  1. Oh Mel, don't feel alone with the vitamin problem..it's not you, it's the form you tried. I give the ones I've learned I can't take to my hubby as well...LOL About Metagenic....well, they make potent stuff. I was on their Ultra Flora Plus DF (probiotics) for a long time. I still am but have cut way back on the amount I take which is now one every other...
  2. Hi Karina, Well, if you want to try a product of theirs, snail mail or call them and ask for a sample. I got a 15 caplet sample bottle of Primal Defense at a show, so I know they have samples to give out. I've tried it a couple times, and it didn't make me sick, but there are sure a lot of other cheaper probiotics out on the market, they just don't have...
  3. Mel, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience and have had to suffer for it... I used to be a vitamin junky then found suddenly I couldn't take anything without it making me sick. After a lot of experimenting the only thing I found to be tolerable was kid's chewables...mainly the gummy variety. Most of them I found were gluten-free, but that doesn...
  4. cdford, I'm going to take a wild guess here that your body may be craving certain nutrients you're not getting...like more calcium and Vit D (in the milk) and the magnesium in the chocolate, or even the gut-tolerable form of Vit C in potatoes. Then too the added amino acids in the milk you may need especially if you're under any stress. Unfortunately...
  5. Susan, If I had a WF like you did, in with all the other fantastic stores right there, I'd go frequently as well!! But unfortunately they are like a 3 hr. drive away. Just learned that TJ's is scheduled to come to my neighborhood but not till 2007!!! Dang, will still have to make that drive AND it's not near any neat stores!! BTW, have you ever...
  6. How can Garden of Life get away with this on their label for "Perfect Food" powder???? All their products from what I can tell, says they are gluten-free, and their Primal Defense has barley grass in it. It's one of their best sellers. Has anyone tried this "Perfect Food"? The company has a good rep. but I'm suspicious!!!
  7. I love it too, but can't use it all the time...............to much bean flour in it. Then I have to resort to the standard rice/potato/tapioca blend for a while..or include the bottle of Beano with the product made from Bob's gluten-free flour mix. LOL
  8. Susan, I too have found things on their shelves that appear gluten-free but aren't listed in the gluten-free list. I don't think they take the gluten-free issue as seriously as they should. For one I love their supplements but have given up since I can't find out if some of the ones I like are gluten-free or not. The label doesn't say. Don't get me...
  9. In one way that's pretty funny, but in another it seemed perfectly logical to her. My 98 year old MIL actually understood it fairly well when I tryed to explain it to her. I was amazed. Ok, let's assume gluten is harmless if reduced to a charcoal state, then doesn't that mean that all the burned crumbs at the bottom of a toaster would be too? ...
  10. Deb, you and I are alike in that we can't do soy. Soy is a common allergen. I can't do soy in any way shape or form........except for a teenie tiny amount of soy lethecin in say a candy product. Even the oil bothers me, so can't take a normal Vit E, only a Rice Tocopheral form of Vit E. When I do ingest soy I get one of the strangest reaction....my...
  11. Thank you celiac3270, Richard and Tiffany, celiac3270, sounds like the commercial Gluten-enzyme someone mentioned using in an earlier discussion is simply a hyped up digestive enzyme being pawned off as one for Celiacs. I wouldn't buy it either, even though I do use digestive enzymes and probiotics with every meal for my IBS....also an antispasmodic...
  12. Well, I haven't been gluten-free for that long (and only because of a positive IgA test), but HAVE been wheat free for over 25 years now, and I'll tell you, yes we've come a long way. There was rice cakes back then but they were hard to find. There wasn't much of anything that was good tasting in the way of gluten-free/WF products. For years I ate spelt and...
  13. I too believe it is the hulls that make it so hard to digest. It is the hardest form of corn there is, and as most of you know, if you eat whole kernel corn (a different variety) it often goes through the digestive tract undigested. I love the stuff, but like Deb's dad, my GI forbid me to eat it because of the diverticulosis. Because I have IBS too...
  14. I've been wheat free for over 25 years, but recently testing positive for IgA so went gluten-free...wheat free was easy compared to this. This may sound like a silly question but there has got to be something that kills the affect of gluten and makes it harmless to us. Is it heat? Is it a chemical? What? Is there research on this or does anyone know...
  15. Tasha, I too have tested positive for IgA only, yet have had a wheat allergy for over 25 years, confirmed in the past with a RAST test. I only had hives and esophageal spasms if I consumed wheat.... 2 years ago I was diagnosed with IBS, and yes I do believe I have IBS. It came after a bout of antibiotics without added probiotics (dumb). I'm also hypothyroid...
  16. Julie, You may want to start suspecting food dyes, or other additives that we still may not know what the affects are in sensitive people. Other than odd symptoms, I know no way of testing for sensitivity to them. We have so many chemicals in our foods now that it's a wonder some people function as well as they do. Kandee
  17. Thank you Mike for your reply and precise description. It all makes perfect sense. My concern was more toward the yeast because of being suspicious of how it was produced, say on bread, which I had read somewhere. (Am I nuts?) Whey was my least concern however, I had to DC the TJ's whey protein because it did list wheat, an initial oversite on my part. I...
  18. Jules, I WASN'T strong enuf to break the bread up...that's why it took those HUGE ravens almost a week to peck through it! All survived however...I'm happy to report!! Since then I've learned that a bread machine is OUT for making gluten-free bread. If anyone knows of a sure fire way to make it in one (my oldie makes a vertical loaf) please share...
  19. I haven't but my husband gets the IV hydrogen peroxide treatments at the ACAM doc's preventative medicine clinic when he has congestion or a bad cold that he can't shake. It takes about 2-3 IV treatments for it to kick it out of his system but it works every time. Next time I get congestion of the lungs I'm going to try it too. At this same clinic I get vitamin...
  20. You're very welcome Granny.... Since I've come to love the homemade stuff so well, I'm either going to make up a ton of the stuff and freeze, (thank goodness for those little 1/2 cup plastic containers by Glad and Ziplock) or freeze a lot of the whole berries to have throughout the year. Happy Holidays, Kandee
  21. Jules!!! I am LMBO...................those are so funny..and I can so relate, although I do cook, and pretty well (I should I used to teach it), but baking gluten-free is another story. My first bread machine gluten-free bread was like your number 2 experience....only I threw mine out in the back yard for the ravens to eat....It took them a week just to...
  22. I'm pretty sure the canned stuff is gluten-free but just started making my own too, since I also have IBS and am SUPER sensitive to HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and it's in so many things. The homemade is soooo easy and soooo much better..(using any of the above mentioned recipes). I even froze the leftover sauce in little individual containers...
  23. And anyone know the difference between autolyzed and hydrolyzed? I posted a question on hydrolyzed yeast and hydrolyzed whey and if they were gluten-free. No answer yet. Eww, we need a food chemist to help us out. I'm confused, that's for sure.
  24. On the non-gluten-free food list on this site it only says Hydrolyzed Wheat is not gluten-free, but in another article I read stay away from the word "Hydrolyzed" period. I have two products. One is Trader Joe's Whey Protein Powder and one of the ingredients is "Hydrolyzed Whey". Another is Anderson's FF Split Pea soup, listing Hydrolyzed Yeast Extract...
  25. Thanks Stacie and celiac3270..... That list is a huge help!!! I'm new at all this...(and learning)... and although I've been sensitive to wheat for over 25 years, with now having been diagnosed, eating gluten-free is a whole new ball game. Kandee
