  1. Wow!! My jaw dropped as I was reading your post, gfpaperdoll! I have not done the research needed on the genetic issues of celiac yet. I had no idea that particular genes predisposes a person to specific GI symptoms or to neurological symptoms. I guess I would really like to learn more about the differences between the research being done in the US and...
  2. I used aloe for a while before I went gluten-free, I stopped because I wasn't sure if it was helping or hurting long term, and I was unable to determine if the brand I used was gluten-free. I found that it did help soothe my digestive system, helped with my reflux, and since I was always constipated and not with D, that it was useful to take everyday. I added...
  3. Thanks so much for this thread! I had no idea there were connections being made between these two diseases. I think that my grandmother died from MM when I was a young child. I am going to have to go back and check. That link to Cancer Compass is really good.
  4. Non-celiac gluten intolerance is more likely to cause damage to the nervous system and brain. (Quote from earlier post) Yes, I also would like to know who or where I can read specifically about non-celiac gluten intolerance. My celiac blood test and biopsy were negative, but the diet is exactly what I need and my symptoms are more nervous system...
  5. Awesome! I will be traveling through Amherst this summer and need to check it out! Thanks for the info!
  6. I came across two cook books at the library you might check out. You would need to make gluten substitutions for one of them, but the recipes seem interesting and do not tend to rely too heavily on rice/bean/Mexican meals which my family tires of. I have not used either of them enough yet to make a recommendation, but the recipes do read/appear nicely: ...

    ARCHIVED At A Loss

I find this thread very useful because I am dealing with the same kind of joint pain related to food intolerances. Was tested for rheumatoid arthritis (neg). I don't really notice it with gluten, more so other foods: dairy and nightshades. I know everybody's sensitive in different ways, but I really did not understand that one of my old standby's has been...
  8. Just to complicate matters, I had my decaf (no milk, one/two tsp sugar) and felt achey and cranky for hours yesterday. Yet later in the afternoon I had full strength mug of English Breakfast tea (no milk, some sugar) and no bad reactions at all. This is my first clue that maybe it has nothing to do with the caffeine. A registered dietician told me to switch...
  9. I really like Banana Boat too. A while ago, Consumer Reports testing indicated it was also the most effective in retaining its SPF ratings for the longest period of time after application. We have never reacted to it, well I have not been gluten free and used it yet, so I guess there is always the chance that I may unmask some new found reaction to it. Anyway...
  10. Wish I had some names of places for you, I am coming home to the New Haven/Danbury area in June and need to find some places as well. I have seen a few names in threads here, just search under Connecticut. I believe the local support group out of New Haven (or Yale Univerity) has a restaurant guide on its website. CT is so small I am sure it must cover other...
  11. I find that is a real problem as well. I just looked through my cupboards and could find barely anything that was labeled both gluten-free and organic, except for Food Merchants Brand precooked polenta (in the plastic tube sleeve). I have just compromised and figured as long as I could find gluten-free, dairy free and potato free foods (that last one makes...
  12. I totally hear you, Jitters! That is my problem too. Have been gluten-free since Jan 08 (aside from all the mistakes and slipups we newbies make), then discovered dairy was a problem. Started drinking coffee black, but it seems any decent amount of caffeine from a regular cup of coffee just makes me feel as though my whole nervous system is having a bad reaction...
  13. Interesting...thanks for the feedback. I would have thought that a rotation diet would make things easier on the digestive system.
  14. Hey, sorry I have not been on the forum in a week or so. I have read in Michael Fowler's book that sweet potatoes and yams are not part of the nightshade family. The nightshade family of plants is fairly big, I guess, but of the plants that we eat, only these are of concern: potato, tomato, most peppers, and eggplant. These "fruits" of the plant go from...
  15. I just wanted to add that at least for me, gluten has turned out to be not the only source of brain fog. Dairy products and nightshades produce the same effect (in addition to other symptoms). But I was not aware of this until I went gluten-free at the start of this year. I am really psyched to read more of the links that have been posted on this thread...
  16. Wow, that does sound like scary stuff! So sorry to hear about your reactions. I have tried smaller amounts of potatoes and tomatoes and still get reactions, just not as bad. I read (I think) in that book I mentioned earlier in this thread that apparently vine ripened tomatoes are supposed to have less of the toxin that causes reactions (it is converted to...
  17. I am struggling with this diagnosis thing myself. Anti-endyomisial blood test and intestinal biopsy were negative. Diet is doing wonders. But new food sensitivities have developed. And doctors are running a full autoimmune workup leaning toward possible rheumatoid arthritis. Somewhere I read on this forum that there may be a host of other conditions for which...
  18. I am so glad this thread got started. I am relatively new to all this as well, and sometimes trying to sift through all the old threads can be overwhelming. I went gluten free at the start of the year, then determined that dairy, potatoes and tomatoes (in some quantity or brand, or something) also bother me quite a bit. I have come across two cook books...
  19. I feel the same way. My blood tests and biopsies were negative, as were allergy tests, but the diet is right on for me. My doctor uses the term gluten sensitive because the "true" diagnosis requires a positive test. I agree that it is really a spectrum we are all on. Who knows...in five years, being gluten sensitive might just be officially recognized as...
  20. Yes, my husband and I were both studying Classical Archeology, we met on a dig, believe it or not, and because one of us was always there for study, it became impossible to plan a wedding back in the states. So we brought our family and friends there and were married in Monemvasia. I could go on and on but it is probably best to move it to a "Greece" thread...
  21. You may also check out Boar's Head, which carries a variety of gluten free ham deli products. It's quite possible that it will sell Easter hams labeled gluten free.

  23. Yes, grated cheese products contain wheat flour to prevent sticking, but you can find clearly labeled, which makes it easier to avoid.
  24. Thanks for bringing up the topic of cheese...really one of my favorite foods and now off limits for me, at least temporarily. I don't know if it's lactose or casein intolerance but I feel so lousy that I am really not ready to get sick again just to find out. Trying to let myself heal a bit longer. I did notice the other day while shopping for my family...
  25. I am wondering something similar related to changes in crop production, whether genetically modified seeds or agricultural pesticides/herbicides are playing any role in people's conditions. I just don't understand why so many of have not only a gluten intolerance but multiple food sensitivities. Or why kids who used to outgrow their allergies are no longer...
