  1. I wonder what percentage of supposed IBS is actually celiac??
  2. I think maybe what Mayfaire is saying is that she thinks a disproportionate number of patients overall are failed by their doctors. Certainly when you read on here the numbers of people who have seen multiple doctors and ended up having to diagnose themselves, it does give cause for concern. And this statement is not doctor bashing. It is just a reflection...
  3. Just to be clear, there is a difference between dairy (casein protein) and lactose (milk sugars). Some of us right from the start can tolerate casein but not lactose, since the lactase to digest the lactose is found on the very tips of the villi which are flattened by the gluten. So once the villi are healed the lactase should return. Others are intolerant...
  4. I really enjoyed the hemp milk. Wish we could get that and almond milk here (New Zealand, are you listening?!!)
  5. Well, I have eliminated gluten, soy, corn, lactose, nightshades and all my digestive problems have gone away. The intractable problems are RA and psoriasis, the other auto-immune things brought on by gluten. I have just started Humira injections to calm down the inflammation still raging through my body. I just was (self) diagnosed too late to be able...
  6. I was initially very afraid to eat out. I had one place in town I would go to but even they tossed croutons on my salad once. I just said to the waitress, "Excuse me, but are these gluten-free croutons?" and made her leave the plate on the table while she brought me another, to be sure she didn't just take the croutons off! Lately I have been a little...

    ARCHIVED Educating Doctos

Doctors are about as hard to educate as lawyers--both groups know everything (I know, I worked for both). About all we can do is educate our own doctors and spread the word as much as we can. It is pretty hard to combat the AMA, the medical schools and "established practice".
  8. Hi Lonewolf: It is reassuring to know I am not alone. I have tried all the remedies, from zinc to T-gel to Dovonex, all the Rx shampoos, eucalyptus, tea tree. Have never tried prednisone because I do not tolerate it at all. I started off with dandruff as a kid, progressed to seborrhea and then to psoriasis, initially only small patches, then whole scalp...
  9. I am 100% gluten free and my scalp is worse than ever!!
  10. These are the things I can currently not eat: tomatoes, capsicum, peppers. If you check my info, I am in Christchurch, NZ. On a positive note, I made a wonderful white lasagne last night using silver beet instead of spinach (also a no-no) with mushrooms (of course!), onion, garlic, ricotta, egg, fresh herbs, mozzarella and parmesan with a bechamel...
  11. I note in your original post that you said you reacted to "veggie cheese". I believe most vegetarian cheese is made with soy. There are a goodly number of us on here who are intolerant of soy as well. I know it is a major problem for me and I avoid it like the plague, even the soya lecithin in chocolate. I am not sure about your doctor's advice to continue...
  12. Considering ther latitude of Oregon and the angle of the sun, you would probably only make Vitamin D from sunshine for 4-5 months a year, max. Maybe if you spend that much time out in it that would be enough, or maybe you drink enough D-fortified milk. But I still think it would be a good idea to have it checked or have a DEXA scan. Osteoporosis is pretty...
  13. Yolo would tell you that you make them brush their teeth before you kiss them!
  14. Did your doctor know you haven't been eating much gluten when he ordered the biopsy? They normally like for you to be eating a pretty gluten-full diet for at least a couple of months before the biopsy for a clear result. It does sound like you have not been eating much at all except for the pita bread. And if you gave up the bread and pasta because of...
  15. The equivalent of two to three slices of bread a day is normally considered to be sufficient gluten intake for testing. The fact that you had such a violent reaction to the pizza slice could indicate that you have already done some healing How much gluten have you actually been eating lately?? Cake, biscuits, pikelets, scones, pastry, etc.,?? If you...
  16. Two quick thoughts. Your brother should stop eating gluten (but you already know that, he doesn't apparently) Everyone diagnosed with gluten intolerance should get their vitamin D level checked. (By the way, most of my teeth have crowns too!)
  17. Many of us (those of us who gained weight because of our disease, rather than the supposed norm of losing a lot of weight) find that as we progress on the gluten free diet the weight drops off without even trying. If I were you I would not obsess about weight at the moment; just concentrate on eating a healthy diet and see what happens. You may find that...
  18. Hi Liz, and welcome to the forum. I am sorry that your daughter is suffering so much. Pain and stiffness often seems to go along with celiac, usually initially diagnosed as fibromyalgia in adults before the celiac is identified. I did not realize I was a celiac until I developed rheumatoid arthritis. It is also very common to have food allergies/intolerances...
  19. Welcome to the forum, Mysh, and particularly the down under thread. As you would expect, most of our gluten free products are a little different from what other forum members have available to them. The good news is that the range is expanding and you have probably noticed gluten free sections in the supermarkets. Some things you still have to go to a...
  20. We don't get all the same products here that you have over there, e.g., no Coles. I wouldn't eat the salsa anyway as I'm on no nightshades (hope it's not permanent). As for the freedom food, I'm not sure. I first found out how reactive I was to Soy by buying biscuits from Woolworths, but they were "Free From", not sure if that is the same co. Anyway...
  21. Did you check to make sure they had not added any seasonings to it? I had difficulty buying unseasoned lamb yesterday
  22. I will NEVER buy a Fantastic product; trouble is Dh keeps coming home with them. He brings them in, I throw them out. I keep telling him, only Sakata, and even then you have to read the label for the flavoured ones.
  23. If you google "easy bruising" here on the forum you will find a lot of entries. Many of us have ended up with these purple blotches, especially on hands and legs, without recalling any injury. (I have several right now; still haven't been able to stop this from happening.) The official MD response--you have thin skin!
  24. Just to be the devil's advocate, there are also celiacs whose blood tests and biopsies are both negative, but they are still celiacs. So they learned absolutely nothing from the testing, but they sure learned when they stopped eating gluten (and sometimes not eating other things besides). So, if your biopsy was negative, would you resume eating gluten and...
  25. I had a terrible spell of vertigo for 6 months, which resolved spontaneously. Don't think gluten related. The one symptom that was definitely related was dizziness and fainting from gas and bloating pressure. Haven't had this happen since gluten free. (I have always felt faint when I get too hot; don't relate this to gluten though.) I guess I am just...
