  1. Welcome! I'm just a few weeks in myself, and still making mistakes, but learning. Sushi is also a staple in my household, so I've learned a couple lessons myself: imitation crab has gluten in it, as does miso soup (at least at the sushi places in my town - I know it's possible to find gluten-free miso soup). Tempura (which I never really eat, but my BF does...
  2. Again, I know there might not be anyone from Gainesville, FL on these boards, but some of you might come through here eventually or someone might stumble upon this, so here goes! My boyfriend and I ate at what I consider the best Italian restaurant in Gainesville on Wednesday. It's small, not a chain, the owner is great, the atmosphere is perfect, and most...
  3. I don't know about Dior or Lorac (grad student, can't afford it if the drug store doesn't have it) but I LOVE Neutrogena MoistureShine lip gloss. It's got SPF 20 (I live in FL), it lasts forever (I picked it up instead of regular chapstick accidentally when I left for the gym this morning, and 2 sweaty hours later, it was still there), and it looks pretty...
  4. Ooo, please do send along the recipe for the Pamela's mix! I have some and would love to put it to good use (it made some deeee-licious chocolate chip cookies that my gluten-eating friends gobbled down and then took home with them after a party, so I'm a fan!).
  5. There really isn't a lot of store-bought stuff that meets that description, unfortunately. I've been making my own stuff, and eating a lot of Greek yogurt with berries, that kind of thing, when fruit alone doesn't cut it. I think a lot of companies try to make up for the lack of wheat flour by adding a lot of fat and sugar. I found a bagel with 13 grams of...
  6. The person who first told me I probably had celiac disease was a doctor at my university's student health care center. That's right, a doctor among what is probably the most-maligned group of medical professionals. The people we joke about being able to diagnose only pregnancy and seasonal allergies. She tested me for celiac disease without my asking for...
  7. I have no medical knowledge about this, but I've definitely felt nauseated myself in the last several days, and somewhat crampy. Maybe it is gluten withdrawal, or maybe your daughter and I have the same problem, or maybe it's coincidence, but all of the tests I've had done so far have come back as normal, except the ones that diagnosed me as a celiac. I got...
  8. I'm going to South America this summer, too, actually - to Ecuador. My boyfriend used to live there and will have been there for two months before I arrive, and he's going to do some scouting, so I'll let you know what he finds out here (if you're not going to Ecuador, I'm assuming there will still be more broadly-applicable information). He's assured me...
  9. Aw, MAN! I just bought some of Bob's Red Mill hot cereal. My local mainstream grocery store just started carrying a bunch of BRM stuff (as well as Pamela's, Gluten-Free Pantry, and other brands - it set my heart aflutter, I tell you) and I got some of that, and some of the multi-grain (or whole-grain or whatever it's called) bread mix. I second the request...
  10. I've only been gluten-free four days longer than you (I also had the blood test and endoscopy come back positive) and don't feel miraculously better overnight, either. A lot of people do, according to what they've posted on the internet, but I don't. I, too, have felt my anxiety decrease, and the bloating has gone down a little bit, but I'm waiting for that...
  11. I think Publix in general is trying to step up, yeah. I wrote an e-mail to corporate to tell them how great the new store is, and they said they're trying hard to meet peoples' dietary needs, in recognition of the fact that a lot of people out there have celiac disease, lactose intolerance, nut allergies, diabetes, etc. The corporation (which doesn't employ...
  12. Okay, this might not be useful to anyone, because no one has ever responded to my post about other celiacs in Gainesville on the Support Groups board. However, I cannot possibly be the only celiac in Gainesville, because a brand new Publix has opened here in town (by the Target on Archer, for any locals who might be here) and it is AMAZING. They have a big...
  13. Right - one healthy eye roll from waitstaff is all I needed to get annoyed with the people who have made gluten-free a fad. I would not eat like this if eating gluten had no effect on me. I really love the heck out of gluten-full foods (pardon me, I'm not even three weeks in yet and still get really sad when my boyfriend orders tiramisu), so I don't get why...
  14. Oh, yikes. What is she eating? Have you cut out dairy? Can you take her to a different doctor? The vomiting seems worrisome. Is she on any medications? Could she have some kind of parasite? Has she been tested for Crohns disease? I have a friend I've known since I was born who had symptoms like those and was diagnosed with Crohns when he was about 13, and...
  15. I know there's a genetic test that will tell you if you carry the gene for celiac disease. There are a couple of downsides to this, though, that my doctor mom pointed out to me a couple days ago when I said something about my sister (who is not showing any celiac symptoms and had a negative blood test) looking into the genetic test. First of all, of course...
  16. Hey! It won't let me email or message you. But I was curious as to how you're doing gluten-free, athletic--all that stuff. Will it let you message me?

  17. Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate your feedback. I'm already a pretty healthy eater, and I think I'm overthinking things a little. I'll give it two more weeks, and in that space of time hopefully I will be able to meet with a dietician who can do all the good evaluating stuff they do.
  18. I was also about to ask the same question here! It's been two weeks. I've been getting terrible migraines and feeling pretty bad a lot of the time. I'm constantly thirsty. I want to get better so desperately, but I'm still not feeling good. Leiana - I think Ensure is gluten-free (another friend who may or may not be celiac told me she drinks it). Might...
  19. Might you be lactose intolerant? Also, did you stop eating gluten before your blood test? That could result in a false negative.
  20. I think you could get a genetic test done, which would tell you whether you carry the gene but not whether you're having an active immune response, without having to go back on gluten. The other tests require you to have been eating gluten for at least six weeks, is my understanding according to what my doctor told me. I have a friend who never got tested...
  21. It's good that you got the blood test, but can you also see a neurologist? Whether you have celiac disease or not, you might have something going on neurologically that you should have checked out as well. Celiac disease can certainly explain a lot of different symptoms, but it isn't the answer for everyone, and I'd urge you to go to the neurologist in case...
  22. Oh good! I'm glad I'm on the right track with Almond Breeze. Have any of you tried baking with it, or heating it (I like to make chai)?
  23. I have reactions to barbecue sauce, too, even if it's gluten-free (we use Sweet Baby Ray's). I haven't been gluten-free long enough to say for 100% certain that that's what's going on, but that's my guess. Maybe some of us just don't tolerate it.
  24. Hi, everyone! So, I'm over two weeks into the gluten-free diet and not feeling all better, which I know is not cause for concern. I've read a couple of places that celiacs tend to be lactose intolerant, so I'll cut out dairy, but I've also seen that people start out eating one thing (rice, maybe) and then add another thing, and then another thing, until they...
  25. Hi! Did you get the blood work done? That can give you some guidance here (but you have to be eating gluten when you get the it done so you don't get a false negative).
