  1. This may already be discussed somewhere on this forum but I honestly do not have the time to search at the moment. I am hopeful that someone might point out the appropriate thread if one does exist. My question, sort of a poll (I have not read how to set up an official poll): Does current research suggest what proportion of gluten intolerant folks...
  2. You know, I have not been in there since I was diagnosed, but I did read in restaurant listing that the chain is celiac friendly. And I noticed that at least one of the bbq sauces (Texas Pit) is listed as gluten free. I found it labeled as such at my grocery store as well. Check them out and let us know!
  3. From what I understand, it is only the Pier 49 in downtown SLC. The owner has a family member who was diagnosed with celiac disease (and who operates the gluten-free Against the Grain store in Taylorsville I believe. I wonder if Pier 49 could push that crust to all the franchises...CCM
  4. After a miserable night, having experimenting with whether I might be able to tolerate small amounts of nightshades, my answer is no--at least not with respect to potatoes, and most likely not with tomatoes or peppers either. I am only recently into this gluten-free lifestyle a few months, it never occurred to me when I started that I would have to cut out...
  5. As someone posted in the PR section on celiac disease, the Salt Lake Tribune printed an article yesterday on celiac disease that included dining options throughout the Salt Lake valley. Here is the link: Open Original Shared Link
  6. Thanks so much for that link to the old thread and the lead on the Yahoo group. I had not come across that one before. It looks like I have finally found the right place to learn a lot more about the issue...like, what exactly is an oxalate in the first place? I have some serious catching up to do on the topic. Oh well, it will have to wait until after...
  7. I am so glad that you all have brought this problem back up. I have been trying to figure this out for several weeks and all the related threads on this forum seemed old. After having gone gluten-free and CF since the start of the year, I find that I also have a problem with nightshades. In small doses tolerable but a sizable portion of tomato sauce or potatoes...
  8. I am going to be in CT this summer visiting family. Would you mind sharing the name/location of your wonderful Chinese restaurant? I am salivating as I think about it!
  9. I am new to this gluten-free thing, but from what I understand from gluten-free friends, there are a lot of Indian and Thai dishes that can be made gluten-free and dairy-free. You might check on the food network or epicurious web sites..some of them let you do more advanced searches where you can opt out of allergy foods.
  10. Keep working on it! If you think a toddler is tiring, just wait until the "why?" phase starts and all the questions, and school and homework! It has just been exhausting over the past year. To hear myself say, "Honey, why don't you watch TV for a little bit; Mommy needs to take a nap." That was the turning point where I knew something was just very wrong...
  11. Thanks. That pretty much confirms what I have been thinking.
  12. Please, please don't accept my personal experience as the way it is going to go for you. It is just what I seem to have experienced and I really have no idea whether anyone else has had it go this way. I just read that physical traumas do act as some kind of trigger. And with each pregnancy I got worse. I am now going through these tests because I did not...
  13. Need a little feedback. I am new to this board and finding information very helpful. I had an anti-endomysial test done in July 07, negative. I had a biopsy done anyway, Nov 07, negative. I had food allergy tests, Jan 08, negative. I am intolerant of gluten and possibly dairy by way of elimination dieting since the beginning of this year. There has...
  14. I have been going through something similar to your case. Fifteen years ago, when I first started having reactions to foods, I was in the midst of recovering from a chemical exposure that occurred on campus at a very well known east coast college. It seemed that my body started to reject whatever was in my system at the time the chemicals were, the typical...
  15. Thanks for the feedback. I am guessing I could fall into that category of folks whose gluten intolerance reactions occur elsewhere than their villi. I deal with excessive gas intestinally, but that's it. The rest is my joints, bones, muscles, mood, reproductive tract, as well as fatigue and brain fog (so bad that I now finally understand why I was unable...
  16. I noticed you are from CT. I grew up there and will be heading back this summer to visit family, the first time visiting on a gluten-free diet. Are there any active local groups there (preferably in the New Haven area) that I could get in touch with regarding places to shop for food, restaurants, etc.? I am trying to get as much info on gluten intolerance...
  17. I cheat too! In fact, I am online after having just finished a hot cocoa and Xmas cookies I had hidden in the back of the freezer. It is bittersweet. I have been transitioning to a gluten-free diet this month, and in doing so discovered that I also have a problem with dairy. I was so down about it this afternoon that I felt I needed a private moment with...
  18. I called the Celiac Hotline at the Univ of Chicago to ask about a study I saw described on Celiac Disease Research Center that is examining whether gluten intolerance should be considered a precursor to celiac disease rather than an independent condition. What do folks on this forum know of this? I am guessing I am gluten intolerant (and dairy) because...
  19. Ok, the fact that my email text is being translated into something unintended when published is just not right. Thanks for the replies on the dairy/gluten connection. CCM
  20. Sorry to hear about the dining dilemma. I guess I will be experiencing a few of those myself this coming year. I am just trying to go gluten-free and finding that I am also somewhat sensitive to dairy. I am curious as to some something in your sign-off: what is the Lame Advertisement test you list? And do you know why there so many folks in this forum...
  21. In July 2007, I had a blood test (anti-endomysial? spelling) done which came back negative. I was unable to schedule an endoscopy until the week after Thanksgiving, and I knew I had to stay on wheat until the biopsies were done. So I did, and really did it up...I couldn't wait for the test to be done so I could stop eating wheat...that's how terrible I felt...
  22. Could you please explain more about things other than celiac that can cause gluten intolerance? I would love to find out more. My blood work biopsies were negative, but the gluten-free diet makes me feel so much better. Could it be something other than celiac?
  23. I do have a past history of chemical sensitivity so that part would not surprise me, but the gluten sensitivity symptoms and the fact that I respond positively to a gluten free diet is all new to me. I am wondering if the chemical sensitivity is just the trigger my body needs to start me down that path. I also have not paid much attention to determining my...
  24. I am a newbie to this, please point me in the right direction if answers on this topic already exist. I have been dealing with celiac symptoms over the past year. My blood work and endoscopy came up negative; however, all my symptoms say "yes." Going gluten-free makes me feel much better. I am transitioning to that now, however, my GI doc suggested organic...
  25. I agree with the above comments to cut out dairy. My son went through the same thing, as soon as I stopped nursing and started formula at 7 months. Nine ear infections later we had tubes put in. Over the course of that time it turns out he also handled dairy very poorly. The tubes grew out, he is for the most part lactose free. Now almost 7 years old, we...
