  1. Enterolabs is in Texas, USA. They do tests for antibodies in stool. They say the antibodies for gluten can be detected for up to 12 months or more after going on the gluten free diet. Open Original Shared Link The gene tests are interesting and can rule you into the group of potential celiacs, but they don't prove you have celiac. The EGD biopsy...
  2. I haven't ever tried Rice Dream ice cream. But Rice Dream milk made me sick, and it bothers some other people too. You can search the forum for Rice Dream and find plenty of posts about it being bad. Soy is another possible culprit in the ice cream. Soy is one of the top eight allergens in the US and seems to affect some of us celiacs also. There is...
  3. Gluten can affect the brain, so it is not impossible to feel depressed, or flat, or anything else for that matter due to gluten. Brains are pretty important things for us, so it does pay to try to minimize any gluten in the diet. There is some thought that (gliaden) can act like opiates in the brain. And some research that it can destroy brain cells. ...
  4. She should also replace her toaster, if it was used for regular breads before. There are tons of recipes in the recipe section here too.
  5. The link didn't work for me but I did find the page: Open Original Shared Link I also called Goya Consumer Affairs and asked about the flours. They told me they put the statement about may contain wheat or soy on the packages of manioc flour because they do use shared packaging equipment. But they also clean the equipment between packaging each type...
  6. They have this Orgran "No Egg" replacer product on Gluten Free Mall. I haven't tried it and there are no reviews yet, so got no idea how it well it works. I use just about any oil for a sub to butter in recipes. Corn oil is cheap as an alternative. Open Original Shared Link Ingredients: Potato starch, tapioca flour, vegetable gum, methylcellulose...
  7. You may be having neurological affects. This Science Daily article talks about ataxia but also says the impacts can be wider. Sensitivity To Gluten May Result In Neurological Dysfunction; Independent Of Symptoms:
  8. Swelling (edema) can be a symptom of an allergic reaction. Many of us develop other food intolerances besides gluten. The most likely culprit is one of the top 8 allergens. The Mayo Clinic list is: * Milk * Eggs * Peanuts * Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts) * Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder) * Shellfish (such...
  9. Hi Don, I suggest you stick with a whole foods diet to start out. Also avoid soy and dairy. You will see this advice often on the forum, for a simple reason, it works. Avoiding processed, packaged foods means you don't have to spend lots of time reading labels and wondering if the ingredients are safe. The label on a bag of potatoes usually says "ingredients...
  10. If you are sensitive to casein then using it in coffee every day is not a great idea. It's simple to do a test and find out for sure. You eliminate all dairy for a couple weeks. Then eat some hard cheese and see if you react. Hard cheeses have little lactose but lots of casein. Eat the cheese for a couple days and note any changes in how you feel.
  11. I suggest you start by eating lots of rice. Learn to cook several versions with veggies and chicken or hamburger etc. You can make large batches and freeze some of it for later. You can eat Mission brand corn tortillas also, or get Enjoy Life rice wraps at Whole Foods or elsewhere. Also search for breakfast ideas here or check the recipe section for ideas...
  12. Well, I had no idea what you all were talking about Neti pots? But Youtube knows everything and sure enough they have a video of a guy using a Neti pot. By the way, this site is kind of interesting for getting a patient eye view of some meds side affects. Open Original Shared Link
  13. Your symptoms sound very familiar! I do have a suggestion for the burping problem. Try some peppermint tea and some Altoids peppermint mints. I haven't checked the other Altoids versions so don't try them without checking. The peppermint helps to relax the muscles and get the gas out. You need to decide if you want a diagnosis or not. Most of the...
  14. An endoscopy can only reach the beginning section of the small intestine (duodenum), so if the damage is further down they won't see it or be able to biopsy it. Sometimes the docs do a camera capsule endoscopy that allows them to see further into the intestine. They can't take biopsy samples with the camera though. So, it is very possible for the endoscopy...
  15. I made some mini muffins with the Betty Crocker yellow cake mix recently. Added a banana and an avocado and some pecans. They make a nice light breakfast. Sometimes I fry a pan of veggies, green beans, onions, whatever is handy and then stir in a couple eggs. Or eat leftovers from dinner. If you search the forum for "breakfast idea" you will find several...
  16. Oh she's not pure! Everyone get around her in a circle and point! Not pure not pure! Nah Nah Nah! Eeew! Just kidding! I used to eat oatmeal every morning, had lots of neat ways to make it too. After a while I realized oatmeal wasn't liking me so much anymore. I tried the gluten-free oatmeal too and it didn't help. Some of us just can't...
  17. Hi Crystal, Maybe some hemp milk or coconut milk would work.
  18. I think Enviro Kidz Koala crisp cereal might work. It would probably make for crispier texture than oats.
  19. Hi Kelley, Yes, celiac can cause you to lose weight. Celiac damages the villi lining the small intestine which can cause poor absorption of nutrients. Many times an untreated celiac will have low vitamin levels because of malabsorption. Your doc should be testing your vitamin levels for B and D vitamins and iron also. There is no need to go hungry...
  20. The main thing gluten does is make it easier for bread dough to rise. Or for wall paper paste to be nice and sticky. Gluten does not have to be in anyone's diet for them to be healthy though. There are plenty of other nutritious grains and foods for people to eat. Your friends may mean well, but it is up to you to manage your diet and health. Most...
  21. Does the University have a clinic where you can get tested? The blood gliaden antibody tests are a good way to start. Your symptoms do sound like they could be celiac or gluten intolerance. If you want to get tested though you need to stay on gluten until the testing is done. Unfortunately though the tests are not perfect. They work well for positive...
  22. I think my reaction to casein is non-typical, so not much help I suppose. But I can't sleep if I get any. Plain old super go juice for me. I won't even feel sleepy for 2 or 3 days and then slowly it tapers off. I get some GI problems to but not as bad as gluten.
  23. Well, take your list of foods you ate the day you got sick. That's your possible problem list right? Eliminate all those items from your diet for a week or so. Then add them back one item every 3 days and see if you have symptoms develop. For items with multiple ingredients you need to add back each ingredient separately to determine the irritant.
  24. I've read web pages that claim diatomaceous earth can get rid of parasites. I have no idea if it works or not though. Just thot I would mention it in case anyone else has experience with it. Supposedly people feed it to horses sometimes.
  25. You could also bring your family medical history on both sides, aunts, uncles etc... Celiac is an autoimmune disease, and they tend to run in families. So a history of autoimmune diseases in the family might persuade the doctor. If you google "celiac related condition" or "celiac associated condition", you will find lists of other autoimmune diseases that...
