  1. Where are you? Sometimes location helps as some products are regional, and other people in your region can direct you to specific stores, etc... My son is 3 and was diagnosed last June at 2 1/2, but that seems like ions ago. We're really become pro's at this. I'm telling you this so you do know that while it's overwhelming for you right now, it very quickly...
  2. I made these at Valentines Day and can't speak for how long they stay fresh because, well, they are LONG gone. We used Duncan Hines vanilla frosting and frosted them and then decorated with sprinkles and candy hearts. 1/2 C Butter 1 C Sugar 2 Eggs 2 Tbsp Milk 1 Tsp Vanilla 2 1/2 C Flour Mix**see below** 1 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder pinch of salt Cream...
  3. Christine, Are you giving your daughter medications for her cold? These are not always gluten-free so that might be your culprit. Does she have GI issues, if so I would lay off the dairy until she's a little more "healed". That may be causing her pain or whatever and so she doesn't want to eat. I would very, very carefully go through what she's been...
  4. Terri-Anne, Have your kids been tested for Celiac, or just allergies? I read the "signature" you have and all but the "lucky duck" sound like they could be Celiac related. Perhaps it's not just wheat your son is "allergic" to and so there's gluten in things he's eating and that's why he's hurting? And ADHD can be a food-allergy/Celiac induced thing, so...
  5. I second Karen's post.... Delphi Forums is a LIFESAVER, especially in the cooking & baking department! Bridget
  6. The post saying if they are made in the USA they are gluten-free is correct. I can't put my hands on it, but there was a post about this in the Delphi Forums a while ago. Bridget
  7. The thing to remember with Bette's bread recipes is very often they are for TWO 8 1/2 x 4 pans....not one pan, and not the 9x5 pan. I had the same problem until I read the instructions VERY carefully to see what I was doing wrong. Sigh. We've all been there and have our own "Bread Baking Battle Scars". Bridget
  8. Yeah, most companies these days are so afraid of getting sued that they will hardly ever say something is gluten free. Often what they will say is that they do not contain any gluten-containing ingredients but they cannot guarantee the glute-free status of any of the ingredients they obtain from other companies. I understand why they do it, but boy is it...
  9. I agree with Richard. The only person in our family that has been diagnosed with Celiac is my three year old, and it's not really a big deal. In fact, I'm starting to think the earlier they are diagnosed the better. I have heard horror stories about teenagers being diagnosed and having real problems adapting. My son only knew "real food" for like 2 years...
  10. I seem to do all my online gluten-free shopping exclusively at the Gluten Free Trading Company now. They have an AMAZING selection, and I've received wonderful service from them. Bridget
  11. Connie Sarros has a cookbook that I own (but am at work so don't have it handy right now) but it's something like Gluten-Free cooking For Kids and Busy Adults. Each recipe has a footnote that gives the diabetic substitutions. It's really a great book, I highly recommend it. The flour mix she uses is great too....my mom made cookies for my son at Christmas...
  12. BRDBNTL, If you call the company they may be able to tell you what the base of the caramel coloring is. CC made in the USA is generall sugar based, but made outside the USA has a higher chance of being barley based. But they should be able to tell you either way what it's made from. Bridget
  13. Just be very careful with Progresso and still read all the ingredients, even if it doesn't list wheat in their allergens statement. They apparently do not consider "wheat starch" wheat, and I've seen it in the list of ingredients but not in the allergen statement. So, beware and read those labels!!! Bridget
  14. This is ALL very interesting to me as I contacted Longhorn this summer and got a response that may as well have said "Go away, we don't serve your kind". It wasn't even one of those "nice" "we can't help you" messages that we sometimes get. So, I promptly emailed them back and informed them they better get on the bus bc there are so many people out there...
  15. You said you are still working on getting her tested? Just so you know, if she's gluten-free the tests will come back negative. If she hasn't been gluten-free too long it may not be too late, if you get the tests done soon. I just posted a link in another thread here to the NAPHGAN guidelines for diagnosing celiac in children, go armed with that to your...
  16. DEFINITELY have your children tested, it sounds classic to me. And I am the mother of a 3 year old diagnosed last June who's only symptom was "failure to thrive"....weight loss, rashes that could not be controlled, etc.... If it's not celiac disease no harm no foul, but if it is you can save them a lot of hardships. And if your doctor "doesn't believe...
  17. Go to the Delphi Forums (www.delphiforums.com) and go to the Celiac Support Group, and in there is the most amazing products list you have ever seen including a whole list just of baby food and products. I do believe Gerber is in there, but check it out. As for the cheerios, sorry, the closest thing is something called Amaranth-o's and some love them and...
  18. I don't have the diabetes to deal with, my MIL does, but I do have a 3 year old son recently diagnosed with Celiac and I can tell you that it's COMPLETELY overwhelming at first, you think they'll never eat anything "good" again. Now, 8 months after his diagnosis, I am here to tell you how wrong that is! You will feel like a pro at this very soon if you stick...
  19. Funny, I'm more trusting of the smaller "home grown" companies! I find the people at places like this (and at smaller 'neighborhood' stores) much more willing to say "I have no idea" and then try and find the right answer. I think it's bc they are "real people" who have a lot to loose...the reputation of their own hard work...and they want to do the right...
  20. Well, if you decide you are looking for someone from Vermont, up here in the whacky weather we call New England, at any point just let me know! Bridget
  21. celiac3270 my friend, if you like yellow cake better than chocolate you have GOT to try the Dowd & Rogers Vanilla Cake mix. It is truly to die for. I LOVE chocolate cake, and I LOVE the Danielle's mix, but I would choose the D&R vanilla cake hands down over the Danielle's. I made both in cupcake form for my sons birthday and all the relatives were...
  22. All the "myth" about Budweiser, Heineken, Sapporo, etc...being gluten-free are totally, completely false. The only gluten-free beers are the ones listed in the beginning post on this thread (and maybe som others, but they are specifically gluten-free not commercial) Some of those companies claim that threw their process the gluten is filtered out. This is...
  23. Jen, That may be what the person answering the phone at the ped's office said. But I also know that I have a friend that is a doc and she HATES it when her desk people "answer questions" they have no business answering. That said, they tested my son for CF too. The sweat test as well. The reason? We had the blood drawn for the celiac disease test and while...
  24. Did you confirm the gluten-free status of the flouride tablets? My son needs them too, but I have been unable to get in touch with the maker of the brand he's been prescribed so I'm holding off on them. But medications can contain gluten (ie, wheat as a binding agent) so maybe that? Bridget
  25. Jess, The only problem with not getting an "official" diagnosis now is that when she goes to school, she will not be covered by 504 which entitles her to accomodations making her school life "gluten-free" or at least close to it. For instance, in kindergarten if they use play-doh they will have to make an accomodation for her (a gluten-free version or...
