My husband always made me a cake on my birthday, but he's not a cook. Thank God for Betty Crocker! But, this year, it had to be gluten-free. I tried to find a gluten-free mix but no way am I going to pay 6.00 for a box of cake mix. So, a new tradition must start. gluten-free cakes are to hard for him to make, but I remembered an easy cake that my Grndma...

ARCHIVED Pre-type 2 Diabetes And Celiac
ranger replied to lpjourney's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am a type 11 diabetic. Or maybe an x-type 11! Before going gluten-free, my AIC was 13.5. My doc wanted me to go on insulin- I didn't. For my next AIC, I was 2 months eating gluten, and 1 month on the gluten-free diet. My AIC dropped to 8! I was amazed at this response. I'm overdue for my next AIC, but my fasting readings are in the 70 to 100 range... -

I really don't know what you can eat. Do you cook? Do you have acces to a kitchen? Do you have other food problems? I can tell you what I eat, but I love veges, and I have to limit my fruit intake ( diabetic). For breakfast, I have a vege omelette, or some fried mush and sausage, or a poached egg in marinara. Mid am I have a piece of fruit with some... -

I don't have an official DX, either, but I do refer to myself as celiac. Mostly so people will take it as seriously as it needs to be taken. If I say gluten intolerant or wheat allergy, they think that if I eat a peice of of bread that it will make me sneeze when, in reality, a piece of gluten that you can't even see will make me sick for days. Besides... -

Whoa! Take a deep breath and relax. Just because you'r thin and scared to eat, does not make you anorexic. I'm 5'4", and got down to 84 lbs! Skinny. I've gained 11 lbs. in 3 months on the gluten-free diet. So there's hope. I'm also not glued to the bathroom anymore (still go too much, but it takes time). Why are you afraid to tell your parents? Would... -

ARCHIVED I Am Having A Hard Time With This!
ranger replied to johncgaiser's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My DH can eat gluten - I can't. There is no wheat flour in the house. He takes his lunch to work, so whats allowed in the house is: Sandwich bread, individually wrapped baked goods, crackers, and cereal for him. It's kept together away from the rest of the food. There is one area of the counter where he can make a sandwich ( on a paper plate) or pour... -
Hi. I'm fairly new to all this, too, but cannot tell you how much this sight has helped me. It would be tougher to be a college student with this problem - I cook all the time. If all I had were a dorm room, I'd be lost but I guess that I would figure something out. It helps to have a supportive family. Hang in there. It's worth it!

ARCHIVED Today Is My 1 Year Anniversary :)
ranger replied to kimis's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Congrats!!! I'm only 3 months gluten free, but feel so much better I wouldn't trade it. My family probably wouldn't notice it, either. But - who cares! I'm happy. And getting healthy. Anyway, good job. Can't wait till I get there. -

ARCHIVED Any Type I Diabetics Out There?
ranger replied to audone's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not type I, but am a typeII. This probably wouldn't apply to you, but a strange thing happened to my BS on my way to becoming gluten free. My last AIC before I want gluten-free, was 13.5 I was prescribed Glyburide, and my DOC was talking insulin. After 1 month on the gluten-free diet, my next AIC had gone down to 8 on half the meds. I am due for... -

I'm pretty new at this too, but have shed some of my resentment. I hope your family comes on board for you- it makes it a lot easier. At first, my family was not that supportive, but now , they are and I think part of that was my attitude. This is my health and I will take care of myself, no matter what! I've had to almost relearn to cook, but I do not... -

Forgot to mention. Sister dx with celiac at age 12. Mother dx with chrons, but I think she was probably celiac. If they can't get it now, they probably goofed in the 70's.

I was 62 when self-diagnosed with celiac. Had been sick for nearly 2 years. Constant D., wieght loss, extreme lack of energy, many symptoms. I found this sight and tried gluten-free diet and felt much better. Went to Doc who took blood test (only 1 ) that showed up neg. for celiac. Of course I knew it would, because I had been on the gluten-free diet...

Thanks for your respose and sorry to hear about your dd. I do rinse my mouth religeously, and do not have the oral thrush. It was discovered during an endoscopy, and is systematic. I'm glad that you don't have a problem with it, but many people do. I have been slowly weanig myself off of it, and will carefully research any alternatives. I was surprized...

ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
ranger replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
I do believe that I now belong in this catagory. I don't know if any of you read my post about being glutened by a coffee pot, so I'll fill you in. For about the last 3 years, I have gone with a friend to the local hospital to keep her company while she undergoes chemo. This is once a week and takes most of the day, so I have to eat there. At first, I... -

I baught an ice cream scoop a little smaller than the size of bun I want, and use a French bread recipe. they turn out pretty good, and are really tasty. -
Just looked up advair, a medecated inhalor I use for COPD, and noticed a strong connection to candida. I also see a connection between candida and gluten intolerance. Has anyone used this or a similar drug prior to becoming gluten intolerant? After reading a large number of posts on advair, I am quitting! That's some nasty drug! Thanks

I don't know where to put this, so here goes. There was a box of donuts right next to the pump-type coffee pot that had 3 donuts in it. My friend picked up each one and then put it back in the box. I remember thinking " I'm glad I don't eat donuts because her hands are kind of nasty". Then, she pumped herself a cup of Joe. Then, I pumped myself a cup...

ARCHIVED Trouble With Gluten Free Diet
ranger replied to luna12's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did not get an official diagnosis, but my aversion to being sick all the time was enough. It was rough at first, but I learned to make most of the stuff you love myself. Like pizza and good bread. Most of the stuff you buy is bad, but Tinkyada is good. I usually make my own pasta (cheaper). I actually eat healthier on the gluten-free diet. Good luck... -
Thanks all. It's probably cc. From now on, I'll take my own, along with my bag of food. You'd think that in a hospital, you could get something gluten-free to eat, but I can't. By the way, my elderly Swedish Aunt used to put eggshells in her percolated coffe to clear it up. So it does happen, but I doubt in an institutional setting. Have a good one...

I must say that I drink coffee at home with no problem ( or, none that I know of.) But, once a week, I go to the local hospital to accompany a friend going though chemo and, even though I take my own food, it seems like I get glutened. The only thing I drink there is the coffee. Is it possible for the hospital coffee to contain gluten? I would hate to...

ARCHIVED Is My Job Killing Me?
ranger replied to alephknot's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your job may be making you sick. Did you ever here of baker's lung? It's a lung desease that bakers get from breathing in flour dust. If it's in the air, it's probably getting into your system. I allow no baking in my house (except gluten-free) and for my dh, who is not celiac, I only allow prebaked, wrapped baked goods to come in. Not even a bag of...
