ARCHIVED Looking For Celiacs In Austin Tx
Lockheed replied to gccoyote's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I miss North Dallas. I moved to College Station from the Addison/Richardson area about three years ago. And if you're looking for a good place to get a burger and fries go to Balls Hambergers across Lover's Lane from SMU and they will hook you up. -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain After Gluten Free?
Lockheed replied to Mom2Twins's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am so not a fan of the Atkin's diet. Eliminating all carbs has been linked to increased atherosclerosis which puts you at risk for heart attack and stroke. People that had success on Atkin's are likely to be unidentified celiacs or gluten sensitives in my opinion. You should still have carbs, just from a gluten free source. Carbs are essential for your... -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain After Gluten Free?
Lockheed replied to Mom2Twins's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was going to suggest that there's another food sensitivity too. I have celiac plus a soy sensitivity. I put on another 15 lbs after going gluten free during the first six months (I assume my gut was still healing and it just took time.. plus I probably wasn't great at being gluten free)... then I lost almost 70 lbs by the time I had been gluten free for... -

I'm not in Austin, but I am in College Station. We travel to Austin quite a bit though. -
I was on GNC prenatal - iron free (I just bulked up on my red meats and eggs) but switched to the nature made recently because the GNCs still make me yack even though I'm not pregnant anymore. I ate a ton of fruit for folic acid and the now gluten free chex have folic acid so that would be a good snack during the day. My main issue was that I *HAD* to eat...

Okay most Vodkas are not made just from potatos. Most are distilled from grains and it will say so on the bottle. Kettle One says they are a potato vodka but it says on the back of the bottle "distilled from grains". Although in theory the distillation process should remove enough of the proteins to cause a celiac incident... I don't drink grain vodkas...

ARCHIVED Great gluten-free Vacations - Besides Disney
Lockheed replied to nothungry's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Boston.. there are so many places that you can walk in and ask for the gluten free menu and they don't stare at you like you are an alien. Legal's See Food is my favorite! -
ARCHIVED Original Pancake House - Rockville, Md
Lockheed replied to savvvyseller's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's a good start. I hope they are yummy! I'll have to see if there is one of these locations anywhere near where we are traveling later this month. -
ARCHIVED Celiac - The Autoimmune Connection
Lockheed replied to veggienft's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh good grief you're really going to make me give up sugar aren't you? Thank you so much for that clarification. You just reaffirmed my want to push food sensitivity testing on everyone I know just to make them aware of what they are eating and how it affects their body. I'm sure it's not the only way to get people thinking about food and health... -
ARCHIVED Moving To Another Country To Start A New Life
Lockheed replied to holdthegluten's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Our business partner just moved to Argentina because he can "live like a King on less than $600 a month". Whoa?! yeah. seriously. Other than the two months a year that everyone is sick because of the dumping of pesticides on the crops he has absolutely no complaints.. oh and not having heat in the middle of winter because the government sold too much crude... -
ARCHIVED Celiac - The Autoimmune Connection
Lockheed replied to veggienft's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Why are you implicating sugar here? I understand the wheat. I also have a problem with the statement "private social club of people with test-confirmed intestinal celiac disease". I am test confirmed with MRT but negative on the blood test and ELSA test but biopsy "that is consistent with celiac but ambigious for diagnostic purposes" (in short I wasn't... -
ARCHIVED Celiac - The Autoimmune Connection
Lockheed replied to veggienft's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
you are what you eat.. it's such a profound statement to me now and even more so when I see research like this. When I think about the food I'm eating being treated like a virus in my body, it's much easier to not eat that food. -

ARCHIVED Lame Advertisement Seed
Lockheed replied to RissaRoo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm such a newbie. I thought Lame Advertising was the name of some company! I kept trying to find what everyone was talking about and now I get it! haha.. So when using something like chia nuts in baking are you guys doing a 1:1 replacement with xanthan gum in recipes? Or what's the approximate ratio on that? -
ARCHIVED 16 Secrets The Restaurant Industry Doesn't Want You To Know
Lockheed replied to home-based-mom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks for the link.. that was a fascinating read. I'm in Texas, so there is no hope of forcing places here to provide that data. -
Well I scheduled my follow-up bone density scan, August 11th... it's probably my 10th scan (one of the labs I worked for had a DXA machine so they used to scan me every six months to help calibrate the machine since we already knew I had low bone density) so I know what to expect. I should be used to this by now, but for whatever reason there are always...

I've tried once or twice and my stomach always feels like a brick the next day. But I have issues beyond just gluten too.

ARCHIVED Please Help! I Need Some Expert Opinions.
Lockheed replied to pinkdljj's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know I got celiac disease from my mom's side of the family.. at 5'2" I'm the tallest female even though my dad is 6'3" after having had polio as a kid. I shouldn't be this short. And if you tell me it's not the celiac's disease I'll point out that at 20 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis because no one thought to check my complaints and they kept on feeding... -
my doctor wasn't even kind enough to tell me it was all in my head.. he just gave me a written out referral to a psychiatrist. I really do have depression issues and already had been in therapy over that to have a doctor tell me that I need to see a psychiatrist because he thinks my complaints are made up. How made up is not being able to go to the bathroom...

ARCHIVED Skeptical Mom Trying To Cope
Lockheed replied to Paige'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think you have to put a positive spin on being celiac with children. I try to make things that taste better than the gluten version and then it's a no hands down contest getting everyone in the house to eat gluten free. I don't know if anyone has found a good gluten free mac n cheese. I thought Amy's frozen mac n cheese had the best until they changed... -

Where do you get the Hemp shakes? I'd like to look into those for my husband. -
ARCHIVED Doc Says More Protein...
Lockheed replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had that potassium issue too.. I had to add a banana milkshake (bonus for the calcium!) and I started eating the skins on my baked potatoes and that helped a ton. It is hard at first. Don't forget that nuts have good proteins in them along with those good for you omega fats. You could eat some of those for a snack. -
ARCHIVED My Boyfriend Thinks I'm Being Dramatic
Lockheed replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just tell him that eating even the crutons means you are not eating gluten free and that will TRIPLE your life insurance premiums. Yup.. they nailed me more for being a celiac and not gluten free for three years or longer than they did for DH's previous smoking and high cholesterol.
