it can help... -
ARCHIVED Milk Protein Intolerance
GFinDC replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Casein is the milk protein tha some of us react to. The casein protein is supposed to be structured similarly to the gluten protein according to Wiki. That doesn't mean the reactions have to be the same as the reaction to gluten though. They seem to be quite variable from what I have read on the board. Some people get sleepy, others (myself) get... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Problems...need Advice
GFinDC replied to mygfworld's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for the links Roda! I found a small mention of calcium possibly interfering with thyroid medication absorption on the Mayo clinic site. Found this article on WebMD about the issue. From WebMD article: "Patients and their physicians need to be made aware that calcium can prevent the absorption of thyroxine" and this can be prevented by taking... -

I added my complaint also and voted thumbs up on the complaint posts. -
I use psyillium husks from Yerba Prima. It's a loose powder you can sprinkle in your food. It is made from the outer coating of seeds of the plantago plant. See the Wiki link for more info. It is in Metamucil also.

ARCHIVED Thyroid Problems...need Advice
GFinDC replied to mygfworld's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, I am not an expert on thyroid problems, although I have some myself. I have a couple nodules and a cyst. I really think I am hypothyroid due to some symptoms I have had. Like sore shoulder joints, which added in sore knee joint on the right side, and then sore wrist on the right side. Also have had difficulty with memory and keeping focused on... -
ARCHIVED First Week Going Gluten Free And Very Emotional!
GFinDC replied to Jallen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You can make things easier on yourself by sticking with whole foods to start out. Frozen foods with 1 or 2 ingredients on the label are simple, like peas, water, or beans, salt. Short lists of ingredients are much faster to read! Eating like this requires you do some actual cooking, so it can take a bit of time to learn that if you aren't in the habit... -
ARCHIVED Pre-diagnosis?
GFinDC replied to grainfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hardly ever do beets myself, so not much help there. I don't remember having a problem with them. Carrots reared their ugly head to me recently. I have eaten them with no problem (that I noticed) until a couple weeks ago. But no more, they decided to get me and I gave them up. The rye bread should affect you if you have a gluten problem. So that... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Reactions To Casein?
GFinDC replied to GFinDC's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Maile, Just based on my personal experience, I would say there is some connection. I don't know how it works or why, but dairy does do something for my thyroid. It's interesting that dairy has a rep for weight loss. I hadn't heard of that, but it makes sense if it affects other people like it does me. I have been substantially dairy free for a... -
ARCHIVED Positive Side Effect!
GFinDC replied to digmom1014's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My nails still have the lengthwise ridges and no half moons after 1 1/2 years. I have some hypo-thyroid issues and am wondering if that is the cause. Ah well, I don't know. Sometimes I have read it's from B- vitamins or some other vitamin lacking too. But after 1 1/3 years they didn't change so I am guessing thyroid related. There are some other threads... -
ARCHIVED Frozen Gluten Free Bread?
GFinDC replied to ceyannuzzi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I tried the Glutino gluten-free fiber bread recently and like that. It has more texture with actual air holes in it. Also it is dairy free. I think the WF breads are fine also (not as good texture though), but I think they all have dairy too. Either one beats the Energe brand by a mile IMHO. Energe crumbles into dust too easy, and has no real texture... -
Hi FlUFFY, I am throwing in a link to another thread you might like cause I posted some hummus like dip idears in it. I went dairy free about 12 years ago after becoming lactose intolerant 1 day. Literally, 1 day I could eat it and the next no way. I got used to making dips more and using them instead of cheese. I noticed you are using picante sauce...

ARCHIVED Clean Eating?
GFinDC replied to LizM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bean dip I make bean dip sometimes using Goya canned garbanzo beans. They are already cooked and soft so you can just drain them, put them in a large bowl and smash them with a tater masher. Could do 'em up in a food processer too I guess. Add whatever extras you like. I have tried adding a little sesame tahini paste, garlic powder, canned salmon, salt... -
Hi, When you go to the doctor it wouldn't be bad idea to ask for thyroid level tests (T3, T4, TSH) and thyroid antibodies tests also. Celiacs sometimes get Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and the low thyroid symptoms can cause tiredness and brain fog too. I have the same kind of symptoms, tiredness, and brain fog etc, along with sore joints etc.. It's really...

ARCHIVED Thyroid Reactions To Casein?
GFinDC replied to GFinDC's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Maile, Falling asleep sure fits the traditional theory of warm milk before bedtime. Though I've only seen that in old B/W movies I think, never in real life. I thought for a while the casein was affecting my brain making me not sleepy. But then I noticed recently when I milked myself that my shoulders and wrist were less sore also. So I figure that... -
ARCHIVED Pre-diagnosis?
GFinDC replied to grainfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Grainfree, Dairy free is the way to be! Sounds like a bumper sticker. That's great that it might be helping. You could stick with the diary free for a week or 2 and then challenge yourself with it. If you just have lactose intolerance you can probably get some relief by taking Lactaid too. Some of us also have casein problems though and there... -
ARCHIVED Celiac? Left Side Abdominal Pain, Sharp Chest Pain And More >>
GFinDC replied to jb1119's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Bendrixx, I had the left side pain for many years also. It took quite a while for it to go away. It still comes back when I get glutened, along with generalized pain throughout the nether regions. Since the docs aren't getting there with tests, you can do your own testing. Go back on the Gluten-free Casein-free diet and stick with it for 3 months... -
ARCHIVED 11 Month Old With celiac disease/gi?
GFinDC replied to ARmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Could be lots of things I suppose. Some kind of food intolerance is certainly a possibility. Is he old enough that you can take him off gluten and dairy for a while to see if there is any improvement? You might find a food diary helpful. And also limit or eliminate processed foods and all the major food allergens. -
ARCHIVED Lump On Left Side Of Neck
GFinDC replied to ohsotired's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Ohsotired, That sounds like it would be in the thyroid area. I had a FNA, (fine needle aspiration) for my cyst. The doc uses a very small needle to take a sample of the tissue. No anasthetic needed, it wasn't painful at all. -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Reactions To Casein?
GFinDC replied to GFinDC's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Sacajawea, I found some links a while back about casein increasing alertness. Seems the miltary did a study on it at one time. I am not really sure if this is a thyroid reaction or a brain reaction I am having to casein. My thyroid doc told me today he doesn't think it is the thyroid reacting to dairy. But I am not so sure. It definitely affects... -
ARCHIVED Caesin, Corn, Dairy.... Seriously? Help! Lol
GFinDC replied to Ariauna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried Lactaid? If the issue is lactose sugar only, then Lactaid should help with that. Make sure if you buy some to check the ingredients, as some store brands have gluten. Now corn chips could be a problem due to dairy also. I got some Tostitos Hint of Lime flavor and they have dairy. The regular Tostitos are just corn, salt, and oil. They... -
You might be getting fruity. LOL Fruit generally has lots of sugars in it, and can make some people gassy. Some people can't digest the fructose sugars also. If you haven't noticed a problem with fruits before, then it probably isn't a total fructose intolerance (my guess). But after going gluten-free, your gut needs time to adjust the colonies of...

I have found that If I eat dairy I can't sleep. Last time I ate some dairy I slept 1/2 hours the first night, 2 hours the next night and 3 the next. I was basically buzzing that whole time, not tired and unable to sleep. I had been thinking this was due to casein affecting my brain, but now I wonder if it is a thyroid reaction instead. Possibly a thyroid...

ARCHIVED Lump On Left Side Of Neck
GFinDC replied to ohsotired's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, I think an endo would be fine really. For that matter your primary physician could probably order an ultrasound of the throat for you. For location reference, the thyroid gland is centered on the throat, right about where an Adam's Apple is in men. And then spreads around to both sides of the throat from there. I think they say the caner rate is... -
ARCHIVED How Long Do The Blood Tests Take?
GFinDC replied to Jennifer2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It took about 3 weeks for me to get my test results back. I had already gone gluten-free 3 months before hand so it was no big surprise the results were negative. I waited 3 months for my appointment and I didn't want to delay that long to start the diet.
