  1. Lots of good alternative veggies here. Yeah, we do get in a bit of a rut, but I can't stand kale and mustard greens are hard to find--may have to grown my own. I have been using LOTS of sesame oil lately
  2. Thanks purple. I have printed out the tomato ones.
  3. Given my screen name, you can bet your sweet bippee I use a lot of them, onions too. I remember way back in the 70's my mom thought I was an "extravagant cook" because I put mushrooms in everything! I will have to bring back some Costco dried mushrooms this year, 'cos I'm an hour's drive from the supermarket here. I am not okay with tasteless food, and...
  4. I am just coming off a major RA flare, and I read that nightshades are very inflammatory (my CRP is still 33, has been as high as 81) so have decided I MUST totally eliminate nightshades. Have been mostly nighshade free but have cheated a bit with tomatoes because I fine them so indispensable when cooking. They form the basis of so many saucy things and...
  5. Maybe this is what you read. This is taken from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority: "What’s the difference between ‘A1’ and ‘A2’ milk? The name comes from the type of protein in the milk. Milk from cows, and any other milk producing animal, can vary quite a lot in the types and amounts of proteins they contain. Cow’s milk contains six major p...
  6. My doctors (rheumatologist, dermatologist) do not see any relationship between my autoimmune diseases and what I eat. It seems like his doc at least may have had some clue--maybe he has GI symptoms also??
  7. Don't you just hate it when they do that, doctors keeping a register of "problem" patients because of their own incompetence! That's the whole problem I found with HMO's--there is no privacy within them. I once kept my mouth shut for a whole year about this really GROSS doctor, rude, incompetent, etc., etc., because I didn't want to get blacklisted. I finally...
  8. What? You want us to lie to you??? Sorry, but for a lot of us, weight gain, constipation, tingling, numbness, ataxia, are classic signs of celiac. It is a master of disguise and presents itself in so many different forms to prevent us from being diagnosed. You will find a goodly percentage of folks on here who have had to diagnose ourselves because...
  9. Hi, and welcome to the forum. The one thing you didn't tell us was how long you had been eating gluten before you were tested. You need to have been constantly eating gluten for 2-3 months for the tests to be valid, and even then there can be false negatives.
  10. Hi Mandy: Thanks for taking the time to care about this poor man, seems like no one else is. I would like to caution you that he probably does have psoriasis, as do I. It is another autoimmune condition, like my rheumatoid arthritis, most likely caused by his intolerance of gluten. His red scaly rash and extreme itching sounds like me, and I put myself...
  11. Stomach cramping with cereals in high school. Major reactions to corn starting at 29. Lactose intolerance at 52. Stopped eating pasta at 60. Self-diagnosed at 67. Also intolerant to soy and nightshades. Also have psoriatic arthritis, diagnosed at 63, which is what led to my self-diagnosis of celiac. Long-term incorrect diagnoses of fibromyalgia and...
  12. Thanks all, for your responses. Since I don't appear to react I guess I will just quit worrying about it
  13. I have read some posts here and there about vanilla extract and artificial vanilla flavouring, and am I little confused about what I am supposed to be concerned about. So far as I know I have never had any problem with vanilla--I use the extract, not the flavouring. Can anyone explain in simple terms?
  14. Hi and welcome to the board. Unfortunately, the answer to your question is often yes, because we know our bodies better than anyone else. I am sure your doctor wants to see if you respond to the diet, which is pretty diagnostic in and of itself, while not "the gold standard." But why wait until you have fullblown celiac and other problems before seeing...
  15. Some of your questions are unanswerable because everyone is different. It depends on the type and degree of damage, how long before you were diagnosed that you had been suffering, how leaky your gut is, what nutrients you have not been absorbing well. From a personal perspective you should at least have a CBC, check levels of Vitamin D, folate, ferritin...
  16. Wilem, I was able to buy some here in Christchurch, can't remember where now, but it wasn't a problem. If they have it here they must SURELY have it in Oz
  17. I totally agree with the other posters; that is way too short a time to notice much/any improvement. Unfortunately, it can be a long journey back to good health, but it is well worth sticking it out. All the label reading in the supermarket can be a bit daunting at first, and knowing all the code words that some food processors use for gluten even more...
  18. Well, I can't speak for ankylosing spondylitis particularly; our bulder had it in this thoracic spine and I don't know if he was on meds for it, but it did limit his lifting ability (that's what he hired the big guys for )and there were a couple of occasions when he had flares and was unable to nail or do much of anything but supervise. For me my PsA...
  19. Yeah, just don't smoke, drink alcohol or coffee, take birth control pills...
  20. Hi RiceGuy: I had posted this once before and that I tried using Solgar, and the issue was unresolved with all your online help except that someone suggested it could have been the Mannitol that made me break out all over my face the next day. That became a big ?? when I was prescribed Humira which has Mannitol as an ingredient. So I went tracking down...
  21. Well, here's a cautionary tale. When my DH and I first were treated under Medicare (yeah, "oldies") our PCP had us take bone density tests. We had previously tested very well on bone density, in fact mine was so high that they told me if I lived to be 100 I would never have osteoporosis, and my husband's previous test was similar. We were both shocked...
  22. A good decision. There's nothing to compare with a "test drive"
  23. There is an extensive thread on this site on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Do a google search and you will find a wealth of information.
  24. Hi DinaB: There has recently been a thread running here on the difference between gluten intolerance and celiac which you may well find interesting. A quick google should bring it up. From what I have read here, if you do ln fact have DH then you have a positive celiac diagnosis. It is quite possible that your original testing, whether blood or biopsy...
  25. Interesting article. However, it will only work if you can obtain it. I have been trying without success to get Spectrum for a year now (ever since going gluten free). I know it used to be available here but I think I just discovered why we can't get it any more. I read a newspaper article about deforestation in Indonesia, where they are cutting all the...
