  1. You may have another food intolerance going on besides gluten. Soy, or nightshades (tomatoes) or something else.
  2. There may be a reason to do the biopsy if the Canadian Health system requires it for cost reimbursements. I don't know if they do but it might be worth checking into. I think in England they reimburse celiac patients for some food costs. Does it do any good to call the health care system administrators and ask for an earlier appointment? There are...
  3. Eh, sorry what did you say? I didn't quite catch that, my ears are ringing again. I have ringing ears also, and the volume seems to vary depending on what I eat. Not sure what all the triggers for it are at the moment though. Gluten I am pretty sure of, soy maybe too, not sure about others yet.
  4. People use the term NCGI (non-celiac gluten intolerance) sometimes also.
  5. I've used the Tom Sawyer blend and like it also. I plan to try making my own blend soon though. Here's link you might like that describes various non-wheat flours and their use. It is not geared towards celiacs though. The Cooks Thesarus Open Original Shared Link I figure I will get a small amount of several flours and try them out. I saw this...
  6. If you are interested in getting a diagnosis, you should stay on your current diet until you can have the blood antibody tests for celiac. The tests are not perfect but if you are off gluten before the blood draw they are not so great at all. the antibody tests are the first test and often an endoscopy is recommended as a follow on test. If you go off...
  7. Hi Cricuteer, You'll probably have better results if you cut out all processed foods at the start. The simpler the diet the better at the beginning. Another thing to consider is what kind of milk you put on the cereal, if any. Soy milk bothers some of us. And Rice Dream and other Dream milks are also a problem for some. But I would suggest you put...
  8. I got some at a local Whole Foods this week. The original flavor is what I got. If you are avoiding soy check the ingredients as some of the flavored ones have soy. Looks like they used to make a gluten version but stopped making it. So all their corn thins are gluten-free now. Open Original Shared Link eal Foods manufacture 9 varieties of Corn...
  9. How about tea or coffee? Some flavored teas have barley. Not sure on the coffees but seems worth checking. If you are doing any processed foods, even if they claim to be gluten-free, you might just try eliminating those for a while and see if things improve. You might want to look at the top allergens lists also and see if there is anything there....
  10. There are several things that can happen. There are food allergies, like the hay fever type symptoms people get. That is one kind of immune reaction. So you could have allergies like that to a food. I think that is an Ige reaction. Then there is celiac, where the immune system attacks the lining of the intestine. This is a different type of immune...
  11. Hey Tena, Oh, yeah Michigan has a little snow too? :-) Good idea. I plan to sit inside and make gluten-free cookies and muffins this weekend while it snows. Stocked up on gluten-free flour yesterday night. Whole Foods was a zoo. Got some bird seed for the birds too. Gives my cat Muffin something stare at out the winder. Take care! Paul

  12. Casein keeps me wide awake for a couple days running, no sleep. I get GI symptoms, but nothing like gluten. Doesn't hurt like gluten does for days on end. oh, what a cheerful response.
  13. I agree that soy is no good for us. Not even remotely ok for me anyway. Hemp milk or coconut milk would be worth checking out. The ones I have seen so far are soy free.
  14. You could probably get hard cider at lots of bars. I think they are generally safe for us.
  15. Hey Paul.....I thought Michigan was one of the only places that got storms! Hope you stay safe and are stocked on what you need.

Stoke the fire and watch a good movie this weekend.

  16. Hey Tena, The devils drink, yep coffee. I started having keel-over spells last year. I would be sitting at the computer working along like always and boom, come back to reality half slumped over. Was kind of strange seeming because there was no warning, just boom out like a light. I also had sore joints at the time. Doc did an ekg on my brain and...
  17. Shoot, tain''t nuthin. Little, little sumpin maybe. Another thing that makes me think hyper-thyroid is the 'tude. My mom had hyper-thyroid and she would get red in the face and get a little snippy at times. Which was totally unlike her normal personality. She also had the heart racing thing and excitability. Hashimoto's destroys the thyroid. It...
  18. I'd guess thyroid too, especially since you have a throat sensation. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is not real uncommon with celiacs. I'd ask my doctor to test for thyroid antibodies. I have a problem with dairy that keeps me wide awake. But it doesn't make my heart race like you described. That really sounds more like thyroid to me. Hashimoto's can cause...

    ARCHIVED Overwhelmed

I am not a super star cook or anything but I can throw hamburger or chicken in my big electric skillet with some onions, mushrooms, celery and peas. Then after its cooked add some rice and water and spices and you have a meal. I have one of the large electric skillets with a glass lid so I can make enough for a week if I want. You can add coconut milk...
  20. gluten-free helped most of my digestive issues. But I still had sore joints, ankle swelling, insomnia, ear ringing, some GI problems. I felt a lot better when I went from soy light to soy free. Took a week and a half to really get past most of the remaining issues. I am not 100% yet but I do feel like I am on the right track to get there, or at least...
  21. You have to eliminate gluten (wheat, barley, rye, oats) from your diet. There are ways to do that without spending lots of time checking with companies and reading labels. A simple whole foods diet is a good way. Whole potatoes don't have a list of ingredients to check, they are just potatoes. Same with whole veggies of any kind. Most meats are safe...
  22. Ya got a point there, if the diet is helping then it is most likely celiac. Or celiac and Chrohn's. Crohn's affects the large intestine, and people do say that red blood is from low in the GI tract, implying it is from the large intestine. They say black stool indicates bleeding in the small intestine, higher in the GI tract. I don't know if that is an...

    ARCHIVED Coping!

Well, I actually found one that Peter missed. Yeah for me! It is possible to get wine barrels sealed with wheat paste. Here is a place that sells them to wine makers. That doesn't mean that every wine out there has been stored in a barrel sealed with wheat paste of course. Probably most larger wineries use stainless steel storage tanks for their wine...
  24. Here is snippet from an article on BBC News. They say that fish oil supplements can help reduce onset of psychotic mental illness. Open Original Shared Link A three-month course of the supplement appeared to be as effective as drugs, cutting the rate of psychotic illness like schizophrenia by a quarter. The researchers believe it is the omega-...
  25. Yep, a gastroenterologist. Your best chance to avoid gluten is to not eat anything that isn't cooked at home from whole foods. Foods like rice and veggies, home made soups, meats etc are good. My younger brother had both celiac and Crohn's diesease. So it is possible to have more than just celiac. Lots of people with Crohn's do well on the celiac...
