  1. Hey there! My daughter, Analise MAE, was diagnosed with no symptoms (or so we thought). Her little sister got really sick and it was celiac. We all got tested after the little one's diagnosis. Analise was very celiac. Her scope showed lots of damage and she had already acquired another auto-immune disease. We never would have known if her little sister did...
  2. We often visit that chain and are very pleased - especially when traveling. They have a GIG menu and are very helpful - we had them cook our own pasta, too. All good experiences. They listen to us about not using their grill (we prefer pans) and not having dairy, too. I often speak to the manager before ordering and have fantastic experiences this way. Wishing...
  3. Before going gluten free, my 7 year old daughter used to complain about loud buzzing in her ear(s). Sometimes it was one, sometimes both. She says that it went away since gluten free. She used to hit her head trying to get it to stop (that never worked!!)
  4. My daughter was diagnosed immediately before her 3rd birthday. Her body had quit functioning - distended belly and all. Once gluten-free, she had energy again within days. By the time a month went by, her speech started to improve a little. She was diagnosed in February and she is now looking great - growing, shiny hair, no belly, talking like she never has...
  5. I forgot to mention Papa Joe's in Rochester. For their location, look them up online or phone book. I have only been there once. They had a nice selection, but were more costly than Whole Foods.
  6. We have a lot of sources near us. Welcome to the group! I am over in Ortonville, MI - not too far from you. You may want to check out the Tri-County Celiac support group at www.tccsg.com. They meet a little far from us, so I have yet to go to a meeting - I just enjoy the newsletter and the annual food fair. You have a health food store on Rochester Rd....
  7. I have learned so much from all of your postings and appreciate them. I feel strongly that my child will continue to heal - she has done incredibly well after just 4 months gluten free. We'll knock this candida out of her system (whether it be for a little while or over and over again ) I see clearly now - with both of my girls recovering so quickly...
  8. Thank you for this latest response. I actually had a hard time sleeping last night - thinking about what is "right" for me to do with her. She has no idea about the candida and I hope to keep it that way - she has sooo many other things on her plate! She knows about the celiac and EE. I will do more research. I also plan to call our GI doctor to get the ...
  9. Thank you sooo much! I love all of the advice. I hate to have to take away fruit and sugar from her, but I see the reason to..... I was thrilled to hear about Stevia and the non-dairy probiotics. I have my younger celiac daughter on probiotics and have wondered what to do for my elder one. Thanks! I think that I will give her a chance to adjust to school...
  10. Than you for the tips! She is allergic to coconut. I heard that Stevia has coconut in it??? I will try to eep her sugars to a minimum. Anyone hear of long term consequences to candida if showing no signs other than itching?
  11. My daughter is 7 years old (soon to be a second grader). She was diagnosed Celiac in April and has severe food allergies (they think it is EE) to legumes, dairy, squash, grains, corn, carrots, sesame, nuts, peanuts, cauliflower, and a few more. Today our chiropractor suggested that she may have Candida. She has been complaining about vaginal itching. Any...
  12. I contacted Gevalia about their coffee and did not specify flavored or not. My resonse was that the coffees may contain traces of gluten. Again, I did not ask for clarification of regular vs. flavored. My children are celiac. I am no longer drinking their flavored - just the non-flavored. Can't tell you if it is safe or not because I am not personally celiac...
  13. When we travel, we schedule stops near the Whole Foods grocery stores and stock up our cooler. Another American store that carries gluten-free choices is Trader Joe's. Whole Foods has the best selections, though. Many American stores are starting to carry gluten-free items - you would be able to find things in almost any grocery chain. I would suggest...
  14. My family and I ate there tonight. It is more of an eatery than a restaurant - just a couple of tables. Nice, clean environment. There are two people working and we got there during a dinner rush. The people were very nice but there was a bit of a wait and some dishes were sold out. I really think this is just because they opened recently and it will get...
  15. Oops - I forgot to add something to my last post that went with a question just asked. In my opinion, our digestive system really goes hand in hand with our emotional "system." Once both daughters were diagnosed celiac, we went gluten free in the house. I happen to have no colon (not celiac) and the difference in my abilities to process food and my moods...
  16. My two daughters are celiac. The first one diagnosed had all physical symptoms. My eldest daughter (7 years) was out of control or incredibly sweet. It was driving me crazy. I never would want her to be celiac if I had a choice, but before she was tested, I actually wished that she was celiac so we could treat her moods! Turns out she is celiac and when...
  17. When my 3-1/2 year old daughter gets gluttened, she has projectile vomit (she throws up with a lot of force) and she is constipated. In fact, she tries to hold the poop in since it is so hard and hurts her to come out. She refuses to eat again until she feels better. My other daughter gets very grumpy and has diarrhea when she is gluttened. Have you considered...
  18. My daughter was diagnosed celiac and when they went in to biopsy, they found her esophagus swollen. The doctor said that it should have been very difficult for her to swollow. They tested her eosinophil count and diagnosed her with EE - eosinophilic esophagitis. Basically, her esophagus swells in reaction to any allergen. The swelling can lead to scaring...
  19. Could you tell me if the "cheese" has tree nuts in it? Thank you!
  20. We have not traveled internationally, but we find it very helpful to pack a cooler with staples and ice packs and check it on the plane. We also put a clear note on top of the food items explaining that the food it gluten free and requesting that gloves be used if items need to be searched. I go to the extreme of explaining why - but it is up to you! Enjoy...
  21. We ran into this dilema, too! I found a spread that works for my daughter and our nutritionaist agreed that it worked well. It is tricky - it is the Smart Balance regular with flax oil - it only comes in small tubs. It is different than those in the larger tubs. We use this one because my daughter also can't have too much soy (only oil).
  22. My husband is considering a 2-3 year position in Germany. We would be relocating from the United States. Both of our daughters (ages 3 and 7) are celiac and one has severe food allergies in addition to celiac. Are any of you able to let us know how easy or difficult it is to live with food allergies in Germany? I am concerned about their well being. Also...
  23. I am so glad to hear about your results! Hope that you feel better soon! - Julie
  24. Wow! I am glad that you wrote about EE - my 7 year old was diagnosed Celiac in April and EE in May (when she was scoped). Her's is food allergy (allergic to all grains, corn, legumes and more!!!) She is both celiac and EE. I have also heard that you needed to be on gluten for a longer period of time, but I am no expert. I am not sure of your age - our doctor...

    ARCHIVED Colectomy

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. While I was in the hospital recovering from my j-pouch surgery, my daughter was diagnosed celiac. I am not celiac, but I find eating glten-free without my colon makes life soooo much easier for me. I hope that your recovery is swift. There is a site to visit if you need advice - j-pouch.org. Even if you have an...
