ARCHIVED Rice Cakes?
ElseB replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you can tolerate corn, I'd recommend Corn Thins. Way more taste than rice cakes. They're Australian, but we get them here in Canada. I can't eat apples anymore, but when I could, I'd just spread peanut butter on apple slices. I've also been known to just eat it straight out of the jar! -
ARCHIVED Allergy Medications
ElseB replied to josh052980's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Claritin for allergies and Advil for pain. I should note that I live in Canada, as I know often the gluten-free status of drugs differs depening on the country. -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With In-Laws Who Make The Process Of Eating Into An Event?
ElseB replied to Maltiriel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We just had our work BBQ today. I skipped it, as I have every year since I've been diagnosed. Christmas party too. We have to pay to attend these events so no way I"m paying just to sit there and watch others eat. If we didn't have to pay, I'd go just to socialize. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Flax Seed? Flax Meal?
ElseB replied to StephanieL's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Bob's Red Mill also has gluten-free flax. -
ARCHIVED How Did Your Doctor Tell You?
ElseB replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the middle of the endoscopy, when I still a bit loopy from the drugs, the gastro told me she saw signs of Celiac. Or at least I think she did, cuz I couldn't really remember anything afterwards. At the follow up appointment she said "you have celiac disease. Look it up on the internet. See you in 6 months." And she walked out of the room. -
This past weekend my husband and I went up north to a lodge with my mother-in-law and other family. It was something my MIL invited us to, and from the beginning, I hadn't really wanted to go. Meals were included, so of course I was nervous. I was feeling a bit better after speaking with the chef the week before and it sounded like they knew what they were...

ARCHIVED Gluten In Restaurant Chicken?
ElseB replied to stellagogo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, I think its injected as some kind of flavour inhancer. Same goes for turkey - I have to remind my mom every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas to be careful when she's buying the turkey! -
I'd be inclined to include oats, given that even if you can tolerate oats, we can't eat "regular" oats. You'd be at risk of eating things made with regular oats, oat flour, oat bran, etc. Just a suggestion....

ARCHIVED 1St Normal Stool In Months
ElseB replied to loubyloo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hear ya! I eat lots of fibre, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, stay completely gluten free, and yet....chronic constipation. Laxatives don't even work. Magnesium supplements were working for a while, but now even those don't help. -
ARCHIVED Anyone From Northern Ireland
ElseB replied to JackDaniels's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I"m not from Northern Ireland either, but have been there several times (my mother is originally from Belfast). Most countries, and I think NI included, have Coeliac associations that are great resources. They can provide you with information about where to shop, safe restaurants, and often have support groups too. When I was first diagnosed, I found my national... -
ARCHIVED Reacted To Something Labeled "gluten Free"
ElseB replied to ssryan's topic in Super Sensitive People
It is also entirely possible that the product was contaminated with gluten. -
ARCHIVED Mouth Sores
ElseB replied to jcmi10236's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Absolutely. I used to get horrible canker sores that caused my whole mouth and glands to swell. My sister had them to, and in her case, it was an early warning sign of Crohn's Disease. -
ARCHIVED First Time On Plane Celiac
ElseB replied to slee11211's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I agree with the other comments about bringing your own food/snacks on board. Even if you order a gluten free meal, there's no guarantee you'll get it. I had the situation once where they gave my gluten free meal away to someone else who ate the whole thing before asking why she's gotten a special meal! But I didn't mind because my carry on bag was full... -
ARCHIVED Good gluten-free Pizza Crust Recipe!
ElseB replied to zus888's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's another one: Open Original Shared Link I love this one because its easier to work with - its more like a batter than a dough. I get too frustrated with pizza dough because its so sticky. -
ARCHIVED Yellowtail Savignon Blanc Has Gluten?
ElseB replied to MJ-S's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Under $5 a bottle? I've never seen anything so cheap! I can probably thank the LCBO for that. -
ARCHIVED Yellowtail Savignon Blanc Has Gluten?
ElseB replied to MJ-S's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to this article, its not just the flour paste in the barrels that could be a problem. Wheat is used as a clarifying agent in wine. Its not clear whether it can end up in the finished product. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Pizza Delight (Canada) Now Offers gluten-free Crust
ElseB replied to canadave's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hmmmmm, just like Pizza Pizza, Boston Pizza and all the others, I'll stay as far away as possible from their supposed "gluten free" pizza. The crust may start out gluten-free, but the finished product is far from it. Ever noticed how flour from the regular crust gets transferred into those little containers of toppings? -
I almost wish I hadn't read this. Yet another thing to be paranoid about!

ARCHIVED Frankie's In Uxbridge Ontario
ElseB replied to challengeaccepted's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I love Frankies too, expecially the paninis. I live in Toronto but we try to go a few times a year. Have you been to the bakery too? The butter tart squares are amazing. -
ARCHIVED Malt Extract
ElseB replied to ottawagirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you sure the box was marked gluten free? According to Chapman's website, those bars are nut free, but NOT gluten free. If the package really is labelled gluten free then I think they made a labelling error, and should be reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (if they really are labelled gluten-free). -
ARCHIVED Tennis Players Gluten Free .
ElseB replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A lot of people think Djokovic is on steroids and just using "gluten free" as a bogus way to explain his very rapid and sudden improvement in fitness levels. -
ARCHIVED Children With Constipation Before Diagnosis
ElseB replied to Mummyto3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Constipation was my predominant symptom before diagnosis, and still is the major symptom if I've been glutened. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
ElseB replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Too lazy to cook real food tonight, so its teff porridge. With leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. -
For the past month, I've been having weird loose stools that I can't figure out the cause of. For a few days in a row, I

ARCHIVED Find Any Strange New Things You Love Food Wise?
ElseB replied to Newtoitall's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Quinoa! I used to eat couscous, and then when I had to switch gluten free I started substituting quinoa in the recipes where I used to use couscous. And I discovered that I liked quinoa a lot better. I also like it for breakfast - I cook it in water, and then add milk, yogurt, cinnamon and raisins. Yum!
