  1. In addition to this, try not to focus on replicating things, but gluten free. For example, gluten free bread is expensive. So instead of putting meat between two pieces of bread, eat it on top of rice instead. I think one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was this (in relation to packed lunches): stop thinking about what you can put between bread and...
  2. True. Now that I think about it, beer is really the only thing that I keep looking for a perfect gluten free substitute. I don't eat much bread and when I do, I accept that it won't taste the same as real bread and I enjoy it for what it is. Rather than trying to recreate childhood meals and baked goods, I find different ways to get the same flavour. I've...
  3. At least it brings some excitement to Canberra...... Don't get me wrong, I love Australia and absolutely loved the architecture in Canberra and the way the city was so perfectly planned and laid out. But Canberra was sooooooo quiet. The city was dead after 5:00 and on weekends. But, I admit, I was only there for a week....
  4. How long have you been gluten free? I had my last real beer on January 30, 2008, the night before my biopsy. I had my first gluten-free beer a month later and thought it was disgusting. (I used to be a beer drinker) I recently tried that same beer again and thought it was good! I think after a while you forget was real beer tastes like and the gluten-free...
  5. Nope. Beer in a bottle is better!!! Have you tried Estrella Damm Daura? Its a spanish gluten-free beer thats actually made from barley with certain proteins removed. It tests at 6ppm. Some people say they still react, and others say its fine. I'm in the latter category. I found it at Whole Foods in Manhatten.
  6. No, but I"m curious why they make such a big deal about there being no sorghum in the beer. Do they think sorghum contains gluten??? Also, they should have done a bit more research because its not the first gluten free beer in a can. Nickel Brook comes in a can and has been out for more than a year. 7. Giblets = GROSS!!! Although my husband loves them so we make one gravy with and one without.
  8. Is there any way to change your member/profile name without setting up a whole new profile under a different name? I really don't like the name I chose when I joined years ago and want to change it....
  9. I also just use pasta sauce as pizza sauce. I usually make my own sauce, but if I"m too lazy I generally use Classico. If too runny for your tastes, you could add a bit of tomato paste to thicken it. Prego is gluten-free. Its a Campbells brand. Open Original Shared Link Classico's red pasta sauces are also gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link
  10. True! Though to be honest, I don't really care who I got it from. My mom felt horribly guilty after I was diagnosed but I tell her that I'm lucky to have such kind loving parents. I'd rather have bad genes and good parents, than good genes and bad parents!
  11. After I was diagnosed both of my parents got tested (blood test only, not genetic) and were negative. My dad then proudly declared, "well, she didn't get it from me!" Nice try dad! He may have been born in Africa but his roots are 100% European so we can't rule out that side of the family!
  12. I'm Canadian. My mom was born in Northern Ireland, and my dad in what is now Zambia, and they came to Canada after many years in South Africa. My mom's family goes back many generations in Northern Ireland but my dad's family has been quite nomatic. Before Zambia it was South Africa, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, England, and originally France. We have family...
  13. Depends what country you're in! Just to make things extra confusing for us Celiacs every country has different rules! Here in Canada, there are new labelling rules coming into force next year that require plain language labels that clearly identify priority allergens, gluten sources and sulphites. The only problem is that the rules only address ingredients...
  14. When you travel, you pack more food than clothes!
  15. Do you get Rice Works chips where you are? If so, the Parmesan flavour remind me a lot of Doritos. They're a good substitute, and they're definitely gluten free.
  16. I always take longer to heal. My husband and I can catch the same thing and he'll be sick for 1-2 days and I'm sick for 2-3 weeks, with the exact same virus. We both got a nasty stomach flu last winter and he had D for one day, and I had D and vomiting for a week, and then felt horrible for another 2 weeks. Same thing happened this summer when we got the...
  17. I too had no problem with my iron before I was diagnosed, which is weird, since for so many people its a diagnosis of anemia that leads to the discovery of Celiac!
  18. Have you had your iron levels checked? After going gluten free I started having a similar problem. The nausea was usually part of a progression of symptoms that led to fainting or almost fainting. If I sat down, I"d be okay. The other symptoms were getting really hot, blurred vision and trouble hearing. The doctor tested my iron level and it was really really...
  19. Kids have to do science projects in first grade? wow! I think I was just figuring out how to read then.... 4) A 5) C I debated filling out this survey because from what I've read on this forum, my case is a bit of an anomaly. I went from perfectly healthly, to deathly ill with C.Difficile, to Celiac Diagnosis, to healthy again (though perhaps not...
  20. I've never been on a cruise, but I've heard the same thing. In fact, I've never heard anything BUT positive experiences on cruises.
  21. If in Canada, I would suggest alerting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. My understanding is that such labelling would be considered inconsistent with the spirit of the new labelling requirements.
  22. I use it in muffins or anything else where there's a lot of other ingredients to hide the taste. We made the mistake recently of using it for molton chocolate cakes and it was terrible and disgusting! Tasted beany.
  23. My understanding was always that wheat based glucose is so highly refined that there isn't enough gluten left to be harmful. I found a European Food Safety Authority article that is a bit less definitive (and is making me second guess my past consumption of wheat based glucose!): For coeliac disease, assessment of the evidence produced including a...
  24. I love the sweet potato chips! But I eat oats on a daily basis without any problems....
  25. When I was first diagnosed I created a spreadsheet to track all of my gluten-free purchases, prices, and comparative gluten food (I used the cheapest gluten food so as to get the biggest differential). But then I realized I made too much money to claim anything. It might be worth if if you have other medical expenses and can just add the gluten-free expenses...
