  1. I use Barry Farm's white bean flour and millet flour; they are cheaper (but they tend to be more expensive with regards to shipping). I've never had any problems with cross-contamination from any BF products. I DEFINITELY was glutened by Arrowhead Mills millet flour! JoAnn
  2. Many of us tested negative yet subsequently found that we DO have either celiac or gluten-intolerance. My granddaughter Carly was negative in bloodwork and first biopsy, yet had a positive biopsy a year later. Her doctor was smart enough to keep testing even though Carly has none of the known genetic markers for celiac. Listen to your body. Good luck...
  3. I had major daily migraines until I went gluten free in November. Now I only have them when I've been glutened. For me, it's been a long process to become completely gluten free. For example, yesterday I just realized that I may be glutening myself and my family (we all have gluten issues) by using my old Crockpot because the stoneware is porous. ...
  4. I should begin by saying that I do believe it is beneficial to have the results of genetic testing. However, it is not true that one cannot develop celiac disease without having at least one of the known (in the US) genetic markers. European doctors recognize a few additional markers and from what I've read, Asian celiacs have different markers as well....
  5. Hi Karangel, I saw that you added me as a friend, so I've reciprocated! My husband is also having serious skin issues (dermatitis herpetiformis plus possible psoriasis and eczema), although he is not nearly as ill as your hubby. I'm sorry to hear that your husband has suffered through so much! We are all gluten free now, and my husband is...
  6. For most of my life I've been baking bread....I used to make my homemade whole wheat bread for my family, 4 - 5 loaves a week, 52 weeks a year. Until now I've never used a bread machine. In fact, I secretly sneered at them! I guess part of it was that I loved the physicality of kneading the dough....it really made you feel like you were accomplishing...
  7. Yes! I definitely have the same problem when I've been glutened. Usually the first symptoms are a MAJOR migraine, slightly bloody nose, and vertigo. The "D" follows later.
  8. Hi Ken, You're definitely not alone....many of us are in the same situation! Feel free to look at my profile and visit the website (blog) link there; as you'll see, I know where you're coming from! Actually, recent research has revealed that nearly half of all celiacs are overweight at diagnosis. Here is a link to a 2006 medical journal...
  9. Ptkds's story is my experience in a nutshell. But I'm on prednisone for autoimmune hepatitis right now....I'm hoping that when I'm off it I will start to lose. It's possible that I will have to cut out other foods too....I know that some on this board have had to eliminate most or even all grains and dairy in order to lose weight and feel better. Good...
  10. Definitely D! I'm almost never constipated. Always had D as a child.
  11. I just thought I should mentione that iodine can DEFINITELY hurt if you are one of the celiacs who develop the skin rash, dermatitis herpetiformis (aka DH). DH sufferers are supposed to avoid iodine until the rash clears up. JoAnn
  12. I've been gluten free since November....it was hard at first because I went gluten free right before Thanksgiving. But I already had found this site, and several gluten free cooking blogs so I made an entire gluten free Thanksgiving dinner (including stuffing, pies, etc.)! My husband loved it! It's nice to know that if you're willing and able to cook...
  13. Hi Kim, Yes, I had ALL of the symptoms you listed above except seizures, plus I had pretty severe vertigo, and my neurologist sent me for an MRI to rule out MS. I was in the process of being diagnosed with celiac disease, and had heard that celiac could mimic MS. Sure enough, I had no MS-type lesions in the brain. My doctors all came to the conclusion...
  14. Hi, First of all, having the HLA DQ2 gene marker means very little without symptoms (because a large percentage of humanity has that marker); it simply means that you might develop celiac disease. However, it sounds as though you did have symptoms before you went gluten free. Is that the case? FYI, I've only been gluten free since November, but I...
  15. I had the bloodwork done through Prometheus Labs. It was the full celiac panel plus the DNA analysis. My insurance would not pay for it. I paid $799.00. JoAnn
  16. I have both neuro and gastric symptoms, and what happens when I've been glutened can vary a bit. My symptoms don't usually start right away, but within 12 to 72 hours later. The only time I knew immediately that I had been glutened my tongue started to tingle then I broke out with canker sores. Anyway, generally within a day or two after a glutening...
  17. I've been glutened by Arrowhead Mills Millet Flour. I read a post on this forum that said that some Arrowhead Mills products had issues with cross contamination and sure enough, as soon as I stopped using it my symptoms went away. Please see topic at following URL: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=56278
  18. Lynnie, I have both celiac disease AND rheumatoid arthritis. Apparently, so do you! Having celiac disease does not make the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis go away! Is that what you've been worried about? That if you have celiac disease, you can't have arthritis too? I have asthma, psoriasis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren...
  19. I cannot imagine a case in which knowing that you have celiac disease would cause problems with disability. If anything, it only means that you have even more physical problems than you reported in your original application! In other words, you're *sicker*, not better off....isn't that right? Lynnie, why are you worried about this? Do you know something...
  20. Just wanted to post about our experience at Skosh Monahan's last night in Costa Mesa. They're located at 2000 Newport Blvd, close to where the 55 fwy ends in Costa Mesa....sort of an Irish pub/sports bar plus restaurant. They have an extensive gluten free menu, which includes several appetizers, pizzas, pasta, seafood, steaks, etc., plus gluten free ale...
  21. There's a product called Egg Replacer that a lot of people use; I think it's made by Ener-G.
  22. My husband and I are both celiacs; I've been gluten free since November and he has since January. He has severe DH right now. I didn't believe that there could be gluten in wine until both of us were glutened by a red wine (a Pinot Noir) from one of our favorite little Central Coast wineries, Claiborne and Churchill. We are both absolutely certain...
  23. Hi Lynnie, Welcome to the board! Your story sounds VERY familiar!! As a child, I always had "digestive problems". Plus I developed two autoimmune diseases, namely asthma and psoriasis, before I even started high school. Then the doctor told me that my gastric woes were just "IBS". Fast forward to my early 30s, when I'm diagnosed with Hashimoto...
  24. The Chex idea will probably work, but if you really want bread crumbs, you should know that crumbs made from gluten free bread work just great! Have you tried to make bread yet? There are some great recipes out there, but you can start out slow by getting a bread mix; two of the best are the Gluten Free Pantry's Favorite Sandwich Bread or Pamela's Gluten...
