  1. It can be related to celiac disease according to one study at least. I googled "celiac autoimmune hepatitis" and found this: Prevalence of celiac in Autoimmune hepatitis. Celiac disease (celiac disease) may be found in association with other autoimmune diseases. ... High prevalence of celiac disease in autoimmune hepatitis detected by anti-tissue tranglutaminase...
  2. Hi Brooklyn, Sounds like a lot going on in your family. I suppose you are aware of the link between celiac disease and other auto immune diseases? If you google "celiac associated condition" you will find some links listing them. Basically, people with celiac are more likely to develop other autoimmune diseases. I don't know how strict you are with...
  3. Hi Brittany, I wouldn't be too bothered by the tests not being positive. It could just be you caught it early before there was a lot of damage. That's a good thing! The genetic tests are interesting, but since there are about 30% of the poulation with them, they don't really narrow it down much. Some people here like Enterolab for testing also. They...
  4. Hi Swimmr, The gas might just be from a change in your diet. We have bacteria colonies in our guts that consist of different kinds of bacteria. When you make a major diet change you are changing the goodies that your gut bacteria get to eat also. So the balance of which ones are thriving / growing can change. That could end up making some extra gas...
  5. Hi Swimmr I tried looking for a list of ingredients on the Coffeemate site but couldn't find it. They do say in the FAQ section that the sodum caseinate is highly processed so that it doesn't resemble a natural product anymore. Well, not exactly that, but they say it is refined to the point there is not anything like what comes from a cow in it. I am...
  6. Usually they do the antibodie blood tests first. Then the endoscopy. The damage to the intestinal villi can be in patches and not all over. So that is why they normally take multiple tissue samples, so they don't miss it. But being a hit or miss game, they can still miss it! She may not show up as celiac on either the blood tests or the biopsies,...
  7. Hi Nancy (imanstj), I am posting a few links for stuff that might help you decide. The first one is about latent celiac and silent celiac disease. People with silent celiac don't always experience intestinal symptoms from gluten. Latnet and silent celiac on this site The 2nd link is to a list of associated conditions for celiac. You can...
  8. Hi Swimmr, It's good to get started eh? I tried a count of your items and it seems like you are at 20 or more foods, supplements, or drinks today. That's quite a few things in your diet to try and identify one item that is causing a problem. Your body only has one gut, so when you put that many items in it each day and then have a reaction, how could...
  9. Hi CGalley81, Prometheus Labs does celiac blood tests. I add a link to their web page. I haven't used them but they sometimes advertise on this board. I imagine others have used them. You might get more info on testing by checking out the pre-diagnosis and testing forum here. I'm sure there are other labs that do the antibodie tests too. Open Original...
  10. Hi McPhena, If you search the site for breakfast ideas, you will find quite a few threads on it. One I do sometimes is to fry some veggies in a pan and then add a couple eggs, stir. Easy and doesn't take long. Another thing is pre-cooked rice. You can eat it with rice milk and cinnamon and sugar or honey. Zap it in the nuker a couple minutes for...
  11. OK, Simple whole foods Simple whole foods Simple whole foods And then try Simple whole foods And stick with them a while (like 3 months) (or years) And see if you don't feel lots better and learn a different way of eating. Skip all the processed foods until you learn your way around the diet. Skip eating at restaurants...
  12. Hi Swimmr, The idea of an elimination diet can be pretty simple really. You basically eliminate all foods and then add them back in one at a time. That's not real complicated eh? You would want to add basic foods to your diet, not processed foods with lots of ingredients. So say you start with bananas, rice and apples. If you can do these 3 foods...
  13. Hi CGally81, Actually it seems they do a have a couple chewable products. Gluten Free Mall Pioneer Chewables I take a liquid B-12 that is absorbed in the mouth. Yes, I saw in your sig that you went off dairy for a while and then went back on it. That's fine of course, you know your body better than anyone. I was wondering if you had thought...
  14. Hi NurseJo, Welcome to the forum! Sorry, I forgot to say that last time. I was low on Vitamin D also, even when taking multi vitamins. I take a liquid B-12, it's real easy. It is absorbed in the mouth, so it doesn't matter if the gut is not totally healed.
  15. Hi CGally81, I'd say follow the directions on the bottle for the probiotics and enzymes. I've heard the same thing by the way, that the Centrum are not so great. They sell Pioneer brand vitamins on the site here at celiac.com. I haven't tried them myself but they should definitely be gluten free. Are you still on dairy? If you are new to gluten...
  16. I think it takes from 2 to 3 weeks to get the biopsy results back. They would probably send the samples to a lab for analysis. Biopsies don't always tell the full story. Even if they come back negative it would still be a good idea to try the gluten-free/CF diet for a month or 2. Your own body can tell you if you should be eating gluten or not. If you...
  17. I've read that some people with Crohn's follow the gluten-free/CF diet also. Some of them say it helps them, not all though. So, may as well give it a try.
  18. Hi Cgally81, You might be experiencing hunger due to malabsorption of nutrients. Are you taking any vitamins? Some of us take liquid B-12, and Vitamin D. If you do decide to add vitamins, make sure they are gluten-free though. You may find your hunger decreases after a time. My thinking is that after you go gluten-free, your body has a chance...
  19. The main ingredients in most gluteney baked goods are fat, sugar and starch. Butter, sugar and flour, with a few eggs for protein and some yeast and flavorings. So if you give up gluteney baked goods and don't replace them with gluten-free baked goods, I can see losing some weight could make sense. I am not suggesting you run out and buy lots of gluten...
  20. I've used the microwave peanut brittle recipes to do bars. Basically you cook the suger in the nuker until it doesn't glow. Then you add the peanuts and re-nuke. I add more than just peanuts, like dried fruit bits, and seeds and such. Maybe some shredded coconut too. Spread the mixture out and slice with a big knife. Sometimes it is a little sticky...
  21. So Steve, do still have your thyroid? I have a few thyroid issues and earlier this year found my joints were aching/sore. I ended up taking thyroid pills and my sore joints got a better after a little while. Hypothyroid can cause joint pain per the Mayo Clinic dudes: Open Original Shared Link
  22. The gene tests won't tell you if you have celiac disease. Lots of people have the genes but don't develop active celiac disease. My guess is the docs haven't really figured out the exact gene combinations that cause it.
  23. Hi Kathylea, One thing to be aware of is malabsorption. Celiac disease damages the lining of the small instestine. The small intestine is where lots of vitamins and minerals and nutrients are supposed to be absorbed. So when it is damaged your ability to absorb nutrients can be reduced. You could eat ice cream all day and still have a calcium deficiency...
  24. Hi, I have read that some people think a gluten / casein free diet is helpful for people with autism. I don't have autism, but I do avoid gluten and casein, as I have problems with both of them. For me casein affects my sleeping, and I can't get to sleep for several days if I eat it. It also affects my gut and irritates it. Gluten really messes me...
  25. Ever notice how that Pillsbury dough boy is all fat and bloated? I also do most of my cooking on the weekend. Saves time and makes the week go easier. The gluten-free diet took some adjusting for me. I think it is as much habit as anything. Once you learn a new habit of eating gluten-free the old bad foods are not so attractive. And there...
