  1. Prednisone and Imuran are immune system suppressants, so they could cause an improvement in both celiac and Crohns. Celiac and Crhon's are both auto-immune diseases so suppressing the immune system can help. Typically though celiac can be controlled by diet alone. Often Crohn's patients use a combination of diet and medication. Some Crohn's patients...
  2. Welcome and congrats on figuring out the problem! Gluten can cause gluten ataxia and is something you might want to read up on. Also some people put their autistic children on a gluten free casein free diet. Some say it helps, I believe it could myself. You'll often see it abbreviated as Gluten-free Casein-free or GFCFSF when adding soy-free.
  3. Potatoes mess with my gut and head, and sleep. Tomatoes do the same and so do peppers. I never really liked eggplant so am not about to test it. So eggplant goes in my probably a problem list so I avoid it even more than I otherwise would the disgusting yucky stuff. Intolerances can be temporary or permanent. So if you stay off nightshades for say...
  4. Right, try a search on silent celiac or latent celiac. Symptom free people are in danger just like people with symptoms. And there are many, many symptoms besides digestive issues that are related to celiac.
  5. Good for you taking the diet seriously. It has a huge impact on a celiacs health. You might not be aware but since it is a genectic condition, there is a chnace any chidren or relatives of hers can develop it also. Another thing to be aware of is the possibility of her having other food intolerances appear, especially when she is new to the diet. Generally...
  6. You can also take Larabars. They are gluten free, soy free and dairy free. Lots of different flavors and available in many grocery stores. A Larabar, an apple, and a banana are a pretty nice lunch too. Taking lunch is a good idea, they have lots of lunch boxes in stores to choose from for good reason. Besides the microwave, maybe check if you can use...
  7. Well at least we got you off the sugar and the caffeine Connie. Now if we can just get you off the cheap booze, the roughnecks, the cream puffs, the chawin' terbacky and the glue sniffin' we will have something to celebrate! Lol, just kidding. Congrats on your perseverance with the health search paying off.
  8. I haven't looked for any research on it. but soy is listed on all the lists of the top 8 food allergens I've seen. So if it is that commonly listed as a problem for people in general, it seems to reason that it would be a at least as likely to be a problem for celiacs. None of those lists says soy and wheat though, or eggs and fish as a combo. They only...
  9. Have you had your thyroid levels checked? C could be a symptom of low thyroid also. And get rid of the diary to see if it helps. But give it at least a month dairy free before you decide. Your body needs time to adjust.
  10. Oh yeah new doc time for sure! Make sure to get your daughters medical records to take to the new doctor too. There are lots of things that could be going on, but with her weight that low she needs to be under medical care. There is a doctors area on this forum with doc for different US states recommended. You also could check with your local chapters...
  11. Agree agree agree. Try some meat or add some avocadoes I'd say ditch the gluten-free pasta for a while and stick with rice or quinoa. Are you eating nightshades? Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant? They can cause problems for some people.
  12. Sounds like the docs think you have both have celiac ladies! @ adab8ca, Don't be too concerned about not feeling better right away. All of us are individuals and have our individual reactions to things. There is also a withdrawal period for some people that can be unpleasant while the body/brain adjusts to not having gluten around. I felt better...
  13. I get swelling in my feet and lower calves when I eat some things. So I try not to eat them things. I was drinking some instant Lipton Iced Tea recently during the hot weather and got the swellies. Went away several days after I stopped the tea. I don't usually drink tea, and now I have another reason not too. This site talks about edema (swelling...
  14. I have celiac myself and also soy intolerance, among others. They can cuase similar symptoms. The thing to be aware of though is symptoms among different people can also vary widely. They say there are 200 symptoms of celiac disease, although I have no idea where that number comes from. There certainly are quite a few different symptoms people on this...
  15. Hi Saraha, One other place to look for problems is vitamin pills and medicines. It might be worth eliminating any vitamin pills for a week or 2 and see if it helps. Medicines of course you can check with the manufacturer for gluten free status. Also any flavored teas or coffees are worth eliminating for a couple weeks to see if it helps. Same with...
  16. I saw Chebe mixes on clearance / discontinued stickers at a whole Foods in Alexandria, Va today. $2.27 a package, if that's good price I am not sure. Seems like it would be, but I have never bought it before.
  17. That's great RWG! kind of like opening a new door. Things are getting better for us. And there may be more of us to enjoy the results too! Probably a lot more people will be diagnosed now that the press has taken some interest in celiac disease. It's all good! :-)
  18. Hi Rhoda, It sure seems like if the limited diet helps then there might be something going on with your normal diet? I have to avoid soy and nightshades myself, plus carrots, turnips, dairy, garbanzo beans, probably some other things I am forgetting. Guess I am saying that you might need to really look at some other foods as possible problems besides...
  19. Hmmm, numbness and twitching could indicate nerve damage or brain affects. Perhaps you should read up on gluten ataxia and how it affects people. Dairy may not be a problem for you though. Celiac damage can heal after a while on the gluten-free diet, which can lead to a recovery of the ability to eat lactose, the sugar in dairy. The tips of the villi...

    ARCHIVED Grief

Hi Googles, I think your feelings are perfectly normal. Being different is, well being different. It takes some getting used to, especially when it is thrust on you all of a sudden. It kind of reminds me of those dreams where you are going around doing all kinds of things and suddenly realize you are nekked, and nobody said anything. Except we aren...

    ARCHIVED Insomnia

I used to have problems sleeping if ate any dairy. Sometimes it would keep me awake for 3 days straight, not even tired. Of course, I didn't eat much dairy. Just tested it once in awhile to see if I could eat it after being gluten free. Eventually ( 2 years on the gluten-free diet), I found that I can eat a little dairy now and still sleep relatively...
  22. My vote is the potato starch. Potato is a nightshade, along with tomato, and peppers.
  23. I see in your sig you are avoiding potatoes. How about tomatoes and peppers? They are also nightshades and can cause problems.
  24. Er, what Mushroom said, but ditto. I think you are on the right track. You could try for an endoscopy but it is not too reliable after being gluten free for a while. Or Enterolab testing might be another thing to consider. All in all though, if you are getting better without gluten in your gut, then it probably isn't going to help much to have a...
  25. I want to suggest you take a look at the ingredients for those gluten-free breads etc you were eating when you started feeling bad and write them down for future reference. It could be there are ingredients in there that you are reacting too, and it could help to have list of possible suspects on-hand later.
