  1. With regards to my job, I made certain to sign up for FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) benefits through the Human Resources department where I work as soon as I began having serious medical issues earlier this year. That way, legally, my employer cannot hold time taken off for doctor's visits, etc., against me. But I know that everyone has noticed that...
  2. Welcome! I know what you mean...I went gluten free right before THANKSGIVING! But one great thing about this forum is that people share recipes for gluten free *everything* so, with the help of Whole Foods Market, I was able to prepare gluten free pies, stuffing, gravy, etc., and my family thought it all tasted just as good as the "regular" recipes...
  3. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's illness. The only pediatric celiac specialist I know of in Southern CA works in clinics at both Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and Women and Children's Hospital at County USC Medical Center. Her name is Dr. Michelle Pietzak. HOWEVER, a quick Google search revealed eight gastroenterologists at Children...
  4. Ditto. All sorts of digestive problems, acid reflux, milk "allergy", "IBS", etc., starting almost from birth. My mother says I would wake up screaming with "colic" as a toddler. Those symptoms pre-date all autoimmune disease diagnoses.
  5. Yes, I've read medical articles about diminishing or even eliminating "organ-specific" antibodies such as those for Hashimoto's disease by simply following a gluten free diet. But once your thyroid has been damaged I'm not sure it can heal itself to a significant degree. Mine was nearly dead when I was diagnosed with Hashi's (my TSH was over 90!). However...
  6. That's very interesting! It just goes to show you that we probably don't understand enough about the long-term consequences of meddling with Mother Nature to do so safely! After all, we've only had real agriculture for less than 10,000 years; so celiac disease has been with us for less than 10,000 as well. Many of the grains that we can eat safely are...
  7. Hi, I work in Pasadena and live in Glendora. I don't know of any local support groups (although there probably are some out there) but she should know that Whole Foods Market has an entire gluten free section with all sorts of foods plus gluten free breads and bagels, etc in their bakery. Trader Joe's also sells gluten free items such as cereals and...
  8. Hi Lisa, A recent article by Fasano suggests that celiac disease and the associated production of the cytokine zonulin may be the "mother" of other autoimmune disorders, so to speak. Here is a link to the abstract: Open Original Shared Link JoAnn
  9. Hi Barbara, You and I have a lot in common. I was first diagnosed with asthma and psoriasis as a teen, then with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in my thirties, now (in my early 50s) with autoimmune hepatitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and, of course, celiac disease. I've been gluten free for approximately 3 weeks now. My very first sign (usually...
  10. Hi, I don't know much about either of those autoimmune disorders, but there was a thread on this forum about Bullous Pemphigoid some time ago; here is the link: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=34368 As far as the link between celiac disease and other autoimmune diseases, there are many ADs that improve on a gluten free diet, particularly...
  11. Hi Andrea, When I started this thread by asking the question about *symptomatic* differences, the answers I received indicated that all symptoms appear in both gluten intolerance and celiac disease. But there is certainly a lot of controversy as to whether gluten intolerance and celiac disease are merely different phases of the same thing, or completely...
  12. This is a good point...in view of those with DH who have no visible villi damage, or those (like me) who have neurological symptoms, with or without the traditional gastric issues. It does seem like celiac disease wears many different faces!
  13. Hi Lisa, Forgive me for butting in here, but I always thought that celiac disease was a progressive disease; at least, the damage from untreated celiac disease will become worse and worse over time, isn't that so? Doesn't that fit the definition of progressive disease? Or am I missing something here? At the age of two, my granddaughter Carly wasn...
  14. Thanks for the replies; it's good to know that I'm not alone. And mftnchn, I understand...I'm not willing to go back on gluten either. My doctor did offer to do a capsule endoscopy, if I wanted him to, but I would have to eat gluten again for a while, and I just can't do it. I can't let myself feel that sick anymore, now that I know that I don't have to...
  15. Thanks! The reason that I ask about this is that my GI doctor has concluded his investigation of my issues; my bloodwork was negative, my biopsy was negative, my genetics positive for HLA DQ8, and my dietary response overwhelmingly positive: I feel good gluten free and feel TERRIBLE on gluten, with all sorts of neurological and gastric symptoms plus canker...
  16. Thanks for the reply! I was just wondering in general about pinning, and how it works, and what it might mean if a post doesn't get pinned. I realize that it can take a while for a moderator to pin a post.... JoAnn
  17. If a post ends up NOT being pinned, does this mean that the question was deemed inappropriate or just uninteresting or something? JoAnn
  18. Are there any symptoms (besides DH) that are ONLY found in those with celiac disease and are not found in those who are non-celiac gluten-sensitive (NCGS)? For example, are mouth sores/canker sores found only in those with celiac disease? Just wondering....I suspect that the answer is "no, we wish it were that simple!", but I wanted to ask anyway! ...
  19. Another thing to think about...although it's unusual for a man to have fibromyalgia, your symptoms sound very familiar to me (I have fibro). My son-in-law has just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia; it took them years to figure it out, because he's male and it's just not the first thing a doctor would think of. You might want to ask your doctor if this...
  20. The letter is very well written. Thank you for your efforts, Gentleheart! JoAnn
  21. Hi Sue, It would probably look very different to you now. There have been lots of new homes and big malls built in that area. Do you miss the Southern CA weather? Of course, it must be nice to have snow for Christmas....do you get much snow by Christmas where you are? JoAnn
  22. As others have said, this is serious....please get some sort of medical help, even if it's from a free clinic or an emergency room! You could go into a coma. I was nearly at that point when my Hashimoto's was diagnosed, and my thyroid had swelled up to the point where it was pressing on my windpipe making it hard to breathe. I ended up at the ER where...
  23. P.S. Fibromyalgia cannot explain all of your symptoms, as it does not explain all of mine. But the combination of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, plus other autoimmune issues such as Hashimoto's, plus fibro (which frequently accompanies autoimmune diseases), certainly might! Good luck!
  24. Amy, Have you seen a rheumatologist to rule out fibromyalgia? So many of your symptoms sound SO familiar to me! I can relate to being tired of doctors!! I too have Hashimoto's thyroiditis along with several other autoimmune diseases plus fibromyalgia. My severe back pain, weird cramps and muscle stiffness in my feet and legs, migraines,...
  25. Thanks for the reply, SGWhiskers. Yes, now that I think about it, the one time I KNOW I was glutened by accident in the past two weeks I had a screaming migraine the next day, followed by two more days of the big D. The headache I had today was just a mild thing by comparison....probably sinus related. The vertigo was only a problem for a short while...
