  1. I usually know right away. I get this weird burning/choking/tickle kind of feeling in my throat...... immediately after ingesting..... Karen
  2. Their english muffins and nice and fluffy and can double as hamburger buns..... Karen
  3. Hi Debbie, Boy, do I know how you feel. My 6 yr old daughter just won't grow either!!! Although she doesn't have celiac (yet, I had her tested about 1 yr ago), she has always been in the lowest 10th percentile from birth and still is in the lowest 10th percentile. Her pediatrician says he is not too worried though - he would worry if she were in the...
  4. Richard, That is quite an interesting remedy for you indeed! I can't say that I have ever had a Martini though...... not really a gin lover! I usually just stick to white wine now. It seems to be the easiest. Although, I can remember when I first started going gluten free, I was devastated because I could no longer have my favourite drink....
  5. Hey Lisa, can you come up here and cook for me???? Seriously, with four kids, including 4 yr old twin boys, cooking meals like that ain't gonna happen!! That sounds like a dream dinner to me!!!! LOL! Karen
  6. Hey, Michelle, I'm really feeling old and "out of the loop",........ What does LDS stand for? At first reading, I thought: "What??? They want an LSD daughter??????" Karen
  7. If you are going to put on frosting, make sure it is Duncan Hines, not Betty Crocker. Betty Crocker has wheat in it...... Also, when I moved out of Toronto into the burbs in January, I couldn't find gluten free foods anywhere here. I went to the manager at the local A&P, and explained that I was looking for gluten free food, he said they didn't have...
  8. See, gluten free ain't all that bad, right?? Don't worry, the longer you are gluten free, the easier it gets until you can't even remember what life was like before being gluten free. It becomes second nature to you...... Have you checked out all your medications, shampoos, vitamins, make-up etc? Gluten is quite often hidden in there too........
  9. Don't worry Lisa, you are doing just fine!!!!! Karen
  10. Oh, Oh, here's another one!!! The first thing you do when you hear company is coming over is go check the toilets to make sure they are clean underneath the toilet seat!! Karen
  11. That reminds me of a commercial that used to be on here in Canada. It is one of our "Part of our Heritage" series of commercials. It had a woman who always smelled burnt toast just before a seizure came on, and in the commercial it showed a Canadian brain surgeon operating on her brain and touching different parts of her brain until she identified that...
  12. I am the queen of aches and pains..... It is just something that I live with, some days are worse than others..... I am 42, and have had many, many years of damage though, so that could be a factor...... Karen
  13. Linda, If you live in Canada, do you have any of the Loblaws Superstores close to you? They usually have a whole gluten free aisle and also all the gluten-free breads, etc. in a special frozen section....... Good Luck! Karen
  14. Also, thought this might be interesting....... Along the same lines...... Open Original Shared Link Karen
  15. I'm the first to admit that I definitely have the Irish temper...... fly off the handle one minute, forgotten the next minute...... I am wondering if we have discovered the reason behind the "famous Irish temper"....... After all, celiac disease is common in Irish ancestry. Same can be said for Italians too, who can be known to be hot-blooded/hot-tempered...
  16. Hi! I am from the GTA area (Durham). Welcome to the board! How old are you? Karen
  17. One thing I would think would be imperative would be to go and buy a little cheap $10.00 toaster. The English love their toast in the morning, don't they? Also, ask them before they come over what kind of jam, butter/margarine, condiments, etc. they like and have them already when they arrive. You can use this list to make sure you choose gluten-free brands...
  18. Sounds like your husband wants to be the "good parent" while you have to take on the role of being the "bad parent" because you have to lay down the law. This type of behaviour by your husband is only going to cause your son to develop favourtism, and it is not healthy (not only from a celiac standpoint, but from a father/son vs. mother/son relationship...
  19. Hi Tracy, I can't give any advice really, just some support! I am the celiac in the family. So far, all my four children have escaped the disease. But what I can tell you is that when I am glutened, my temper flares like you wouldn't believe. I LOSE IT!!!! Also, another thing I notice, and anyone who wants to ring in here with possible...
  20. Hi Dan! Welcome to the board! Yep, they put gluten in the darndest places, eh? It could be incredibly frustrating, that's for sure...... Your symptoms sound like gluten reactions. Many people react differently, some people don't react at all. For some people, they are asymptomatic. Personally, I think there are pro's and con's to both worlds...
  21. Sometimes, I think whoever wrote that book "Men are from Mars, Women from Venus" (or something along those lines.....), had incredible insight into the male psyche. I have been celiac for years now, but hubby brings home some Granny brand butter tarts from the supermarket, and he bought the "club pack" version, LOTS of butter tarts. He says, "You can...
  22. Now that's quite the dinner conversation!!!! Nobody lost their appetite? You must have some pretty loyal friends!!!!! Karen
  23. I don't think that just because someone is a celebrity, they forfeit the right to have their health issues kept private. These people are human beings with fears, insecurities, feelings, hopes, dreams and nightmares just like the rest of us. We ourselves cherish the fact that we get to choose who we do and don't tell about this disease. Discussing it with...
  24. I will know a lot more after today, she goes to see my gastro today. I know he is doing the bloodwork today but I don't know whether he will automatically schedule an endo or wait until bloodwork..... Thanks! Karen
  25. Hi Guys! My sister just called. She is going through numerous tests. She goes this Thursday to a GI specialist and will be getting the blookwork done for celiac disease. So far the tests she has had shows she has a hiatus hernia and an enlarged spleen. I know hiatus hernia could be common in celiacs but what could cause an enlarged spleen? Thanks...
