  1. I love that it forces me to cook almost all of my own food. And food is also something that really binds my husband and I together. We both love to cook. And he's an amazing baker. And there's nothing I love more than spending time in the kitchen together cooking and creating. Oh, and eating too
  2. There is such thing as non Celiac gluten intolerance. People test negative for Celiac, but nevertheless have a very real intolerance to gluten. The treatment is the same: gluten free diet.
  3. All natural peanut butter Chocolate Quinoa Dried apricots Raisins
  4. I live on LaraBars when I travel! My suitcase is always full of them. I buy them at Costco too.
  5. Watch out for some of the supposed gluten free bread containing "gluten free WHEAT starch". Yup, they allow wheat starch in gluten free bread. They say it has been processed to lower the level of gluten, but I still got sick from it. The brand I had was Kelkin. Also, I had trouble finding gluten free food in small towns. The cities were fine, but the smaller...

    ARCHIVED Road Trip

Whenever I travel, I work on the assumption that finding gluten free grain containing food will be difficult. And I love and need carbs so living on nothing but fruit and salad doesn't work for me! So, I always bring a good supply of crackers, cereal and granola/snack bars (LaraBars are my favourite) and then supplement that with things like fruit, yogurt...
  7. Likely the fries. If you google 'swiss chalet allergy guide' you can see what is and isn't safe. The fries are not safe. The guide says: All fried products may contain one or all of the allergens in this table as the fryer oil can be a source of cross-contamination of allergens
  8. Have they tested for C.Difficile? It causes nasty diarhhea too.
  9. Thanks for your support everyone! I should clarify that the package had ingredients, but what it was missing was the name of the person or company that made it. Even with the ingredients listed, I didn't really trust whether it was complete or accurate, since it had spelling mistakes. Like "rice sour".....hmmmm, rice flour? If you can't even take the care...
  10. I live in Canada, but I just wanted to say how much I miss Oz and NZ! Two months after I was diagnosed Celiac I started a 6 month trip around Oz and NZ and loved your countries! Plus, I found it so much easier to find gluten-free food there than here. I was stunned that the tiny grocery store in Cooper Pedy had more selection of gluten-free food than the...
  11. This morning my sister-in-law dropped off a loaf of bread that she bought for me at a farmer's market. Its labelled gluten free, but doesn't state who made it. I'm really nervous about eating things from farmer's markets that are supposedly gluten free, because so many are just made by people in their own kitchens and they have no clue about cross contamination...
  12. Constipation is my predominant symptom. Without fail, if I've get glutened, 4 weeks of constipation and lethary will follow. Same if I eat apples. The birth control pill does it too. After eliminating all of those things, I'm okay most of the time. But, I still go through some periods of constipation in the absence of having been glutened (I know this,...
  13. Celiac Disease is NOT a Food Allergy.......I confess, in restaurants I usually say I have a gluten allergy. I figure the word "allergy" is more meaningful than Celiac Disease, and better conveys the seriousness of the disease.

    ARCHIVED Ireland

Be careful of gluten free bread in Ireland. I brought home a loaf from Ireland made by a reputable gluten free company, and labelled gluten free. I couldn't figure out why I always felt sick after I ate it until I read the ingredients....wheat starch. Yes, in Ireland they allow wheat starch in gluten free bread. P.S. Australia is even better than Ireland...
  15. Pre-diagnosis I ran marathons. Post diagnosis, I never feel consistently healthy or energized enough to keep up with the training. I've cut back to half-marathons, but even those are harder than they used to be. One of my problems is low iron - no matter what I eat, I can't get my iron levels high enough, so I have to take supplements. It seems to be helping...
  16. I have a colleague who is also celiac and I've watched her more than once just scrape the toppings off a sandwich. And she's confessed to me that she drinks beer every once and while. And then she'll look to me for sympathy on those days when she's not feeling well because she thinks that as a celiac, I can relate. Um no, I can't. I NEVER cheat, so I really...

    ARCHIVED It's Official

I've been gluten free for 3 years, very strict adherence to the diet, and now I'm suddenly having problems with coffee. It started last week. I get bad gas before I"m even halfway through the cup. I don't drink a lot of coffee, at most 4 cups a week, but I ENJOY those 4 cups!!! I like tea too, but I WANT MY COFFEE!!! I think I'll try a trial separation...
  18. I don't have any advice to give, but just wanted to say that don't dispair, there are patient and understanding guys out there. My boyfriend isn't celiac, but he puts up with it all (including our 100% gluten free house). We had only just started dating when I first got sick (and then diagnosed 2 months later) - he had the chance to run away but didn't. Be...
  19. I've been given questionable food before too when I ordered gluten free, but I can't remember what airline it was. On an Air Transat flight last year they gave away my gluten free meal to someone else, who ate most of it before asking why they'd gotten the special meal! I always order a gluten free meal, but assume I won't get anything so I bring lots of...
  20. Thank god I live in Canada! I did get rejected for life insurance by one company. Made me so angry that I eat well, exercise regularly and am in perfect health except for the Celiac. But the overweight person who eats fast food every day and will probably have a heart attack or develop diabetes in a few years would have no problem getting life insurance...

I need to rant. A friend of mine keeps talking about how she
  22. When I was a teenager, I had no cycle. I'd get my period two months in a row and then nothing for 3 - 4 months. When it did come, I had horrible cramps. I started on birth control at 22 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven! No cramps and ridiculously consistent periods - I knew the hour when it would start each month! Then i was diagnosed with celiac...
  23. My husband always brushes his teeth. He even brings a travel toothbrush with to weddings and new year's parties so he can kiss me after he's eaten his gluten. So sweet!
  24. It doesn't bother me when people bring treats into work, because its usually crappy store bought cake or cookies, and I know I can bake something gluten free that tastes a lot better! But I do get excluded from many work events. I work in the public service and so we have to pay our own way for the annual Christmas party, summer BBQ, etc. They can never...
  25. I had a blood clot in my leg last November, but it was in the superficial vein, not the deep vein, so not as serious as DVT. I have no idea if it was related to Celiac or not (I was diagnosed 3 years ago and am strict about the gluten-free diet). But no one could figure out why I had the clot - the spontaneous clot is usually due to blunt force trauma which...
