  1. It sounds like you are having reactions to something in your diet. Rashes and a distended belly are the symptoms I think indicate that. Did you change anything in your diet around the time the problem showed up? You might want to try an elimination diet to see if you can identify a problem food.
  2. If you have been gluten free for 5 weeks, the biopsy would not be a reliable test. You could get the Enterolabs test done, even after being off gluten for a while. If you think the gluten-free diet is starting to help, that means something right? It is not an instant cure all though, It takes time for your body to heal. It also takes to time to learn...
  3. Well, I had to smile at the idea of you scooting up down the steps. :-) You do what you gotta do though! Flax seed meal is pretty good stuff. I usually put a little flax seed meal or psyillium husks in my food, or both sometimes. Sometimes I make muffins from the Betty Crocker yellow cake mix and add flax seed meal. And a banana, and some peanut butter...
  4. Hi Karl, It's good that you have started eating safe meals you cook yourself. At least that way you can control what goes into your body, and identify the ingredients that may cause problems. I assume you have eliminated all the possible gluten in your coffee, tea, soda, beer, medicines, and any vitamins you take. I used to sometimes sort of pass...
  5. Hi Swimmr, Welcome back! Good to see you back in action again. I was wondering where you had wandered off to! Hubby will probably have some interesting tales to tell from Haiti. Those porch steps are tricky things in the winter. I imagine going down steps is a little slower these days? I know when I broke my arm a few years back I was not...
  6. If it is lactose intolerance you can give them Lactaid brand lactase pills when they eat dairy. Watch out for generic alternatives because some of them have gluten. Or give them Lactaid milk to drink. If they are ok then it is a lactose problem. If they still have issues it is more likely to be a casein problem. You can also take them to the doctor...
  7. Hi, The only testing you can do without being on gluten is the Enterolabs tests, as far as I know. The blood antibody tests are no good if you aren't on gluten for a while, and the endoscopy is also not going to be reliable. It seems like your body may have provided you with a better test anyway. If you have a clear cut negative bodily reaction, it...
  8. There is a ton of information on the web about how gluten and casein affect the brain, including info on gluten ataxia and schizophrenina, etc. Here is one description of a study on how gluten antibodies affect Purkinje cells in the brain. Open Original Shared Link Quote- We were interested to determine the mechanism by which Purkinje cells are damaged...
  9. I don't know how big a problem candida is really. But I have read that caprylic acid is supposed to help with it and it is found in coconut. You can also buy caprylic acid pills to take.
  10. Yes, several people have posted in the past about having negative tests but having lots of symptoms. And then getting better on the gluten-free diet. There are also people who have no GI symptoms and test positive for celiac. The tests for celiac are not at all perfect right now, even the endoscopy misses some cases. A real good real test is if it makes...
  11. Hi, Starting the gluten-free diet can be a tough go at first. For some people it involves a complete change in their daily diet. Gluten is a fiber, so removing it means you are getting less fiber. You can add other kinds of fiber to your diet though. Psyillium husks and flax seed meal or both good fibers, and can be added to many foods. Just stir...
  12. Right, I don't think the ANA tests have anything to do with gluten. That being said though some people have posted here that they had high ANA readings. The way I understand it an ANA test results is kind of a general indicator of possible autoimmune disease, and not a definite indicator of any particular disease. And sometimes it doesn't mean a whole...
  13. You can also get Betty Crocker gluten-free cake mixes at a pretty reasonable price in many grocery stores. For making your own mixes you also would want to get some zanthan gum or guar gum. Or some Orgran GFG that they sell on the Gluten Free Mall. It has good reviews.
  14. Hashimoto's is an associated or related condition to celiac disease. So they tend to run together. There are other related conditions too, try a search on "celiac related condition". Or search this forum for Hashimoto, several people here have it. Your doc should run the celiac antibody tests on you to see if you are making gliaden antibodies. If you...
  15. I don't know where you live so don't know if this helps. I bought some tapioca flour (Goya brand) and rice flour (Cuzcutlan brand) at a local (DC) Giant grocery store recently. I also got some teff flour and garbanzo bean flour at an Ethiopian grocery. It wasn't real expensive. I haven't tried the Asian grocery yet but I understand some of them carry...
  16. How do you know you didn't have intestinal damage? Some people have silent celiac where they don't have GI symptoms but they are still being damaged. Personally I think people go through an adjustment phase where their gut bacteria balance changes due to the different foods they are eating. Things that might help: staying strictly gluten free, eating no...
  17. Hmmm, the positive antibody indicates a reaction to gliaden right? The endoscopy is not a reliable indicator except when it is positive. If the endoscopy is negative that does not mean anything except they didn't find anything. The simple answer is to stop eating dairy again and see if your symptoms clear up. Unfortunately celiac testing just plain...
  18. You might like corn thins, Whole Foods should have them. They are round and thin, not exactly cracker-like but they are nice with peanut butter. Cravings will probably taper off after a while.
  19. You can probably wash the popcorn and dry it. Or just wait a while until you are feeling better and test it. Packaging equipment is often shared, so cross contamination can happen during that process. Imagine famer Joe packed up some whole wheat flour in the morning, and then packaged up popcorn in the afternoon. Unless farmer Joe thouroghly cleans the...
  20. Hi, I found myself getting much more sensitive to gluten after I had been on the gluten-free diet a while. Also, I think our bodies go through a period of adjustment to the new diet. The gut bacteria balance may change as a result of different foods being introduced and other foods being removed. That process should self correct after awhile. Pro-biotics...
  21. Sounds like you have a good plan there Horsegirl. Waiting until things settle down and then testing foods one at a time should work. I hope it is not corn also. I used to eat Fritos but haven't tried them in a long time.
  22. Hi Horsegirl, Seems like it would help to simplify things. Why not just eat one kind of chips for a while? At least you'll eliminate some of the possible problems. It could be there is cc happening in one of the production lines. You could also eliminate all chips for a while and test the ingredients individually. If you don't have problems with...
  23. I suggest you get rid of all the soy in your diet. There are non-soy milk alternatives available. Also, just because your vitamins are gluten free, doesn't mean they are safe for you. You could have additional intolerances besides gluten that are causing problems. If one of your vitamins has that item in it, then you would be dosing your self with an...
  24. Just a thot. If the air circulation is so low that a smell lingers for many hours that is probably not a healthy environment to be in.
  25. Well, what are the ingredients in the corn tortilla chips? What kind of oil are they fried in? If you get sick every time you eat them, then you may have developed an intolerance to one of the ingredients. I used to eat Tostitos chips but can't now because I have a soy intolerance. No more Glutino pretzels either, they have soy lecithin. I've read...
