It may well be because so many of us can't tolerate carbs in general - it seems that we may be lacking, possibly due to the gut damage or other factors, enough of the correct enzymes to be able to break it down properly. Apparently, improperly digested or undigested carbohydrates are yummy food for yeasts and other pathogens and the toxins they give off...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Fresh greens from your garden - yum. I really have to try and find some way to get some steps in so we can get up on top of the bank in our garden and make a veg patch up there somehow. It is such a waste of good ground. You may well be right about the lactic, but it could perhaps also be because the olives were old and had maybe gone a bit rancid? ... -
ARCHIVED Where Do You Draw The Line?
AliB replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Jason, it is interesting that you have mentioned taking digestive enzymes. That is my current area of research as i am sure that for many of us, most of our intolerances and sensitivities occur because we lack the enzymes needed to digest certain foods. Some of us are carb intolerant, some protein or fat intolerant and some can't cope with any of them... -
ARCHIVED Reintroducing Other Foods

It is home-made yogurt cultured for 24 hours rather than the 6 - 8 hours that commercial yogurt is usually cultured for. The reason for the long culturing is that then most, if not all of the lactose gets pre-digested by the bacteria before you eat it, the casein structure is changed into a form that is more easily digestible, and you also get a much greater... -
ARCHIVED Reintroducing Other Foods

I would second Mushroom's comment on starting slowly. The problem with a lot of foods is a lack of enzymes to digest them and many of those are produced in the gut. A damaged gut will have difficulty producing them which results in our inability to digest properly. The thing is it is a chicken and egg situation. Is it the lack of enzymes resulting in... -

My only comment on that, according to what I have (now) read , is not to put the enzymes onto very hot food as anything greater than about 110 degrees F will apparently deactivate or 'kill' them. We don't have the brands available here that you do so I am going to try the Vega range and see if they will be better. -

Yup, I second that - stupid restaurant. We went out for a meal on Saturday and I pointed out to the waiter that so many people have to be gluten-free these days they have a responsibility to label the menu to that extent. They label 'V' for vegetarian for those who through choice prefer not to eat meat, yet don't label meals gluten-free for those who need... -

Thanks Jan. I'm still getting it out of my system . I suspect it may well have been something in the tablets - the dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, the pepsin extract (contains milk) or even the ox bile (since when do oxen eat a roast dinner??). My dodgy stomach definitely coincided with the taking of the tablets so... -

I suppose that the 'spit' test can be a bit hit or miss, but my opinion would be that it is reasonably suggestive if it comes back positive. If you do it first thing in the morning before you have put any other substance in the mouth and after the beasties have had all night to breed, then the white stuff is quite likely to be a strong indicator. People... -
Hi Lovey. do you get the dizzy spells at certain times of the day? After meals? How often? Even after going G and dairy-free and for about 5 or 6 months into the SCD I would still get very lightheaded around 11.30/midnight most evenings. I would go clammy too, but just the other day I realised that I hadn't been getting that for some time as my gut...

I did come across that point about fructose malabsorption but it is not necessarily the same in all people (just shows that not all information on the net is correct!). There are two types - hereditary fructosemia which is caused by a deficiency of liver enzymes, but ordinary fructose malabsorption is due to a lack of enzymes in the enterocytes due to... -

I have had a book come through this morning from Amazon - Enzymes for health and healing by Ellen W Cutler. It is such an eye-opener. I would recommend anyone to have a read of ot if you can get hold of it either through your library or from the net. It makes such sense. She mentions that the power of enzymes is well-documented within Medical circles... -

Hi 'Nmr'. Welcome to the thread. And well done for giving the diet a go. You obviously are having great difficulty even with SCD complaint foods so it must be pretty difficult. Are you taking any digestive enzymes? There are a few pages on Dr Myhill's site that are applicable but I thought this one was interesting. I am just doing this myself... -

Ginkgo Biloba is supposed to help memory, but have you suggested they try dropping gluten to see if it helps??? That one thing has made such a difference to my husband - he is a different person - the black depression and the brain-fog is history............. I have a funny story about the Gingko - friend of ours who suffers with memory problems had... -

As I am in the UK I am not sure which brands available in the States would be compliant so perhaps someone else could answer that for me. Generally it would be good to get some with Betaine HCL and Pepsin as that can boost the acid level which is often low in those of us with gut issues. Other enzymes are things like Amylase to help carb digestion, Protease... -

Hi Whitney - just wondering, are you taking any digestive enzymes? Because your digestion has been under duress for quite a while and has not been able to digest properly, it may be worth trying to see if they help. I would say that mine are better even when I take just a couple of tablets a day. Start gradually though if you do decide to try. I know... -

Dawn, you could have pathogens in your stomach as the acid has been kept low and possibly not enough to kill them - they would be pretty uncomfortable and not very happy and could well be causing a bit of inflammation down there. You could try the digestive enzymes but start gradually, maybe half a tablet and see how you go - you can always increase it.... -

Well done you! Did you need to lose the 10 pounds? Wish I could! I'm down by 2 but I have been piggy this evening so will probably have put it back on tomorrow! I had a problem with hot feet - I used to have to stick them out of the bed all night, but they have been fine since I have been on the SCD! I don't miss that or the restless legs, or the dandruff... -

Are you still getting neuro symptoms even though you are on the SCD? Without knowing what your symptoms would usually be it is difficult to understand what if anything, is likely to help. Elaine spoke about digestive issues because that was her only field of expertise - up to the time she died she had not had too much experience of the diets' benefit... -

That's fantastic. My husbands' Fibro is better when I can keep him on SCD food (not often) although being gluten-free has helped too. Daft isn't it - I have been on it for the last 10 months and haven't dropped an ounce yet others lose it without even trying! Having a bit more fat as suggested may help - just upping the calorie content generally... -

As far as the cholesterol issue is concerned (and forgive me if I have already posted about this - I really can't keep up with myself sometimes! ). but I watched a TV program a year or so ago about 2 young Docs (twins) who went to different places to try out different diets and investigate them. This one prog I watched had the bros go to the eastern... -

Hi Whitney - I would imagine she is talking about the basic muffins which are made with either walnut, almond, pecan or hazelnut flour - the recipe for which and variations is in the BTVC book (p 97-99), although there are plenty of nut muffin recipes out there - I posted a banana one on the recipe thread. I didn't cope with the nuts as well as I would hope... -
It may be that the damage to your intestines is preventing the formation of or access to, possibly due to an excess of mucous, the particular enzymes needed to digest the onion family. It may not be that it is the onions that are causing the problem but they are an inadvertent victim in the process. Do you get any other types of reaction to any other...

Hi Whitney - well done for jumping in to the diet - I hope it works as well for you as it has for those of us who have, and still are, benefitting from it. Elaine devoted a page to C - not sure if you have come across it. Open Original Shared Link I am a little confused - if C is your primary problem, how do you know that dairy isn't causing it or...
