ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Absolutely Laurie - the grains are so addictive that's the problem. I did really well on both the original low-carb I followed and later on the Atkins until I started to reintroduce the carbs - then I couldn't stop. I have to admit that I have not been as disciplined on the SCD as I wish I had been - but then I have always admitted that ............ -
My husband had this a few times prior to going gluten-free. It was a bit frightening although the Doctor could find nothing wrong. He would get the racing heart and feel faint and dizzy and somewhat breathless for a while. I thought he was going to end up in Hospital more than once. I have to say that since we have been gluten-free he has not had...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Cocoa is also high in copper which may well explain why those whose diets revolve around it like the Mayans have an orange tinge to their skin! I found this comment on Naomi Devlins' blog which may help - "This definitely couldn't be made SCD because chocolate and cocoa are considered illegal due to the carbohydrate content. Even 85% cocoa content... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I agree with Rinne - Casein is one of the 'big 4' most common intolerances and it can contribute to, and keep going, a lot of damage. The article by Dogtor J covers that too. He points out that like gluten (glue-ten), casein (& soy & corn) is also used to make glue. Whilst goats milk contains S1 Beta casein which is easier to digest, cows milk... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, and as Dogtor J says - viruses can affect genes. Apparently that is what they do. So the fact that we have a genetic marker for something may indicate not that we have inherited it, but that it has been acquired at some point. The key is to give the immune system the tools to be able to control and overpower these things. Weak immune systems... -

Gadgetgirl and Rinne, thanks so much for posting the link to Dogtor J's site. What a fantastic resource. I had not come across that one. What sense he speaks! I am wending my way through 'The Answer' and what an answer it is. It's all out there if we look for it hard enough............... -

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I like the use of the word 'likely', it's a bit like 'probably'. It's a kind of 'hedging the bets' thing. This is only my opinion, but I think that sometimes the 'genetic' thing can be a bit of a red herring. After all, there are a lot of people who have the 'genetic' markers for Celiac yet who never develop the disease, and there are others who display... -

A few interesting links - Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link and this one - it's a bit of a tome but well worth the read. Kind of sums up why we (and probably most people) are better off following the SCD or similar low-carb Paleo-type diet. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Gentleheart - welcome to the thread. I couldn't have dairy, tolerate eggs or nuts and soy when I first started the diet. Within a few weeks I was able to eat eggs as long as they were well cooked and am ok with them now in any form. Nuts have gradually become easier to digest. I can now cope with a little dairy although too much gives me C, and soy... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Chicken or egg - hmm, well maybe the chicken is more toxic than the egg! Pells, sorry to hear about your stressful situation. I hope things resolve ok for you. I am pretty laid-back and don't normally tend to worry or stress - maybe its there subconsciously but I am not aware of it. Hasn't stopped me getting Leaky Gut, a toxic body, Candida infestations... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Julie-Anne. You are so right about carbs often preventing healing. That is what I have come to realise. Rinne - you may well be right about Mercury - even if it doesn't cause it, it undoubtedly contributes in some way. At the end of the day, having particles of the second most toxic metal known to man in your mouth can't be particularly beneficial... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi All. Good to see the thread pick up again......... I have been reading up quite a bit about blood sugar. That is, and has been a problem for me for years - I used to get a lot of hypos when I was younger then became diabetic when I hit 40. The BS problems went hand-in-hand with the carb intolerance and I was told years ago to eat low-carb, but when... -
ARCHIVED Digesting Vegetables... (may Be Gross)
AliB replied to coldnight's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I couldn't digest fruits and veg very well at all for a long time - gradually I had to avoid the different fruits until I was pretty much down to bananas and nothing else - raw veg was also very problematic although cooked was ok. Finally my digestion collapsed completely and I could hardly eat anything without getting some kind of reaction. I had gone... -
ARCHIVED Has A Dietician Been Helpful To Anyone?
AliB replied to coldnight's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
There are different things you can try but quite a few of us who have been in a similar situation of being unable to eat hardly anything without getting some kind of reaction have been following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) with some success as it removes the commonly troublesome foods and focuses on good wholesome foods that encourage healing. It... -
ARCHIVED Have Been Trying 80/10/10 Diet With Success
AliB replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I started to look into Raw I joined a forum and quite a few on there advised against the 80/10/10. I do believe that the fat and protein ratio needs to be higher than that, but the carbs in fruit and veg are nothing like as problematic as the carbs from grains and starches. I find that the smoothies do put my blood sugar up a bit, but nothing like... -
ARCHIVED Have Been Trying 80/10/10 Diet With Success
AliB replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi 'Bully'. I have adjusted my diet to try and included more raw foods - quite often I tend to make a big jug of smoothie with fruit and veg and that will last me for breakfast and sometimes lunch too! I did have an experimental 2 or 3 days where I just had raw food with a little protein in the form of gravlax salmon and I have to say that for the first... -
Well, you could be right - it might not actually be the issue - there are so many things that we can potentially be intolerant of, but dairy is certainly a contender. When I was totally dairy-free (I can tolerate a little now my gut has healed somewhat) I had to avoid it completely or even a small amount would bung me up which was a sure sign it wasn't...

Thanks Bell for your support. As far as the references to the SCD are concerned I have merely been trying to pass on what was given to me and for which I am exceedingly grateful. I came to this site as a raw gluten-free 'recruit' after gluten-free initially removed the awful stomach pain and diarrhea, but frustrated because my digestion could still not...

Since I have been cutting the carbs, cutting the junk, cutting the sugar, cutting the dairy and concentrating on good natural foods supplemented with plain live yogurt and/or probiotics, whilst everyone around me has been dropping like flies, amazingly, although I have normally always caught everything going, this year it has passed me by. My husband has...

Not sure Georgie what you mean by the 'RH Diet' but it does sound like a 'free-choice' low-carb regime. Even Protein Power has the same option, either the 'Hedonistic' type, the 'Dilletante' type or the 'Puritan' type depending on how disciplined you need, or want, to be. I have no choice but to be 'Puritan' - very low carb, as I just can't tolerate it...

Thanks Nancy - yes Blood Sugar 101 has been mentioned a couple times in this thread. I did notice that 'Protein Power' by Michael and Mary Dan Eades was mentioned on that site. I just found my copy that had been packed in a box for the last 5 years and have been reading through it again. Oh boy, do they speak a lot of sense. One thing I take a bit...

Not sure I would have worded it quite like that but I know what Chaty was getting at - she is referring to the high-sugar, high-carb, highly processed junk that people are constantly consuming as 'toxic waste'. It is the constant barrage of high carbohydrate against the body and the insulin receptors - the higher the level of insulin in the body, the less...

I know what you mean about the tightness in the back and stomach - I get a similar thing - almost a pain but not quite - although it is gradually improving since I have been on the SCD and as long as I keep those troublesome carbs very low. I suspect that it is the poor old Pancreas trying desperately to pump out enough insulin to bring the BS back down...

ARCHIVED Help With Elimination Diet...
AliB replied to carsie252's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Rich. Welcome to the Forum. There are several different elimination diets around - the Failsafe Diet is one. Quite a few of us on here who have similar food intolerance issues are following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and gaining good results. As it seems that as quite a lot of the foods you are having problems with are not consumed on...
