  1. Don't assume that menu items are gluten free just because they might be labelled that way on the menu. A lot of restaurants don't really understand what gluten free means. i.e. they label french fries as gluten free, but the fries are cooked in the same fryer as the onion rings. Or, they cook gluten-free pasta in the same water as the gluten pasta. Or, they...
  2. I had absolutely NO symptoms before diagnosis, and very few now. I only have symptoms if I eat food with gluten (as opposed to CC). I never cheat - the glutening happens when I'm told something is gluten-free but it isn't. I'm quite sure I've been glutened more often than I realize. I find this really scary. I actually wish I was one of those people that...
  3. 1. Sex: Male or Female - Female 2. Age: 31 3. How long ago were you diagnosed with celiac disease? - 2 and a half years ago 4. Does anyone in your family have celiac disease? - No. But there is a history of other gastro diseases - sister has Crohn's Disease and mother has IBS. 5. How severe is your celiac disease? - I hate this question! Every Celiac...
  4. For me, it actually takes a few days for symptoms to kick in. I actually wish I was one of those people that immediately started vomiting so that I'd know right away! If its just a small dose (e.g. from cross contamination) I have a stomach ache anytime I eat, and that lasts for about a week. If its a bigger dose (i.e. I eat something with gluten as an ingredient...
  5. I was in France last summer and while I don't speak a lot of French, I was able to say "pas du ble" (no wheat). Unfortunately some waiters kept thinking I meant "pas du lait" (no milk)! I don't really think it was my French but rather that the idea of someone not being able to eat wheat was incredible to them!!! You're so right about people having no...
  6. If you're okay with corn, try Corn Thins. They're Australian, but we get them here in Canada (sorry, not sure where you are). They are delicious and have way more flavour than rice cakes. Think of popcorn, but in the form of a think ricecake!
  7. I just found out that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued recent recalls for 2 products I've been eating - King Soba noodles, and Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas (though I wasn't getting sick from them). In the case of the noodles, they were supposedly made in a dedicated factory. Is nothing safe? I feel like I can't even trust products that are...
  8. I'm not sure if anyone is still looking for an answer on this, but in September 2010 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently issued 2 recalls for Food for Life. It was the Wheat & Gluten Free Brown Rice Tortillas. While not the English Muffins, if there's a problem with one product, there may be with another...... Open Original Shared Link ...
  9. I just got back from France and went to the gluten-free restaurant in Paris. The food was AMAZING and such a relief to be able to eat out and not worry about being poisoned. I almost yelled at the waitress when she tried to take away the bowl of bread that I hadn't finished eating yet! I found France quite difficult - I don't speak French and even though...
  10. Fabulous, thanks!
  11. Is there anyone else in Canada that has used Imodium, and is it safe? I called the company (McNeil Consumer Healthcare) and they said that there's no gluten in the ingredients, but they can't guarantee that there hasn't been cross contamination. My problem is that I have asymptomic celiac, so even if I ingest gluten, there is no reaction. So if there was...
  12. Don't get too excited yet...the regulation is only "proposed". And given that our government has just ground to a halt because of the election call, nothing will happen for a long long time. And sadly, this is not a priority for Stephen Harper. Here's what it says on the Health Canada website: "Health Canada is publishing its proposed regulatory amendments...
  13. Just remembered another remedy - tetracycline. My sister used to use this. Get a prescription from your doctor for the capsules, and then empty the capsules into water and use it as a rinse. The powder doesn't dissolve in the water, so you have use it quickly after mixing or shaking. Only the powder form works for canker sores, not any other form of tetracycline...
  14. Are you currently taking any medications that could be causing them? I had a year of nasty canker sores (pre celiac diagnosis) many years back, and eventually discovered the cause was the birth control pills I was taking (Tricycline). I can relate to the pain and not being able to talk or eat - at one point I had a canker half an inch in diameter. My dentist...
  15. I've seen it on the gluten-free lists before too....my only concern was that all of the lists I"ve seen seemed to be from the US. I'm in Canada, and sometimes our food and drugs have different ingredients than whats available in the US.
  16. I was trying to confirm whether my birth control medication (Yasmin) was safe (I had always assumed it was but thought I should double-check) so I called the company. It was explained to me that gluten is made up of glutenin and gliadin, and it is only the gliadin that is "thought to" cause problems for celiacs. Yasmin contains glutenin (thought to not...
  17. I'm starting to think I have a fructose intolerance, likely from eating too many apples. I'm an asymptomatic celiac, but lately I've been having GI symptoms, and I've ruled out gluten and lactose as the culprits, through an elimination diet. Fruit is the only likely thing left. I recently spent 4 months backpacking around Australia, and apples were an easy...
  18. I was also asymptomatic, and still am (there's been a few accidental gluten ingestions with no reaction). My doctor tested me because I was taking too long to recover from a C.Difficile infection. My blood test was positive, as was obviously the biopsy. There's no Celiac Disease in my family, so it was a huge shock. I kept thinking, if I've got this disease...
  19. Is there anyone else out there with symtomless Celiac Disease? Prior to diagnosis as Celiac, and since diagnosis, I have absolutely no symptoms or reactions from consuming gluten. The post-diagnosis gluten ingestion was of course accidental. But my biggest problem is that while I try to eat gluten-free, I could be accidentally ingesting gluten through...
  20. Does anyone know of any safe over-the-counter allergy medications available in Canada? I've called the companies that make Aerius, Claritin and Reactine, and they all said that while there is no gluten in the ingredients, they can't guarantee its gluten-free because there could be cross-contamination in the factory.
  21. Pure rice flour would be gluten free. A lot of gluten-free products are made with rice flour. But as with everything, you have to be sure that hasn't been mixed with or contaminated by wheat flour (or any other gluten containing flour).
  22. I can relate completely!!! I'm semi-vegetarian (only eggs, fish and occasionally chicken). I used to love ethnic restaurants, especially thai, japanese and indian. Now I just find eating a chore, and am too afraid to go to any ethnic restaurants, because either there will be nothing on the menu thats safe, or the only safe thing won't be what I really want...
  23. Excellent questions, and welcome to the Celiac world. I was diagnosed 23 days ago, also without any symptoms. My doctor tested me after I was sick with c.difficile. I have also wondered how I would ever know if I ate gluten if I have no symptoms. I'm seeing the gastroenterologist tomorrow and already have the question on my list of questions, so I'll let...
  24. Relationships are definitely difficult with this disease. I never realized how intertwined food was with social life until I was diagnosed. I met a guy several months ago, he patiently waited for me as I kept cancelling our first date over and over again because I was too sick (from other things, not celiac). He's still around, but who knows for how long...
  25. Hey, I"m a newbie (17 days now), and I live and work in Toronto too! Where do you do most of your shopping? I find I have to shop at 3 or 4 stores just to find everything, and at a decent price. I also stock up on things whenever I'm out in Pickering, because the Loblaws and Bulk Barn in Pickering have tons of stuff - its gluten-free heaven! Also, do...
