  1. You can check the manufacturer website for gluten info. Many of them have a page listing their products gluten free status. You can also purchase a shopping guide or search this site for info other people have found. Like Peter said, some companies always list gluten ingredients. For the others you would have to check them out.
  2. There are people here who are told they have fibromyalgia or arthritis. So yeah, they get joint and muscle pain. My joints hurt from eating soy, so I don't do that no more. Celiac can cause malabsorption of vitamins and minerals. The resulting vitamin / mineral deficiencies have their own negative affects. It doesn't matter if you are taking vitamin...
  3. Well, you may want to get a water cook book then! It's really not bad stuff if you add some veggies, meat, and spices to it and boil it for a while. Some people call it soup. Just kidding! LOL. Well, I wasn't as dependent on eating out as you. But I had gotten in the habit of buying my food in little frozen boxes at the grocery store and micro...
  4. Oh, well, most of the people who report on their endoscopy here say they didn't remember it at all. So yeah, they can put you out and wake you up after. That's good to see the doctor. I find it helpful to write down the symptoms I have been having and give that to the doctor. That way I don't forget something while I am there talking to them. You could...
  5. Thanks, it's a silly painting but it does look exactly like me. LOL Yeah, the Betty Crocker yellow cake mix is good with some cinnamon and all spice added, and maybe some coconut. I sometimes mash up a ripe banana and add it also. Or some peanut butter. Make it in muffin tins and you have a traveling snack. You might like to try this microwave...

      Live Love Twillight

Ha ha! Thank you, you are the first one to welcome me, I appreciate that :D

  7. Hey, I wanted to thank you. You have been incredibly helpful since I got here, Thanks a lot!!

  8. Hi Martok, Glad to hear you are feeling better today! Breakfast is something I skip a lot. I do make little gluten-free mini muffins sometimes which are good for a quick snack. Betty Crocker gluten-free cake mixes would work good for that. Oh my avatar isn't pizza, although I can see it looks like a slice. It is a silly painting I made a long...
  9. Hi Martok. I have had red blood in stool before also. Last time it was when I was still eating soy and got glutened. It always cleared up after I got over the glutening. This is something you should discuss with your parents though. It probably is a reaction to something in your diet. But it may be something a doc should look at also. The tests the...
  10. Yeah, you do need to check the meds too. Pills often have some kind of starch in them to help hold them together. Some use corn starch but some use wheat starch. The thing to do is check with the manufacturer on them. Keep in mind manufacturers don't consider the binder a medically important part of the pill, so they may sometimes change binders to use...
  11. If you do a search on fingernail you will find several threads about, well, fingernails! I think this is the longest one and talks about the ridges on the nails. Half Moons On Fingernails Lack of B-12 Or maybe this is the ridges thread... Ridges In Fingernails Who has these??
  12. If you have been gluten-free for 6 months don't waste your money on a biopsy or blood tests. You need to be actively eating gluten for 6 weeks or more for the blood antibodies to buildup to detectable levels. And the endoscopy is the same deal, probably not going to show anything at this point. At least that's what I've read. There is Enterolab testing...
  13. Nightshades are lots of different plants actually. Whole foods says about 2800 different plants fall in the category of nightshades. This WH page has a nice write up about them. I am actually testing nightshades tonight. I ate a burger with a slice of tomato. First time in say 1/2 a year or so for me to try a tomato. Guess I should these tests on Friday...
  14. There are several celiac centers around the country you could check on. They would have doctors who specialize in celiac and could give you advice. Or you could take the free route and do the diet as your own test. You either get better or you don't. But do the diet 100% for several months at least and you should have some idea if it is a gluten problem...
  15. Yes, you can have a false negative biopsy. Or a false negative blood test. Also you need to stay on gluten for the tests to have a chance of detecting celiac. It is also possible you have gluten intolerance. Either way you would need to be gluten free for life.
  16. Hi Martok, Do you feel different at all since going gluten-free? Any improvements? Some of us take a longer time to heal than others, it isn't like there is a definite fixed time frame. Healing depends a lot on keeping totally 100% gluten free too. There is plenty of room for gluten to sneak into your diet if you are eating processed foods. Also...
  17. Hi AshleyJo, It might help your Hashimoto's to stay gluten free then. I am pretty sure I read on here where other people with Hashimoto's had some symptom relief after going gluten-free. Others said they didn't have any relief but they had been celiac for a long time and untreated (not on the diet). People have also reported their other autoimmune conditions...

    ARCHIVED Coping!

Welcome Lord Varca, join the club! Getting started on the gluten-free diet is most likely a confusing time for most people. There are lots of ingredients to learn about that most people never think about. Plus you will learn that cross contamination is a problem for many of us. In other words, very small amounts of gluten that get into our foods unintentionally...
  19. Woofie woof woof! That was the doggies saying he was just trying to protect mommy by eating all that nasty gluten himself.
  20. Is your thyroid autoimmune disease Hashimoto's Thyroiditis? If it is Hashimoto's then it is probably related to celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a related condition or associated condition with celiac. You can do search on "celiac related condition" and find lists of other autoimmune diseases that celiacs tend to get. I had joint paint that...
  21. You could look at Enterolab testing, but I don't know if the health care system there would accept it. Enterolab is in USA Texas, so it international shipping may not work for it. They could tell you. There is a test called Biocard from Canada for $50 bucks or so that take a drop of blood and you can to the test at home. Mot any test requires you...
  22. Hey Carla, You can use about any starch to thicken a soup. Rice flour or corn flour, corn starch, etc. If you wanted to add some fiber as well as thickening you could add some psyillium husks or flax seed meal. Another thickener you could use is okra. well boiled sweet potatoes can be mashed up and thicken a soup, or pea flour or mashed up cooked peas...
  23. There are some threads here somewhere that tell how to make your own soy sauce substitute. They also mention Bragg's amino acids as a possible substitute for soy sauce. Soy is bad for breathing people IMHO, so maybe a make your own version or a Bragg's would be worth considering. I haven't tried either myself so can't say which is better.

    ARCHIVED Coping!

Hey Jenny, You may want to take it easy on all the substitute foods for a while. Your system will do some adjusting as you go through the healing process and new foods could be upsetting. Another thing we sometimes run into is lactose intolerance. It sometimes goes away after being on the diet for a while. I use Mission corn tortillas to make little...
  25. I take DPP-IV (DPP-4) enzyme sometimes. It is supposed to help digest gluten. There are some people who don't think it helps though. Glutenease contains DPP-4. You can get DPP-IV from other sources though, and usually less expensive. My experience is it reduces the length of time my symptoms last, but it does not totally eliminate them. Like I said...
