  1. They cause pain in my gut, which I don't need. All the usual, gas and bloating etc. They seem to cause irritation. I haven't tried them in a long time. Turnips bother me too. And nightshades, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers. They may not bother you at all though. We each have to determine our own bodies reactions. An elimination diet is a good way to...
  2. I'd leave out the celery and carrots, cause they don't do me well. And celery is a major allergen in some countries. For any canned fish check for soy, even if it says on the front label packed in olive oil etc.. Open Original Shared Link The eight foods identified by the law are: 1. Milk 2. Eggs 3. Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod...

    ARCHIVED "allergy" Testing

Right, the celiac tests are not perfect 100% accurate answers. Stay on or start the gluten-free diet and eliminate dairy, and soy for 3 months. You need to eliminate wheat, rye, barley and possibly oats also. Your body is the best test device available, much more accurate and reliable than a doctors test tube. Think about eliminating all processed foods...

    ARCHIVED Dyslexia?

Well, the capability of gluten affecting the brain is well documented. Just do a search on gluten ataxia and you will find plenty of info. If gluten can affect one part of the brain it can most likely affect other parts too. I have had symptoms of dyslexia but they have mostly cleared up since going gluten-free. I don't have any doubt in my mind that...
  5. Hi Connie, I am sorry for your loss. It seems strange sometimes how life works out. May the Lord keep you and bless you. I do want to suggest you stay with the gluten-free diet for a few months more. The celiac testing process is not a perfect thing, and sometimes they give false negatives. So the best thing in the case of a negative is to do the...
  6. Well, I am not perfect in that regard either. I used to eat those Starburst fruit chews things because they are one of the few gluten-free things I could find in a convenience store without any dairy or soy. Basically a bunch of corn syrup, sugar and flavoring chemicals. No more though. Then I found Corn Nuts by Kraft. Corn, corn oil, salt, at least...
  7. Hi, I have a cyst on the front of my throat, on the thyroid actually. When it first appeared rather suddenly it sure got my attention. Once I had a biopsy and they determined that it is just a fluid filled cyst I felt a lot better about it. I've had this cyst for 3 years or so now and am still around. The doctor did do a treatment on it to reduce...
  8. That's a woofie with a problem. Shoot, my dog Corey used to love nutter butter cookies. Until he ate one and his whole face swelled up on the right side. It gave him a tooth infection or something. No more Nutter Butters for him after that.
  9. Hey Bea, I know my symptoms of about everything I can think of reduced when I went off soy. So, yeah, I think if you are reacting to one thing, then other reactions can be worse. Kind of like putting out a fire with gasoline, and then trying kerosene as an alternate. It's not any help. But you are making progress, getting rid of the bad things for...

    ARCHIVED "allergy" Testing

Celiacs often have problems digesting milk sugar. The tips of the villi are where the lactase enzyme is made, so when they are damaged the lactase is gone. You could eliminate dairy for a few months and see if the bloating recedes. That's the best way to test IMHO. You said you are waiting for blood tests? I assume you mean celiac antibody testing...
  11. I have a reaction to coffee also. Just wanted to mention tea. There are a ton of flavored teas and plain teas you could substitute. But same deal, some of them have gluten in the flavorings. So be careful of them also. Plain tea should be ok. If you have hayfever the flavored teas with flowers etc are usually a problem also.
  12. That's a good article on refractory sprue F.A. Thanks for posting the link. I felt much better when I fIrst went gluten free. But I didn't feel completely right. Over time I discovered other foods that were bothering me. Eliminating them made a big difference. Soy was a major improvement when I got rid of it. But I also have problems with dairy...
  13. Oops, well, actually there was a meeting yesterday in Arlington. Sorry, I didn't think to post it in this thread. Dr. Gary Kaplan talked about celiac and treatment for low Vitamin D, magnesium, and thyroid hormones. Open Original Shared Link Dr. Kaplan had the talk filmed so it may be available on his website soon. There were about 60 or 70 people...
  14. Hey Bea, One of my most noticeable symptoms of eating casein is not being able to sleep. At I times stayed awake for 3 days straight before being able to sleep a little. Wierd stuff it does. I take a calcium pill every few days just as a precaution. But other wise don't worry about it. According to one site I read a long time ago, swelling feet...
  15. I sometimes make treats using a microwave peanut brittle recipe. You can add anything you want to it in addition to the peanuts. Some shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, dried fruit, pumpkin seeds, carob powder, cinnamon, raisins, all kinds of stuff.
  16. You could also be experiencing a change in your gut flora. All the juicy gluten and casein is gone and now the bacteria that thrived on that needs to adapt or die off. You might want to try some pro-biotics, may help. Many of the pro-biotics have dairy in them so do check labels. Rice and beans and ghee may not be agreeable to you. Lots of us develop...
  17. How about corn meal and banana with some cocoa powder, cinnamon and honey cooked with coconut milk in the nuker for a few minutes.
  18. I think you would be fine with Mission brand corn tortillas. I saw a program on the tube about their factory. They have 4 dedicated lines making nothing but corn tortillas.
  19. Try joining this support group for DC. they have restaraunt reviews for the area. Open Original Shared Link Description Events and Information of interest to people with Celiac Disease / Sprue or parents of children with Celiac Disease in the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia or Suburban Maryland area. 20. Greens is a gluten-free Belgian beer. A bit pricey but good stuff if you like the heavy beers. I think Whole Foods carries Greens. It is sold by the bottle, not in a 6 pack. There is also a gluten-free beer called Bard's Tale, but I haven't tried that or seen it sold anywhere.
  21. Well Connie, tomatoes are a nightshade vegetable, so maybe you had a reaction to them? Potatoes and peppers are also common nightshades that some of us react too.
  22. Have you tried an elimination diet Kayo? That is as good a way to go as any IMHO.
  23. I would take DPP-4, then maybe some milk of magnesia to get the crud out, then some Pepto Bismol a few hours later to make things nice and pink inside. Well, Pepto can sooth things some too, i suppose that's the more important thing.

    ARCHIVED Glutened

You need to be a bit cautious about what restaraunt servers tell you is gluten-free. I was at an IHOP pancakes house a while back and asked the waiter if they have any gluten-free pancakes. I figured not likely but maybe they would have the Van's Waffles or something. It took a little while for the young feller to get an answer from the kitchen but it...
  25. I avoid foods made on shared equipment. It just isn't worth the risk to me. I used to eat Tostitos but when I stopped soy I cut them out. Wylde brand gluten-free pretzels are soy free. Tiny but tasty.
