  1. Yes, huge pain! But I've definitely found a lot of good tips on this site. Good luck!

  2. I see that you are new, too. Hope you find lots of good info. here. Isn't this whole thing a giant pain in the butt?

  3. I'm a newbie too - officially Celiac for only 16 days (confirmed by biopsy January 30). I suppose I'm lucky though, I was diagnosed without ever really having any Celiac symptoms, so I wasn't sick for months or years before being diagnosed like so many other people. Back in October I got sick with antibiotic-induced colitis and c.difficile (nasty gastrointestinal...
  4. My mom is from Northern Ireland, dad is from Northern Rhodesia, and they lived in South Africa (Jo'burg) in the '70s before eventually coming to Canada.
  5. I keep reading about toaster bags, but don't know where to find them. Can anyone recommend any stores in Toronto (or GTA) that sell them?
  6. Have you considered cider as an alternative? I was a beer drinker too, and I"m learning to like cider. Magners Irish Cider is gluten-free and not bad. There's also Strongbow and Woodchuck, though I've never tried them. You can get Magners and Strongbow in LCBO. Never looked for Woodchuck, so I'm not sure if they have it.
  7. I asked the same question many times, but keep getting the answer that if you're celiac, you have to be 100% gluten free. I was only diagnosed through a biopsy 4 days ago, though I had a positive blood test months ago so I was fairly sure I had celiac. But unlike most people, I have almost no symptoms when I do eat gluten. The doctor only tested me as an...
  8. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! I"m feeling much better now!
  9. Does anyone have any practical travelling tips? I've been reading crazy tips like bring your own breadmaker and toaster, ship things to yourself at your destination. I'm going backing packing in Australia, New Zealand and Europe for 6 months and will be staying mainly in hostels, and moving frequently. None of those tips are very practical. I've also...
  10. So Hydroxypropl trimonium is on the BAD list as a gluten source, but what about Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose??? I just checked my vitamins and a lot of them have Hydroxyproply methylcellulose. So is it the hydroxypropl thats bad, or the trimonium. Anyone know?
  11. I'm Irish (from the North) on my mother's side, and South African (of British and Russion decent) on my father's side. I've heard there's also a lot of celiacs in Finland. Something to do with pale skin?
  12. Hmmm, interesting points. For now, I've been instructed to keep eating gluten because I haven't had the biopsy yet. I suppose I could be asymptomatic because if I have celiac, I've maybe only had it for 2 months - ever since the colitis and c.difficile episode. Perhaps I had it before, but I certainly never had any of the problems with energy levels that...
  13. My bloodtests came back positive for celiac, and I'm currently waiting for the biopsy. Thing is, I have absolutely no symptoms. Could the blood test be wrong? A few months ago I got sick with antiobiotic colitis and c.difficile. Then, just when I was recovering, out of the blue the doctor says mmm, lets test you for celiac disease. Before the colitis...
  14. I'm new to this forced gluten-free living and don't know how to find gluten-free non-food products. I note that shampoo, etc. never has ingredients labelled, and so I have no idea if its gluten free. Do I have to buy this stuff in a special store? Can anyone recommend any brands of gluten-free products for: - shampoo - conditioner - make-up - toothpaste...
  15. I wonder whether the removal of "gluten-free" has anything to do with changes (or impending changes) to regulations in Canada??? I emailed Parmalat Canada a few days ago to inquire about their yoghurt, and this is the response I got: Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding our Astro Original Balkan Style Yogourt products. In response to...
  16. Does anyone have any advice about airplane food for a vegetarian celiac? I'm newly diagnosed and am about to leave for a 3-month trip to Australia. I"m worried about what to eat on the plane. The airline has gluten-free meals, and vegetarian meals, but not gluten-free vegetarian. Eating meat is not an option for me. I'm also worried that with all of the...
