ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed Today...need Advice.....? Please Help!
SGWhiskers replied to Krystle56's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Congrats! and I'm sorry and Welcome about your diagnosis. I've been gluten-free for 9 weeks now. The first few were pretty rocky trying to figure out what to eat. I made lots of mistakes. When I started eating whole foods like these folks recommended, I started seeing some improvement. I agree that at first, whole foods are the easiest way to go. Your... -
I went and voted today. Hurray for all of us who made it a priority. My neighbors arrived at the same time as me, so we caught up with each other while we waited. We all chuckled at my bag full of fruit, and that skinny me would not have a bag full of chips. That led to a discussion of Celiac, and the wife said she sometimes wondered about herself. I was...

ARCHIVED Jasmine Green Tea
SGWhiskers replied to TinaM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The entire line of Stash Tea is Gluten free. Each tea bag has the ingredients clearly listed. I've not come across any casein products. Soy is in a fair number of their herbal blends. They also have allergen and ingredient information on their FAQ page. Open Original Shared Link I absolutely love their teas and have 8 boxes in my pantry right now. They... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Dairy Free, Favorite Things, Shopping Online
SGWhiskers replied to artselegance's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm Celiac, Milk and Egg allergic. Chocolate bars with 70% chocolate or more are frequently casein free. (I have not purchased one since going gluten-free) Soy Garden "butter" is casein/egg/gluten free I got used to soy milk by drinking the chocolate or plain with coffe syrups added (I don't know if the syrups are gluten-free) Hershey's chocolate syrup... -
ARCHIVED Body Going Nuts On New Diet
SGWhiskers replied to JoD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I was feeling the worst prediagnosis, my immune system was run down. I ended up with a cervical infection. I didn't know it, but the doc picked it up. My only symptom was spotting. Also, fibroids (not detected with a standard gyno exam), are common, benign causes of spotting. I'm sure there are other causes as well. Oh, not taking your pill at the same... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Odd Happenings
SGWhiskers replied to adkinsadam1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't help with the weight loss. At any age, (especially 15), it should be taken very seriously. I hope you get it figured out quickly. My canker sores seem to come and go with my exposure to gluten and/or dairy. I have a milk allergy and Celiac. Wishing you well. SGWHISKERS -
My second week on the gluten-free diet, I started incredible thirst/urination as well. I panicked and e-mailed my type 1 diabetic sister in law. She sent back several possibilities, told me to see my doctor, and then said "If you are curious about what your blood sugars are running, you can buy an inexpensive blood sugar monitor at Walgreens or CVS for about...

ARCHIVED Daughter Needs College Roommate In Fl Fall 09
SGWhiskers replied to Cath4k's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe you can find someone who is highly allergic to nuts or seafood. They may be more willing to go gluten-free in order to be assured of a roomie that won't bring home an allergen. I wish your daughter well in school. She sounds like a young woman you can be proud of. I hope you find a cost effective and safe housing arrangement. SGWHISKERS -
ARCHIVED Gene Test Results... Worth Waiting For!

ARCHIVED Frogleggs Needs Our Guidance
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Frogleggs, If one of your tests came back positive for Celiac, you need to stop eating gluten now. If you continue, you are risking your health, permanent damage, and possibly your life. Eating gluten free means not eating a speck of any food with wheat, rye, barley, tricticale, and oats. (In 6 months, you might be able to add back oats). There are... -
ARCHIVED Frogleggs Needs Our Guidance
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Frogleggs, I saw this response from you on another thread and I thought you deserved your own thread. I'm recently diagnosed, so some of the veterans will be better at giving advice. Veterans, can you join in? In the first line, Frogleggs is referring to the headache symptoms that the other poster was experiencing. -
ARCHIVED Complex Migraines + Gluten Intolerance = Celiacs?
SGWhiskers replied to foodlens's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, Froggleggs, I'm going to start you a new thread. Everyone will help you. Dig out the results of your blood panel, and I'm sure someone will help you make sense of it. SGWhiskers -
ARCHIVED Complex Migraines + Gluten Intolerance = Celiacs?
SGWhiskers replied to foodlens's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope things with your complex migraine get better quickly. I had chronic daily migraines before going gluten-free. I was diagnosed with basilar/vestibular migraines. My migraines gave me very very mild stroke like symptoms, but nothing as serious as what you describe. Keep exploring with your doctors, but I see no reason not to go gluten-free this instant... -
ARCHIVED First Time Eating Out
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I made myself a yummy salad, packed some snacks, and leftover gluten-free brownie in a gift bag. We were late to the shower because of a maniac on the highway, so we got a booth in the corner of the banquet room. The only two people who asked about my food were incredibly gracious. The hostess offered to take my gift bag. I told her it was food because I... -
I'm going to a baby shower tomorrow. Actually, I forgot it was tomorrow until this morning when my mom called about carpooling. I would have made arrangements sooner if I had remembered. Can I just bring salad from home to eat at the shower? When at a restaraunt, do you have to eat their food? I could call ahead to ask for a fruit plate if I need to....

ARCHIVED Diagnosed W/ Too Many Food Allergies?
SGWhiskers replied to jsb727's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My testing for food allergies was only for the big 8. I came back positive for Milk and Egg. I had never had what I would consider allergic symptoms before and was surprised by the food allergies. I eliminated every trace of milk and egg in my diet for 1.5 years. The only changes I noticed were elimination of canker sores, and (gross alert) healing of a very... -
ARCHIVED Is This What Gluteining Feels Like? And Other Questions.
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Goodness, Some of you have had to cut out so much. I'd say I'm fairly luck in that I don't have the digestive problems most of the time. It is nice to hear what you could and couldn't tolerate becaues it gives some validity to some of the vague sensations I have after I eat something I know is gluten-free. It kind of explains why I feel like I can't handle... -
ARCHIVED Craving Something Creamy (any Ideas?)
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I found a box of Chocolate Jello Cook and Serve. I have Strawberries and ice and Orange Juice. I don't think I'll add the orange juice. My almond milk is all out, but I think I have shredded coconut. If not, I'll toss in some pecans. I had a vegan friend make chocolate ice cream with avacado as the base years ago. It was really good. Reminded me of a thicker... -
ARCHIVED Craving Something Creamy (any Ideas?)
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Wow you folks are quick! I've got to get down to Whole Foods to try the coconut milk ice cream. That sounds perfect! I'll plan on getting a stash next time I go. It is 45 minutes away, so it is a rare treat when I go. I've tried the vanilla almond milk. I like the flavor a lot, but it is thin. It does not have that creamy texture I'm craving. Is Rice ice... -
ARCHIVED Craving Something Creamy (any Ideas?)
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm in week 7 and having some serious cravings for something creamy. In the old days, pudding, ice cream, french toast, or yogurt would have hit the spot. Now, I've got dairy allergy, egg allergy, Celiac, and cutting out soy and beans because of the gas. I'm willing to use a little bit of soy if I need to since I'm not actually allergic to it. Maybe 1/8th... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms And Approaching It....
SGWhiskers replied to xzandra's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Xzandra, I'm not a doctor and I only learned of Celiac Disease a few months ago. Your symptoms are similar to mine. It certainly sounds like Celiac is a possibility and worth getting the testing. I want to caution you that there are many other things that could cause your symptoms. If the doctors want to explore other kinds of testing as well, I think it... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms And Approaching It....
SGWhiskers replied to xzandra's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I emphatically agree with Shay. I've had good doctors and bad and some that were nice, but didn't help much. A good doctor who listens and believes you is critical. Try a rhumatologist. They are used to patients that have vague symptoms and testing for weird diseases. If you feel badly, don't let anyone shake your resolve to get answers. I've had 9 diagnoses... -
ARCHIVED So Worried About My Husband
SGWhiskers replied to Mandy1020's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mandy, Has your husband had the blood test for Celiac? That can be done in a matter of days. You won't have to wait a month to have some answers. If that comes back positive, you can choose to go straight to the Celiac diet or have him keep eating gluten and have the biopsy. I chose the biopsy so I could see how much damage was done (and look for complications... -
ARCHIVED I Am So Hungry Were You?
SGWhiskers replied to cat3883's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Eat up on all those healthy foods. Your body needs the nutrients. Avoid sugar, soda, and low nutrient starches. Aside from that, just plan on dieting in two years after you heal. If your weight does not stabilize in a few months, see a dietician. We are all supposed to see one anyway. My insurance won't pay though. I'm at 7 weeks and starving every...
