ARCHIVED Gluten, Dairy And Soy Free?
GFinDC replied to Iluvaceliac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the tip about the Hellmann's -
Hi confused, I think Peter has it right, the list of doc's foods may contain barley malt, not that all of those foods absolutely do contain barley malt. It sounds like they did the skin testing for your allergies? That's where they put just a small amount of the allergen right under the skin to test for reactions. I don't think the skin tests will...

ARCHIVED New Here, Wife Has Celiac
GFinDC replied to notkuroda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi again, Well, the Redbridge didn't seem to great to me at first either. After a few times though it got to be ok. There is also a Belgian beer called Green's. Expensive stuff, but it is more like the heavy beers. You are right about celiac having different affects on people. Some people have very few GI symptoms, and others have them bad. Plus... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Wife Has Celiac
GFinDC replied to notkuroda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There are gluten free beers out like Redbridge. Might be worth trying that out. You will probably be better off health wise yourself if you follow the same diet your wife does. Lots of us do a mostly whole foods diet and avoid processed foods. That eliminates a lot of chemical preservatives, dyes, and other stuff from our bodies. Just a thot. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia Or Celiac?
GFinDC replied to HAPPY DOG SUZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You may or may not be able to add foods back in later Miche. Everybody is different it seems. One food that celiacs commonly have problems with at first is dairy. One dairy problem is lactose sugar intolerance due to the villi being damaged and not being able to make lactase enzyme. If that is the trouble then you might be able to eat dairy after the... -
I don't think it is unusual to have varying reactions at first. My own big think on that is there is a lot of adjusting going on as your intestines heal and start to actually work somewhat normmally again. They are muscles after all and they can get stronger and more active when they aren't irritated constantly. Also when you change your diet you are changing...

ARCHIVED Ok - Now I Am Frustrated - Do I Have This Or Not
GFinDC replied to rahga's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just to share some symptoms. I had black stools and bleeding sometimes also. That followed years of green stools. Lovely brown now though. Anyhow, on the endoscope, if the doctor didn't send a biopsy to a lab for analysis, it is doubtful he could say you didn't have celiac. There is a reference called the Marsh scale that rates the damage at a microscopic... -
Hi Diva, It is a learning experience for us. Fruit is great stuff but too much could cause problems. There is a lot of sugar is some fruit after all and the gut bacteria may like that an awful lot. I avoid sugar after I have been glutened. The body is a great teacher, and you seem to be learning from it now!

ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia Or Celiac?
GFinDC replied to HAPPY DOG SUZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Miche, Sounds to me like you might benefit from trying an elimination diet. That was how I found out dairy and gluten was bothering me. I don't have fibro but do have celiac. Anyhow, you can find lots of threads on this forum about elimination diets. Basically, you start with one or 2 foods that yuo think are ok for you, and build from there. You... -
ARCHIVED Hairloss, Headaches, Fatigue--your Advice Is Needed!
GFinDC replied to Teaching-ND's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Teaching_ND, Good advice so far. Vitamin D is another one to have checked, and B vitamins. Celaic can cause malabsorption so we can be deficient in lots of nutrients. D and B seem to be common ones to be low on. Enterolab is another testing option, they do a test for antibodies in the stool. The results won't "prove" celiac but an official... -
ARCHIVED This Is So Odd... But My Rash Went Away And Came Back
GFinDC replied to amberlynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The rash could be dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). There is a whole section of the board for it. DH is a skin condition that some people with celiac develop. -
Hi Cgalley, I don't know of an enzyme that you can take and have zero symptoms after CC. I don't think one exists currently.

ARCHIVED Started This 30 Years To Late, Wish We Had Known Much Earlier :(
GFinDC replied to New-To-This's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's good news New To This. The gluten challenge to get the blood tests to work is probably not a good idea, IMHO. If you want to get a test done, though, the Enterolab stool testing may be a better choice. The doctor (Fine) who does them says they show antibodies up to a year after starting the gluten-free diet. His tests aren't accepted by all mainstream... -
ARCHIVED Started This 30 Years To Late, Wish We Had Known Much Earlier :(
GFinDC replied to New-To-This's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did they test him for celiac? Just curious, it sounds like he could definitely use a change of diet. I suggest staying off dairy for now, as many celiacs do have problems with it, especially at the beginning of the diet. He should take a calcium and D pill though. There is calicum in a lots of foods besides dairy. There is something called enteral... -
Hi and Welcome! Maybe you could get him to come here and read some of the signature lines of people who have taken years to get diagnosed with celiac disease. If he does have celiac, and he switches to a gluten free diet, he may start feeling better in a few months (or faster in some cases). Celiac can affect people mentally as well as physically....

I don't do soy because I think it is bad for people. You can decide for yourself though. Just a do a little searching and read up on "soy infant formula" or "soy intestine damage".

ARCHIVED Extreme Bleeding Gums
GFinDC replied to PlantLover's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I used to have gum problems all the time before going gluten-free. Brushing, flossing gurgling etc didn't fix it either. My hayfever symptoms were pretty bad also. That all cleared up though after gluten-free. I spend a lot less time and effort on my teeth now and they are in much better shape. -
Well heck, we don't want no sick people around here! Geez Louise! LOL I hope you are feeling better Swimmr. Prolly take a while post antibiotics to get straightened up again. Did your doc recommend a probiotic for you to take along with the antibiotics? Seems to me they should always do that when prescribing antibiotics. Or at least for after the...

ARCHIVED Ten Months Gluten Free And Still Having Slight Digestive Issues Regularly
GFinDC replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You could look at the top 8 allergens lists to see if there might be something there he is reacting too. McCormick single ingredient spices are ok, but spice blends (any brand) are possible problems. Vitamin pills and medicines, sodas, tea, coffee, all that good stuff should be checked or eliminated by a trial abstinance. There is most likely something... -
Hi Kris, I think the best way to start gluten-free is to go with a simple whole foods diet. The fewer boxed/canned foods you buy the fewer labels you have to read. And the less chance there is of cross contamination. Think about eating rice and veggies with some kind of dead animal in it. The live ones squeal too much. Avoid dairy for the first...

ARCHIVED Gluten Digest Pills? A Cure Or Not Even Close?
GFinDC replied to Harley0000's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Harley, This is a controversial topic on the forum. I used to be on the other side of this issue myself, but changed my mind after trying Vita Cost DPP-IV. The other posters are quite right, it is not a cure all and can't help much. However there is some evidence that DPP-IV can help digest some gluten in a lab environement. I don't know if there... -
I sometimes fry up some bacon and keep it in the fridge. Then I can make a quick corn tortilla roll-up with a piece of bacon, some mayo, lettuce. Toast the corn tortillas first. A couple of these does me fine for a quick breakfast. I suppose you could do this with soy bacon or some other meat free option. I try to avoid the soy products though so I prefer...

ARCHIVED Everything Came Back Normal
GFinDC replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi CGally, Regarding the gene testing. A while back I saw an article somewhere on line about researchers finding around 32 or 36 more genes related to Crohns' Disease than what had been previously recognized. It is not like the medical community knows everything there is to know about celiac or any disease for that matter. You know they say about... -
ARCHIVED Enzymes With Foods...what To Use?
GFinDC replied to ciavyn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe try some DPP-4 also. It might help a little. I use Solgar vegetarian digestive enzymes. Not that I am vegetarian, but I just like the brand. I also take the Solgar cal mag D pills. Gluten free Mall has Pioneer brand gluten-free vitamins. Remember it is not just wheat, but also rye and barley that we need to avoid. Also oats affect quite... -
Hi Iffy, Celiac can show up at any age. The advice to follow a simple whole foods diet is good. It is easier to eliminate hidden gluten sources if you don't eat processed foods. Things to avoid would be any processed foods like boxes of this and cans of that etc. You can start with rice and frozen or fresh veggies. If you use frozen veggies check...
