				ARCHIVED Lost...
nasalady replied to klink3r's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are very young....you can easily have a positive blood test, which means that they detected the autoantibodies circulating in your bloodstream, before any associated damage gets bad enough to detect. Also, you went gluten free before the biopsy and went back on gluten for only a week, which is definitely not long enough! You should eat LOTS of gluten... -

				ARCHIVED Liver Enzyme Question
nasalady replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi jasonD2, Yes, many people with celiac disease experience elevated liver enzymes. Here is an article on this topic posted on this site: https://www.celiac.com/articles/1010/1/Live...mron/Page1.html Also, since many other autoimmune diseases are associated with celiac disease (possibly even caused by celiac disease), autoimmune liver disease has... -

				ARCHIVED Soooo Confused! Please Help!
nasalady replied to still coping's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As others have said before....if you *do* have celiac disease, and you continue to eat gluten, even in "small" amounts, you are allowing the damage to your intestines to continue, and you are increasing your chances of developing serious complications, including intestinal cancer. Unless you go completely gluten free, you will never know if the gluten... -

ARCHIVED How Is A False Negative Possible? (if It Looks Like A Duck...)
nasalady replied to Tim86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As Jestgar explained in such helpful detail, some people make more exotic antibodies that just won't show up in the standard tests. I too am seronegative for RA, but you can see the damage on xrays and my fingers are starting to develop the classic nodules at the joints. Even though I'm on prednisone and Imuran... -

ARCHIVED How Is A False Negative Possible? (if It Looks Like A Duck...)
nasalady replied to Tim86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had all of the same neuro symptoms you describe along with the gastro symptoms as well. I went to a neurologist and had an MRI of the brain, which was negative. I began to suspect celiac disease was behind the neuro symptoms because I had run across references to celiac ataxia, etc., in my research. False negatives are common in both bloodwork and... -

ARCHIVED Scientific American Article - Aug 2009 Issue
nasalady replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Publications & Publicity
I don't know about statistics on the number of false negatives; I am very interested in that info too! I can only offer my family's experiences. My granddaughter Carly first tested negative for celiac in both blood work and biopsy when she was 2 years old. She was very thin (dx Failure to Thrive), with GERD, vomiting, diarrhea, etc....all of the classic... -
Hang in there girl! Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way.... ((hugs)) JoAnn P.S. I'm on Effexor for my fibro..I've heard it's a nightmare to get off of that one too! My rheumatologist was talking about switching me from Effexor to Cymbalta.....! Scares me.

ARCHIVED For $10/loaf It Should Be Fresh
nasalady replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've just bought a new bread machine (Zojirushi), after resisting for a long time. I also purchased Pamela's Amazing Wheat-Free Bread Mix for the first time (from the online store that shall remain nameless), along with the Annaliese Robert's cookbook, Gluten Free Baking Classics. It turns out that her bread recipes are specifically for the Zoji! I dialed... -

ARCHIVED What Are Your "glutened" Symptoms?
nasalady replied to LauraZ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Laura, My husband gets the skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis - blisters, severe itching) when he's glutened, and it takes literally WEEKS (more than a month for sure) to go away. If you have dermatitis herpetiformis (DH for short), you have celiac disease, whether or not you tested negative in the bloodwork. I get both neurological symptoms... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Costochondritis?
nasalady replied to Tiff's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Costochondritis is an inflammation of the soft tissues attached to the rib cage. Open Original Shared Link I have fibromyalgia, which is considered to be sort of an "arthritis" of the soft tissues. People with fibro frequently have costochondritis. I've only had one episode, but it was excruciating! It literally hurt to breathe; I couldn't even... -

ARCHIVED Is Rose Wine Gluten Free
nasalady replied to Larryceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My husband and I are both celiacs, and we've definitely been glutened by wine. We drank a Pinot Noir one night and both experienced symptoms afterwards. It was the only thing that was new or different in our diet at that time. I emailed the owner of the winery (it's a small family-run winery, California central coast area) and he responded that yes... -
Beverly, I'm so sorry you're going through this. The husband of one of my best friends was on Cymbalta and tried to get off....he experienced all of the symptoms that you did but he didn't handle it nearly as well. Mike ended up at the hospital (ER) because his symptoms were so severe, but he was so disoriented he actually walked out of the ER while no...

ARCHIVED Scientific American Article - Aug 2009 Issue
nasalady replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Publications & Publicity
What does your son like to eat? Do you live near a Trader Joe's market? They have a wonderful boxed gluten free macaroni and cheese (with rice noodles) that my 3 year old son loves! Both of my toddlers also eat gluten free hot dogs and Bush's baked beans, or my homemade chili. They also like Trader Joe's gluten free pastas and mini tacos (in the freezer... -

ARCHIVED Blisters - Was Wondering If Anyone Can Help
nasalady replied to DinaB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds very much like DH to me....my husband is dealing with the same thing. My understanding is that if you have DH, you have celiac disease, not NCGI. Here is a quote from the National Institutes of Health website on celiac disease (Open Original Shared Link) Biopsies of the proximal small bowel are indicated in individuals with a positive celiac... -

				ARCHIVED Ds Was Given Pretzels.
nasalady replied to Maggs05's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't react to a glutening for a day or two. But everyone is different...some people react almost instantaneously. What were his symptoms before he went gluten free? It's likely that he will experience something similar, although I really hope he doesn't have a bad reaction! -

ARCHIVED African Americans With Celiac Too?
nasalady replied to BellaVoce's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
YES, African Americans can have celiac disease! Please read the posts and comments at the following links: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Besides, what is your doctor thinking, anyway! Doesn't he realize that many African-Americans also have some European ancestry? My two toddlers (my biological grandchildren, adopted children... -

				ARCHIVED Toddler Portable Lunch Ideas
nasalady replied to mom2twoangels's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can she have dairy? My 3-year-old son loves cottage cheese and yogurt, which we send in small containers....also baby carrots, bananas, home-made gluten free muffins, sandwiches made with Liz's microwave "buns" (see recipe and variations in link to topic, below): https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=56641 -
Pietzak is exclusively a pediatric doctor, as far as I know. She wouldn't even see my little girl and had her seen by a younger GI doctor (Collins) at CHLA. We do like Dr. Collins, but even though Emma's DNA test revealed HLA DQ2, she wouldn't order a biopsy because Emma's bloodwork was negative. The celiac panel is notoriously inaccurate in young children...

				ARCHIVED Pizza Crust
nasalady replied to vinnie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This recipe comes from Julie, one of the contributors on "Mennonite Girls Can Cook". This is absolutely the best gluten-free pizza crust we've ever had; in fact, it's better than many of the wheat-based crusts we've had, too! White bean flour may be purchased from Bob's Red Mill and Barry Farms websites. It is not at all strong-tasting like Garfava... -

				ARCHIVED Possible Misdiagnosis
nasalady replied to glutengal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As Lisa pointed out, it's very common for someone with celiac disease to have an autoimmune thyroid disease as well. In fact, celiac disease, which causes increased production of the cytokine zonulin, has been fingered as the possible culprit in the development of many other autoimmune diseases: Open Original Shared Link I very much doubt that... -
My husband has recently been diagnosed with DH, and was put on Dapsone. Even with the medication he broke out with new blisters, although they were much smaller and healed quickly. We know he was probably glutened a couple of times but other breakouts have no good explanation. I think maybe he's detoxing, but I don't really know. This would not...

				ARCHIVED Breakfast Ideas
nasalady replied to Jennifer2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I agree with hannahp57....be sure to get Pamela's baking mix. Our favorite weekend breakfast is blueberry pancakes; I just use Pamela's recipe for pancakes on the baking mix bag and add blueberries. Yum! During the week I try to eat lower carb and rarely have time to cook, so I frequently have something simple like cottage cheese for breakfast.
