I have a friend who would like to go through the crazy effort of cooking gluten free for me. She has regular metal pans (not non-stick). Can we use those if they are cleaned, or is there a special process for removing the gluten from metal pans that will be too laborious for a one night visit. Yes, she is a great friend. We will be cooking together, so I...

Around my family, the meal inspection and food questions are out of curiosity and conversation. They are curious about what I can and can't eat just like I ask a friend about their new "Raw" diet, or vegetarian dish. (Not that ours is the same thing). It is just different from what I'm used to and I'm curious and fishing for ideas. It is like asking a single...

ARCHIVED Very Weird Symptom...?
SGWhiskers replied to HelpinOhio's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not ruling out a disease process, but what about a chemical reaction from a lotion you are using. I discolored several shirts when I was a teen/early 20's with a acne medication for my back. Wishing you the best figuring out the mystery. -
ARCHIVED Tired/fuzzy/ Swollen/bloated But No Stomach Distress?
SGWhiskers replied to yumyummum's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'll keep it brief since I have a tendancy to ramble. I DEFINATELY have the sleepiness/fuzzy/vertigo/confusion/aches/pain thing going on when I have gluten. The only digestive thing I had was a couple of months of "normal" looking poo (I'm always constipated). I wouldn't have thought anything of it except it coincided with the onset of the worst of the... -
ARCHIVED Gf Make-up
SGWhiskers replied to jknnej's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Crystalkd, Look at www.everydayminerals.com All of their products are gluten free. I've been using their products, and they are inexpensive and send a free sample pack for the cost of shipping ($3.50 or so) My skin has also completely cleared up since starting with this product and the gluten-free diet. Also, they don't use the bismuth that is in some mineral... -
ARCHIVED Going To A Cook Out
SGWhiskers replied to Crystalkd's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Foil is reliable. To be safe, maybe double wrap it incase the tongs have sharp edges. The first time I used foil, I messed up and set the neat little cooked package on my plate full of "safe" food. Oops, the bottom of the foil is contaminated. You will need to get 2 plates. One to set the foil on while you open it and another to set the meat/veggies on... -
ARCHIVED I Need Product Recommendations For Wirey Hair
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I need some recommendations for hair products. My hair is coarse, wirey, thick, wavy, long and has a mind of its own. Straightening products have helped me get the prettiest results in the past. Products designed to enhance curl just make my hair kinkier. I used to love Aveda's light elements line, but they eliminated my favorite product and the replacement... -
ARCHIVED How Accurate Is An Upper Endoscopy?
SGWhiskers replied to HelpinOhio's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since you have been eating gluten, if you have Celiac, the endoscopy will pick it up. (Assuming they take enough samples and the pathologist knows what he/she is doing). Since your blood tests were negative, there is a pretty good chance that any symptoms you have are caused by another disease. Continuing with the endoscopy will allow the docs to look for... -
ARCHIVED Help With My Diagnoses
SGWhiskers replied to Lisa79's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lisa, Congrats on the diagnosis. It took me 5 weeks until I felt even a hint better. It took me that long to get enough gluten out of my diet dispite trying everything I thought was reasonable. At 5 weeks, I went OCD ish and started to have some improvement. When everyone here says check your diet, it is soooo true. Darn CC. It was 2-3 months before I thought... -
ARCHIVED My Poor 2 Year Old :( Do Ya Think?
SGWhiskers replied to Lovemy4babies's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your comment about your 2 year old being hungry all the time and not feeling pain reminded me of a genetic syndrome called Prader Willi Syndrome. Open Original Shared Link I hope that your son has celiac because it is so treatable, but keep an open mind to other possitilities. You may also want to take him to the genetics center at U of M. I agree that... -
ARCHIVED Wanna Help Me Pay It Forward?
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm a highly sensitive Celiac, so I'm only passing on food that I would eat with the exception of the lactose free milk. No reason to torture her with soy if I don't have to. I know the breaking the bank thing for sure. I'm going to try to go cheap but safe. I'm glad you said the milk in a candybar could be enough to trigger D. I would have assumed that small... -
I need to wear gloves 3-10 times a week at my hospital job. Latex caused a problem right away, so I switched to Nitrelle. I'm still having a problem with them. I wor 6 pairs yesterday, and my hands are cracking, chapping, itching, burning, and red in a "glove shape" at up to my wrists. I've only been wearing the nitrelles for 4 months. This week was a heavy...

ARCHIVED Wanna Help Me Pay It Forward?
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have an acquaintence who was referred to me for questions about Celiac. We talked for a while, and she is having all the tell tale signs of possible Celiac. I told her to get blood testing, but because of physician fatigue, she isn't ready to schedule yet another appointment right now. She has been playing around with a hit or miss attempt at an elimination... -
I ate literally non stop for 2.5 months and was always thirsty. I'm at 8 months, and still eat as much if not more than hubby although the urgency has subsided. When I accidentally gluten myself, I become ravenous a few days later. I've gained about 15 lbs, which I will worry about after my 2 year anniversary. Moral of the story. This will pass as your...

ARCHIVED How Can You Be Sure What Is Ccing You?
SGWhiskers replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm one of the people always freaking out about CC. I have a running list of suspicions, and when the same thing keeps popping up, I do a challenge. For example, I seem to be the rare celiac who can't tolerate the smell of gluten. I repeatedly got sick on Sundays. I figured out that I started feeling bad at the grocery store and tested out my theory 2 additional... -
ARCHIVED Amount Of Gluten Trigger When You React?
SGWhiskers replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope you are feeling better soon. I feel the gluten 45 minutes after eating it and 3-4 minutes after smelling lots of it. When I ingest it, I'm like you and the aches and pains build for a few days then start to fade on day 4 or 5. Ibuprofin also helps me as well as taking a 1/4 of a benadryl (check gluten-free) to get some comfortable sleep on the weekends... -
So once again, I've glutened myself. I sick, sick, sick, of it. I don't feel horrible yet, but it is headed that way hour by hour. Grrrr. So what stupid thing did I do? I used a glass dish that was recently used to heat gluten soup. Washing is supposed to take care of that problem. The other possibility is that I was desperate to get chicken out of my teeth...

ARCHIVED Sprueberg-- A Gluten Free City
SGWhiskers replied to Lisa16's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Could we have one day a year that we put laxatives and sleeping pills into the desserts of unsuspecting criminals who attempt to break the gluten free laws. Maybe negligent manufacturers/ chefs/ and in-laws could be on that list. Hmmm. That makes me sound a little crazy. Hmmm. I'll share the devious side of my brain anyway. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Understand Fam And Celiac?
SGWhiskers replied to NicoleAJ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I charted dilligently for a few years before being diagnosed with celiac, (but I was symptomatic at the time). I've always had long cycles 34-45 days typically, and painful cramps from endometriosis. A few thoughts from my experience. Although I could read the charts well within a month or two, it took 5-6 months before I really knew my body. Almost every... -
ARCHIVED GF Drinks
SGWhiskers replied to mario's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Loving the lists. Keep the product names coming. Stash tea-hot and cold Minute Maid Calcium+D lots of pulp (watch out for the kid's multivitamin. Don't know if VitE is in it). Silk Soy DHA-Why does it taste better? I think it might be fresher at my grocery store. Coke/Sprite Used to supplement with GeniSoy powdered shake mix in Soy milk Not-Chicken... -
ARCHIVED Butter/margarine
SGWhiskers replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I frequently use sweet oils as a butter substitute. Grapeseed, almond, hazlenut are all good. Don't use grapeseed outside of a recipe. It gums up a pan like nothing else. It is fine if it is mixed into a batter though. All are also good for drizzling on bread. I use olive oil for my savory dishes and usually grapeseed for my sweet. I don't really use "butter... -
ARCHIVED Migraines And Tinnitus With Celiac
SGWhiskers replied to Sher B.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My symptoms are primarily neuro. I was diagnosed through positive blood tests and biopsy. Migraines, tinnitus, nystagmus, nausea, photophobia, tactile sensitivity, confusion, ataxia, fatigue and PAIN. All have subsided with the gluten free diet, but have not been completely eliminated. I'm 6 months gluten-free. When I even smell gluten, several symptoms come... -
ARCHIVED Make Up And Skin Lotion Ect.
SGWhiskers replied to valeriek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
From my experience, gluten free products are a must. When I first got my diagnosis, I went through a stage that was a combination of denial and overwhelmed over the importance of trace gluten. For a month, I continued to use my tried and true expensive facial lotion. I continued to feel bad until I stopped using it. Then I relapsed when I pulled out eyeshadow... -
ARCHIVED Primary Care Visit Yesterday.
SGWhiskers replied to quietmorning01's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad your appt with your PCP went well. It sounds like you have a good one. Celiacs do tend to have more food allergies than the average Joe. Going gluten free does not trigger food allergies/sensitivities, but many of us find that the gluten symptoms were masking the symptoms of other allergies. So when the gluten is removed, we are better able to... -
Thank you for your opinions about this neuro. I agree, it is hard to judge a doc after a first appt, so your insights are especially valuable. I'll be seeing the other neurologist because of a change in my insurance, but have the option to see this one again for a higher copay. So, now I have an idea that he is at least typical and possibly good and now I...
