ARCHIVED Can New Outbreaks Occur While On Dapsone?

Thanks, ravenwoodglass and happygirl. I appreciate the info. I've been using salt with no added iodine for cooking but we do need to verify that all of the soaps and toiletries are gluten free. -

				ARCHIVED Whats Going On?
nasalady replied to Aeman56's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My husband has a really bad case of DH and the rash takes so long to heal that it would be a disaster if he had any gluten (not to mention gluten gives me headaches, diarrhea, mouth sores, and neurological symptoms). So I've been making my own gluten free BBQ sauces: Basic gluten-free BBQ Sauce: Ingredients: 1 medium onion, grated or finely chopped... -

You're welcome! I was so excited when I found out that medical research is apparently on the brink of a big breakthrough in the area of autoimmune diseases! And Fasano's theory just makes so much sense. One year ago I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I started to visit various specialists: rheumatologists, neurologists, gastroenterologists... -

ARCHIVED Can New Outbreaks Occur While On Dapsone?
nasalady replied to nasalady's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi there.... I know that more than 100 people have looked at this post so far.....is there really no one out there who's been on Dapsone and experienced new DH outbreaks? I believe that it is possible to have new outbreaks while on the medication, but it helps to verify it with people who have been there! Please reply if you have any info that... -

nasalady replied to mellowyellowmushroom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I guess I was fortunate in that my gastroenterologist is apparently a progressive thinker who is really up on the latest celiac disease literature. I have a nasty habit of downloading and printing out recent medical journal papers to take with me to my first appointment with any doctor, just in case I run into "antiquated" attitudes. I always... -

I was the one diagnosed with celiac disease last fall, so at first I tried to cook gluten free dinners for everyone, but my husband and kids continued to eat gluten-y foods for breakfast and lunch. This didn't work for our family, although some families manage to deal with it and keep the gluten-free stuff separate from the gluten foods. I was constantly... -
My son and daughter both have KP, and it's improved a lot since we all went gluten free. My daughter's eczema disappeared within two weeks on the gluten-free diet. Here are several old threads from this forum on the subject: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=53434 https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=12370...

ARCHIVED Can New Outbreaks Occur While On Dapsone?
nasalady posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Husband has DH (at least we're about 99% sure it's DH); he's been taking Dapsone for several weeks now and his blisters were healing and turning purple. Yesterday I noticed that his face was red; by this morning it was clear that he has a new outbreak on his face. He also has a few new blisters on his backside and his knees and elbows are red too. ... -

nasalady replied to nasalady's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thanks so much for the information....it's very helpful! He has been getting bloodwork done on a regular basis, so the doctor is watching that aspect. You mentioned feeling weak, as have others. Does Dapsone ever make you feel like you're about to pass out? Thanks again, JoAnn -

Please see the following topic in the Dermatitis Herpetiformis forum: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=57093 My husband had NO IDEA that he had a gluten problem until he went gluten free with the rest of the family and then drank beer during the Superbowl weekend! Poor guy! He's still paying for it.... I'm betting you are... -

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac Disease?
nasalady replied to jshelton999's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Jim, Yes, if your gastro and dermatological symptoms are improving on the gluten-free diet, you either have celiac disease or are gluten-intolerant. Wheat allergies generally don't have the same symptoms as celiac disease or NCGI. Doesn't matter that all of your tests are negative; you could still have celiac disease. In this particular situation... -

I probably would have said "%$&*($#@ autoimmune diseases!" But then I have seven of them. I'm so sorry to hear about your experiences. Unfortunately thyroid autoimmune diseases (e.g., Hashimoto's and Graves Disease) are extremely common among those with celiac disease. I take 200 mcg of Unithroid per day. I have not found a doctor...

				ARCHIVED Pinpointing Problem Foods
nasalady replied to KarenFe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Karen, Yes, you probably shouldn't eat french fries from a restaurant unless you know that they don't fry breaded items in the same fryer. You should call the restaurant and ask them...it definitely would give you some important information one way or the other. I was surprised to learn recently that wine can be a potential issue, not because... -

nasalady replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I live in Southern CA and shop at TJs all the time! They have wonderful gluten free macaroni and cheese, their own line of gluten free pastas, gluten free granolas, gluten free breakfast cereals, brown rice flour tortillas, gluten free snacks (chips, etc), and gluten free frozen tamales (beef, chicken, or chili cheese). There's probably a lot more but... -
Neurological symptoms are common with celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance. Some people only have the neuro symptoms, while others have both the neuro and gastric. I have had both. I had the diarrhea/abdominal cramping/pain issues from childhood, but just recently, within the past year or so, developed ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, migraines, blurry...

I'm glad you're going to see a doctor! Please do so as soon as possible, these are serious symptoms! The previous poster is correct about the blood tests that should be run and that you may have Hashimoto's. Here's my story: As a teenager, then a young adult, I was always the coldest person in the room....EXCEPT for a brief period in my twenties...

ARCHIVED Could This Be Dh? I Have To Ask....
nasalady replied to nasalady's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Just a quick update on my husband: Apparently the Dapsone is working, because the worst of the blisters (the giant ones located where he sits down) are actually healing now, closing up and turning purple. Interestingly, the scaly rash on his knees and elbows seems to be healing and it is turning purple as well!?! Which is weird, because it didn't look... -

Feel free to vent away....at least you found out sooner than I did! I was tested because my *granddaughter* was diagnosed with celiac disease! And yes, frequently we are more educated than the doctors, because this is a "rare" condition (at least, the doctors are taught in medical school that it is rare). We educate ourselves because our health is... -

Yes, he's had bloodwork done several times recently, so they have a proper baseline, and he's going for his first "monitoring" blood test this coming Friday. Thanks for the warnings...I hope you can get off of Dapsone soon! JoAnn
